Montero escaped with a no-decision in the first game of Friday's doubleheader against the Guardians, coughing up six runs on eight hits and a walk over four innings. He struck out four.

The right-hander was staked to a 6-1 lead after three innings, but a grand slam by Brayan Rocchio in the fourth brought Cleveland level and helped send Montero to the showers after 82 pitches (51 strikes). The six earned runs allowed were a season worst for Montero, while four innings represented his shortest outing since July 17, when he worked in relief. Over six trips to the mound since the beginning of August, he's produced a 4.13 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 17:9 K:BB in 32.2 innings. Montero will look to bounce back in his next start, which lines up to come at home next week against the Twins.

The Athletics recalled Estes from Triple-A Las Vegas on Friday, Jason Burke of Roundtable.io reports.

Estes has mostly struggled in the harsh pitching conditions of the Pacific Coast League this season, posting a 6.88 ERA and 1.64 WHIP over 86.1 innings with Las Vegas. He has worked exclusively as a starter this year, and while he figures to be available out of the bullpen immediately upon his return to the majors, Estes could make a start next week in place of Jack Perkins, who was sent down Friday in a corresponding move.

Toronto activated Taillon (forearm) from the 15-day IL and he will start Friday's game against the Royals.

Taillon, who has been shelved since Aug. 11, will make his return to the big-league mound Friday. In two starts for Toronto since being traded by the Cubs, the right-hander owns a 3.38 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 7:5 K:BB over eight innings. The Blue Jays optioned Ricky Tiedemann to Triple-A Buffalo to clear a roster spot for Taillon.

Tampa Bay placed McClanahan on the 15-day injured list Friday with left forearm tightness.

McClanahan will make his second trip to the IL in the last three months after allowing four earned runs over five innings Thursday against the Rangers. In his first big-league action since 2023, McClanahan owns a 10-7 record this season with a 3.36 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 106:39 K:BB over 118 innings. With the 29-year-old on the shelf, the Rays recalled Alex Cook from Triple-A Durham to bolster the bullpen.

Lagrange (shoulder) is traveling back to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and is slated to throw a live batting practice session, Francys Romero of BeisbolFR.com reports.

It will be Lagrange's first time facing hitters since he was diagnosed with a right shoulder capsular sprain in early July. If live BP goes well, Lagrange will be activated from the 7-day injured list. The 23-year-old is a long shot to be called up to the majors this season, but if he's able to enter the offseason seemingly healthy it would be a positive development for him and the Yankees.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said earlier this week that Fried would be piggybacked by Will Warren during Friday's game in San Diego, Greg Joyce of the New York Post reports.

Assuming Boone's plan hasn't changed since he first mentioned the piggyback plan Tuesday, Fried will operate with a restricted workload Friday that could make it difficult for him to hit the five innings required to qualify for a win. After missing time with a left elbow bone bruise, Fried returned from the 15-day injured list last Saturday and started the second game of a doubleheader versus the Red Sox, giving up one run while striking out four batters over 3.2 innings and 63 pitches.

Ryan (hamstring/paternity) is expected to be cleared to pitch in games again soon, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.

Ryan has not pitched since June because of a hamstring strain, and he's also been away on paternity leave recently. The 27-year-old was acquired from the Dodgers at the trade deadline in the Tarik Skubal deal, and he will be making his organizational debut when he gets into a game. The Tigers remain optimistic that Ryan can pitch for them before the end of this season, but it's not a given after such a long layoff.

Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said Friday that Flaherty (forearm) could begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Toledo this weekend, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.

Flaherty has progressed well of late as he ramps up his throwing progression, and he could test things out in a game setting soon. The veteran right-hander has been sidelined since late July with right forearm flexor inflammation. Flaherty could need a couple rehab appearances before rejoining the Tigers' rotation later this month.

The Guardians recalled Peterson from Triple-A Columbus on Friday, Tim Stebbins of MLB.com reports.

Peterson was added to the Guardians' 40-man roster last offseason, but this will be his first stint in the big leagues. The 26-year-old has logged a 4.53 ERA and 102:34 K:BB across 95.1 frames this season with Columbus. Peterson will likely be needed to cover some innings during Friday's doubleheader versus the Tigers.

The Guardians activated Cecconi (arm) from the 15-day injured list Friday, Tim Stebbins of MLB.com reports.

Cecconi has been sidelined for nearly a month with right arm fatigue, but he's been cleared to return after allowing two runs over 3.2 innings in two rehab outings. The right-hander will be used in a relief role down the stretch, and there's a good chance he'll be needed to pitch during Friday's doubleheader against the Tigers.
