Hill didn't factor into the decision in Friday's 5-4 loss to the Yankees, giving up four runs on five hits and two walks over five innings. He struck out four.

The 42-year-old lefty lasted five innings for only the second time in five September outings, and he's coughed up at least four runs in four of those. Hill's 6.75 ERA and 1.72 WHIP on the month suggest he has very little left in the tank right now, and if he does return for a 19th MLB campaign in 2023, it seems highly unlikely he'll be asked to fill a traditional starting role.

Eovaldi (shoulder) allowed three runs on three hits and two walks while striking four in a rehab start for Triple-A Worcester on Friday, the Red Sox's official site reports.

Eovaldi threw 57 pitches (35 strikes) Friday after a 65-pitch simulated game to start the week. That puts him in line for a potential start in the majors before the season's end. The Red Sox will decide this weekend whether Eovaldi's next start will be for Boston. The right-hander last pitched for the Red Sox on Aug. 12.

Varland (0-2) gave up three earned runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out three batters over 5.2 innings to take the loss in a 4-2 defeat against the Angels on Friday.

Varland came within one out of recording his first career quality start but was forced to settle for the loss after giving up a pair of solo home runs to Taylor Ward. Varland has now made three major-league starts and has an ERA of 5.05 in the small sample size. The 24-year-old right-hander had an ERA of 3.34 with a K/9 of 10.2 in 105 innings at Double-A this year, so it is worth watching to see how his skills translate to the big leagues. He is tentatively expected to make his next start against the White Sox.

Gonzales (10-15) gave up three earned runs on eight hits and no walks while striking out two over five innings to take the loss in a 5-1 defeat against the Royals on Friday.

Gonzales chalked up an unremarkable performance, which led to his 15th loss of the season and raised his ERA to 4.05. He has now given up eight earned runs over his last two appearances after stringing together four quality starts in a row. The main problem with Gonzales is that his stuff simply isn't good enough to miss many bats. The 30-year-old left-hander has 94 strikeouts in 171 innings pitched this season. He is tentatively expected to take his next turn in the rotation in an appearance against the Rangers.

Singer (10-4) gave up one earned run on five hits and two walks while striking out eight over seven innings to earn the win in a 5-1 victory over Mariners on Friday.

Singer handled the Mariners with ease, with the only damage coming on a solo home run off the bat of Cal Raleigh in the second inning. Singer has put together a breakout campaign in his second full season starting in the majors. The 26-year-old right-hander now has a 2.99 ERA in 147.2 innings pitched. His xFIP of 3.31 coming into the game suggests that his success could be sustainable going forward. Singer will look for his 11th win of the year his next time out, which is expected to be at Cleveland.

Cole was ejected from Friday's start against the Red Sox in the sixth inning, Lindsey Adler of The Athletic reports.

After striking out J.D. Martinez to end the top of the sixth inning, Cole argued with the home plate umpire over a perceived missed call that led directly to a three-run home run by Alex Verdugo. While he was formally tossed, Cole's start was likely already over as he had thrown 103 pitches while also allowing four earned runs on five hits and two walks. He also struck out eight, backed by 17 swinging strikes on 103 total pitches. For the season, Cole owns a 3.49 ERA across 188.1 frames, though he has now served up multiple home runs in three consecutive starts.

Irvin (9-12) took the loss during Friday's 9-2 defeat at the hands of the Mets, allowing eight runs on 11 hits and two walks with three strikeouts in 4.2 innings.

Irvin surrendered three runs on five singles in the second frame and five two-out runs on six baserunners in the fifth. The 28-year-old has permitted at least eight runs in two of four September starts, and his 8.87 ERA across 23.1 innings in four starts this month has bumped his season mark from 3.35 to 4.11. He'll look to get back on track in his next start, currently projected to come midweek against the Angels.

Giolito allowed three runs on six hits in six innings Friday against the Tigers, striking out nine while walking just one. He did not factor into the decision.

From a K:BB perspective, Giolito's night was a strong one, but the outing only served to bring his season-long ERA down to 5.05. The Tigers did all their damage off him early, with a Miguel Cabrera groundout and an Eric Haase single driving in runs in the first inning before Jonathan Schoop launched a solo homer in the second. Giolito settled down after that and exited with the score tied 3-3, but Chicago's bullpen faltered after he left. He's in line to face the Twins both home and away to close out the season.

Rodriguez (4-5) picked up the win Friday against the White Sox, giving up three runs on eight hits across six innings. He struck out three batters and walked one.

While the outing was good for both a win and a quality start, it can hardly be considered a dominating outing. The lefty allowed one run on a Jose Abreu single in the third inning and two more on an AJ Pollock homer in the sixth. Rodriguez is in line to face the Royals at home and the Mariners on the road to close out the year.

Gray allowed a single unearned run in five innings Friday against the Guardians, striking out just one batter but allowing just one hit, one walk and one hit-by-pitch. He did not factor into the decision.

Gray did a good job keeping the bases clean Friday, with the Guardians' only run under his watch coming on a throwing error during a stolen base attempt. The Guardians would score five runs off Taylor Hearn immediately after Gray left the game, however, denying the veteran righty the chance to secure a win. Gray tentatively lines up to face the Mariners in Seattle and the Yankees at home to close the year.
