Velasquez (3-8) allowed three runs (two earned) on two hits and a walk while striking out two over an inning's work as he took the loss against the Giants and Wednesday.

Velasquez loaded the bases after three of the first four batters he faced reached and then surrendered a bases-clearing double to Kris Bryant to give the Giants an early 3-0 advantage. He would retire the next two batters to conclude the frame, ending his day at 37 pitches. The Padres will likely have to continue using Velasquez in an opener role with so many of their rotation arms injured. The 29-year-old owns a 6.23 ERA, 1.48 WHIP and 91:46 K:BB over 86.2 innings.

Kelly (7-11) allowed six runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out seven over six innings as he took the loss against Atlanta on Wednesday.

Atlanta got to Kelly right away in the first inning with three runs on three hits and a walk. Three more runs would be scored against him along the way after Austin Riley launched a solo home run in the third and Ozzie Albies added a two-run shot in the fifth. Kelly hung around to throw 90 pitches over six frames despite being knocked around pretty well. The right-hander has struggled mightily lately, allowing 15 runs over his last three starts. For the year, Kelly has a 4.59 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 126:37 K:BB over 153 innings. He lines up for a meeting with the Giants in San Francisco next week.

Anderson (8-5) allowed one run on two hits and a walk while striking out eight over seven innings in a win over the Diamondbacks on Wednesday night.

The Diamondbacks got to Anderson in the first inning with a two-out double to get them on the scoreboard but had trouble getting anything going afterward. Anderson allowed just one more baserunner while pitching six scoreless innings. Wednesday was his first time going more than six innings since July 1 and his first time allowing under two walks since June 26. He also generated 15 whiffs and has 24 strikeouts over his last 17.2 innings pitched. For the year, Anderson owns a 3.60 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 122:50 K:BB over 122.1 innings. He's lined up for a big divisional showdown against the Phillies next week.

Marquez allowed five earned runs on six hits and four walks while striking out four across four innings Wednesday against the Dodgers. He did not factor into the decision.

Marquez fell apart late in his start, as all five of his earned runs came in the fourth and fifth innings. He was uncharacteristically wild in the outing, as his four walks marked the first time he has surrendered more than two free passes in a start since July 31. Marquez now has a 4.31 ERA on the season, which has been inflated by him allowing five or more earned runs in four of his last eight outings.

Buehler allowed five earned runs on seven hits and no walks while striking out two across 3.2 innings Wednesday against the Rockies. He did not factor into the decision.

Buehler allowed five consecutive hits to begin the fourth inning and was eventually pulled from the game having allowed all five earned runs in the frame. While Buehler has largely remained effective, this performance comes just three turns through the rotation after he allowed six earned runs across three innings to San Francisco. Notably, Buehler also has only 13 strikeouts across 19.2 frames in four September starts. Even so, he has maintained a stellar 2.58 ERA with a 196:49 K:BB across 195.2 innings on the season.

Hendricks (14-7) allowed four runs (three earned) on five hits and no walks while striking out three across 5.2 innings to take the loss Wednesday against the Twins.

Hendricks surrendered a pair of home runs -- both to Max Kepler -- that accounted for all of his earned runs. He was fairly sharp otherwise, as he did not surrender a walk for the first time in his last four starts. Even so, Hendricks is ending the season in poor form, as he has now managed only one quality start in his last six appearances. Overall, he has maintained a 4.81 ERA with a 126:43 K:BB across 176 innings.

Walker (7-11) allowed six runs on six hits and two walks with one strikeout over two innings, taking the loss in Wednesday's 12-5 defeat to the Red Sox.

This was another disastrous outing for Walker, as the right-hander labored through two innings of painful baseball. Kyle Schwarber threw a jab in the first inning with a solo homer, then landed the knockout punch in the second with a three-run round-tripper. Walker has now allowed nine home runs in his last five starts and has pitched to an 8.10 ERA over that same span. With a contract that could feasibly see the 29-year-old remain in Queens for two more seasons, the Mets better hope that the one-time All-Star figures things out.

Wheeler pitched six innings, giving up one run on four hits and two walks while striking out nine in the win over the Orioles on Monday. He did not factor into the decision.

The 31-year-old avoided surrendering any runs until Austin Hays doubled in Ryan Mountcastle in the sixth inning, providing the only damage against him in this one. It was his fourth consecutive start in which he surrendered one or fewer runs, posting a 1.14 ERA over those outings. After a rough month of August where his ERA went from 2.45 to 3.01, the hot streak has Wheeler's ERA back down to 2.79. He'll draw Atlanta in his next start Tuesday.

Mikolas (2-2) allowed two runs on four hits and no walks with three strikeouts through seven innings, picking up the win in Wednesday's 10-2 victory over the Brewers.

Mikolas was staked to a 6-0 lead by the time the second inning rolled around and cruised to his second victory of the season Wednesday. The right-hander entered play having gone no deeper than 5.2 innings in a start this year, so to see him go seven is a boon for a Cardinals team that is as hot as any in baseball. The 33-year-old also set a new season high in pitches thrown with 91. He'll look to replicate this performance in his next outing, which figures to come against these same Brewers on Tuesday.

Gray (1-2) allowed two runs on six hits and a walk over six innings against Miami on Wednesday to earn his first career victory. He also registered eight strikeouts.

Gray bounced back in a big way after having been pounded for 22 runs (and 14 walks) over his four previous starts, limiting the Marlins to RBI singles by Lewin Diaz and Jesus Sanchez. Gray stranded a pair of runners in the sixth inning to complete his fourth quality start since being acquired from the Dodgers at the trade deadline. Despite his inconsistencies, the 23-year-old has likely flashed enough -- including a 9.86 K/9 over 59.1 innings -- to solidify a rotation spot entering 2022. Gray is lined up to face the Rockies at Coors Field next Monday.
