  • Giants' Ross Stripling: Takes loss as bulk reliever

Stripling (0-5) allowed two runs on five hits and struck out three without walking a batter over five innings Friday, taking the loss versus the Rangers.

The Giants put just four men on base and were lucky to scrape together one run. Stripling was also solid, but he gave up solo home runs to Nathaniel Lowe and Mitch Garver on back-to-back pitches in the sixth inning. While the right-hander has given up just 10 runs over his last 26.2 innings, he's taken three losses in five outings over that span. He has a 5.10 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 58:11 K:BB in 72.1 innings over 18 appearances (11 starts) this season. Stripling is tentatively lined up for a home outing versus the Rays next week.

  • Astros' Justin Verlander: Cruises to seventh win

Verlander (7-6) earned the win Friday, allowing three runs on six hits over six innings in a 11-3 win over the Angels. He struck out seven without walking a batter.

Verlander tossed a quality start and received plenty of run support to earn his first win since his return to the Astros at the trade deadline. Since the start of June, Verlander has posted an ace-like 2.56 ERA, albeit with only 70 strikeouts over 77.1 innings. He'll look to continue this string of quality performances in his next start, likely to take place next week in Miami.

  • Kyle Gibson SP | BAL

Orioles' Kyle Gibson: Crushed in Friday's loss

Gibson (11-7) allowed nine runs on 12 hits and two walks while striking out four over 5.1 innings to take the loss Friday versus the Mariners.

Gibson labored through the outing, throwing 57 of 89 pitches for strikes while yielding multiple homers for just the second time this season. The Mariners are now responsible for both his shortest outing and most runs given up in a start this season. The right-hander's ERA ballooned to 4.89 with a 1.33 WHIP and 121:45 K:BB through 145.1 innings over 25 starts this season. He's projected for a favorable road matchup in Oakland next week as the Orioles move to a six-man rotation.

  • Luis Castillo SP | CHW

Mariners' Luis Castillo: Bounces back versus Baltimore

Castillo (8-7) allowed one run on two hits and two walks while striking out eight over six innings to earn the win Friday over the Orioles.

Castillo was tagged for seven runs over six innings versus the Angels a week ago, but he bounced back against the American League's top team. He's racked up four quality starts over six outings since the All-Star break, though he has just two wins to show for it in that span. The ace right-hander has a 3.14 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 163:36 K:BB through 143.1 innings over 24 starts this season. Castillo is projected for a favorable road start in Kansas City next week.

  • Tylor Megill SP | NYM

Mets' Tylor Megill: Coughs up six runs

Megill (6-6) yielded six runs (five earned) on nine hits and a walk over 5.1 innings Friday, striking out three and taking a loss against Atlanta.

Megill looked solid through three shutout innings before Atlanta broke open a scoreless tie in the fourth. He's been tagged with 22 earned runs over his last 22 frames, driving his season ERA up to 5.64. The 28-year-old has allowed at least four runs in seven of his 17 MLB appearances in 2023. Megill is lined up to face the Pirates at home next week.

  • Reid Detmers SP | LAA

Angels' Reid Detmers: Another ugly outing

Detmers (2-9) took the loss Friday, allowing seven runs on seven hits and three walks over 2.1 innings against Houston. He didn't strike out a batter.

Jon Singleton had not hit a big-league home run since 2015, but he knocked out two against Detmers, who was pulled following Singleton's third-inning blast. A rough July has turned into a disastrous August for Detmers, as he has allowed 14 earned runs in his last 6.1 innings. Friday's outing was also his first career appearance without a strikeout. Unless the Angels decide to go in a different direction, Detmers will next attempt to right the ship in a mid-week matchup against the Rangers in Arlington.

  • Charlie Morton SP | ATL

Braves' Charlie Morton: Victorious in strange outing

Morton (11-10) allowed three hits and seven walks over five scoreless innings Friday, striking out four and earning a win over the Mets.

Morton threw just 52 of 105 pitches for strikes and struggled with his command all night, but New York couldn't take advantage. He'd coughed up 16 runs over his previous four starts but dropped his ERA back down to 3.71 after Friday's win. Since the start of July, the veteran right-hander's recorded a 3.50 ERA with a 36:26 K:BB through 43.2 innings. Morton's expected to face the Yankees at home next week.

  • Johan Oviedo SP | BOS

Pirates' Johan Oviedo: Scuffles against Reds

Oviedo (6-12) absorbed the loss Friday versus the Reds, allowing six runs on five hits and two walks in five innings. He struck out four.

Things looked ominous right away for the big right-hander, as the first four batters of the game reached base and three of them scored. Oviedo looked like he might settle in after that, retiring 10 of the next 11, but then light-hitting catcher Luke Maile clubbed a three-run shot in the fourth inning. He needed 93 pitches to cover his five frames. Oviedo came into this one with a 2.32 ERA since the All-Star break, but this was certainly a step back.

  • Andrew Abbott SP | CIN

Reds' Andrew Abbott: Bounces back versus Pirates

Abbott (7-3) earned the win over the Pirates on Thursday, allowing two runs on four hits over 5.2 innings. He struck out nine.

Coming off back-to-back clunkers against the Cubs and Nationals which saw him yield a combined 10 runs over nine innings, Abbott produced a much sharper effort Friday. He cruised through five shutout frames, but the lefty was chased one out short of a quality start after giving up a sixth-inning home run to Ke'Bryan Hayes and then a double and RBI single. Abbott collected 10 swinging strikes on 98 pitches in the outing.

  • Tarik Skubal SP | LAD

Tigers' Tarik Skubal: Tagged with five runs

Skubal (2-2) allowed five runs (four earned) on seven hits and two walks over 5.1 innings Friday, striking out three and taking a loss against the Red Sox.

Skubal gave up one run through three innings before serving up a three-run shot to Triston Casas in the fourth. It was the first homer allowed by Skubal this season. He's allowed 15 earned runs through seven starts, and he's turned in four scoreless appearances already. Skubal will carry a 4.18 ERA into his next outing, which is projected to be in Cleveland next week.
