Nationals' Cade Cavalli: Hammered by Yanks

Cavalli (1-1) took the loss Wednesday as the Nationals were routed 11-2 by the Yankees, surrendering eight runs (seven earned) on eight hits -- including four home runs -- and a walk over 2.1 innings. He struck out four.

The home squad sent 15 men to the plate in a nine-run third inning that saw Cavalli serve up long balls to Aaron Judge, Cody Bellinger and Ryan McMahon before he got the hook. Cavalli had been pitching well since joining the big-league rotation for Washington in early August, but Wednesday's disastrous outing sent his ERA soaring from 2.82 to 5.11. The right-hander will look to rebound in his next start, which lines up to come at home early next week against the Marlins.

  • Quinn Priester SP | MIL

Brewers' Quinn Priester: Pushed to Saturday with wrist issue

Brewers manager Pat Murphy said that Priester's next start will be pushed back to Saturday versus the Blue Jays due to a "wrist thing," Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports.

Priester had been scheduled to start Wednesday's game against the Diamondbacks, but the Brewers have opted to give him some extra rest due to a minor injury. Aaron Ashby is serving as the Brewers' opening pitcher, and the newly signed Erick Fedde will pitch in bulk relief for the Brewers on Wednesday.

  • Erick Fedde SP | CHW

Brewers' Erick Fedde: Filling bulk role in team debut

Fedde is expected to be used in bulk relief behind opening pitcher Aaron Ashby in his Brewers debut Wednesday against the Diamondbacks, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports.

Wednesday had been Quinn Priester's turn in the rotation, but the Brewers are opting to push him back at least one more day in the pitching schedule in order to clear the way for Fedde to get some extended innings after finalizing a one-year deal earlier in the day. Between stops with St. Louis and Atlanta earlier this season, Fedde has been one of the baseball's most ineffective starters, logging a 5.76 ERA, 1.57 WHIP and 76:60 K:BB in 125 innings. The Brewers haven't outlined what Fedde's role might look like beyond Wednesday, but if he ends up pitching well, he could enter the conversation for additional starts or bulk-relief appearances.

  • Quinn Priester SP | MIL

Brewers' Quinn Priester: No longer pitching Wednesday

Priester is no longer scheduled to start Wednesday's game against the Diamondbacks, and the Brewers have yet to announce when he'll be in line to pitch next, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports.

Priester owns a 3.18 ERA over his seven starts since the All-Star break and isn't believed to be dealing with an injury, but he was uncharacteristically wild in his most recent outing against the Cubs last Thursday, when he lasted just 4.1 innings while issuing a season-high five walks. As a result, the Brewers may have simply opted to build in some extra rest for the right-hander, who could be available to start as soon as Thursday's series finale with Arizona. Milwaukee will turn to Aaron Ashby to serve as their opening pitcher Wednesday, and the newly signed Erick Fedde is slated to work behind him in bulk relief.

  • Erick Fedde SP | CHW

Brewers' Erick Fedde: Signs on with Milwaukee

Fedde signed a one-year contract with the Brewers on Wednesday.

Fedde will move on to his third team in a month after Atlanta recently cut ties with him following a rough five-appearance run in which he yielded an 8.10 ERA, 1.84 WHIP and 13:13 K:BB in 23.1 innings. Milwaukee will bring the veteran right-hander aboard with the hope that its staff can help him more closely resemble the pitcher that turned in a 3.30 ERA over 31 starts between the White Sox and Cardinals in 2024, but Fedde is unlikely to be trusted with a meaningful role right away. With Milwaukee's top five starters all healthy, Fedde will presumably be ticketed for a mop-up or low-leverage relief role out of the bullpen.

  • Brewers' Logan Henderson: Season comes to close

The Brewers transferred Henderson (elbow) from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day IL on Wednesday.

After being shelved Aug. 8 due to a right flexor tendon strain, Henderson had been cleared to initiate plyometric work earlier this week with the hope of beginning a throwing program in the near future and returning at the tail end of the regular season. However, his move to the 60-day IL suggests that Henderson didn't respond as well to the initial workouts as well as the Brewers had hoped, and he'll now be shut down for the remainder of the season. Before sustaining the injury, Henderson was magnificent over his five starts with Milwaukee, going 3-0 with a 1.78 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 33:8 K:BB in 25.1 innings. Assuming his flexor strain is of a low or moderate grade and doesn't require a procedure, Henderson should be back to full health for spring training and will get the chance to compete for a full-time rotation spot with Milwaukee in 2026.

  • Nick Lodolo SP | CIN

Reds' Nick Lodolo: Activated, starting Wednesday

The Reds reinstated Lodolo (finger) from the 15-day injured list ahead of his scheduled start Wednesday against the Dodgers in Los Angeles.

Cincinnati placed reliever Graham Ashcraft (forearm) on the 15-day IL to clear room on the active roster for Lodolo, who had been on the shelf since Aug. 5 due to a left index finger blister. Lodolo didn't go out on a rehab assignment prior to being activated, but he was able to get built back up to some degree with a three-inning simulated game this past weekend. The southpaw could be in line for a lighter workload than normal as he rejoins the Reds to make his 24th start of the season.

  • Jonah Tong P | NYM

Mets' Jonah Tong: Could be limited to one start

Tong, who will be called up from Triple-A Syracuse to start Friday's game against the Marlins, won't be guaranteed any additional turns through the big-league rotation, Will Sammon and Tim Britton of the Athletic report. "We're going turn by turn at this point," president of baseball operations David Stearns said Tuesday. "We try not to plan too far ahead."

The minor-league strikeout leader will make his MLB debut Friday as the Mets build in an extra day of rest for other members of the rotation amid a busy portion of the schedule. Whether Tong forces New York to stick with a six-man rotation moving forward or bumps one of the veterans starters to the bullpen will likely depend on how he fares Friday, and whether he gives the club the best chance to win games in a tight playoff race.

  • Braves' Spencer Strider: Denied two-start week

Strider is set to receive an additional day of rest before his next start and isn't expected to return to the hill until Monday's game against the Cubs in Chicago, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports.

After delivering seven innings of one-run ball in Atlanta's 2-1 loss to the Marlins on Monday, Strider had been lined to get his second start of the week this Sunday in Philadelphia. However, Atlanta is opting to have him swap spots in the pitching schedule with rookie Hurston Waldrep, who will take the hill Sunday on four days' rest after starting in Tuesday's 11-2 win over Miami. Strider may not be in line for any two-start weeks for the remainder of the season, as Atlanta plans to bring Chris Sale (ribcage) back from the injured list this weekend and move forward with a six-man rotation, even though the club will have every Thursday off in September.

  • Cal Quantrill SP | TEX

Braves' Cal Quantrill: Cleared for next start

Quantrill (calf) is slated to start Thursday's series opener against the Phillies in Philadelphia, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports.

After being claimed off waivers from the Marlins last week, Quantrill made his Atlanta debut during Saturday's 9-2 loss to the Mets. Quantrill, who took his 11th loss of the season, struck out three and was charged with three earned runs on five hits and five walks across 4.2 innings before departing due to calf cramps. Atlanta described Quantrill's removal from the contest as precautionary, and after receiving treatment to address the issue, the right-hander will be ready to take the hill Thursday on normal rest.
