  • George Kirby SP | SEA

Mariners' George Kirby: Won't have innings limit in '23

The Mariners don't plan to officially limit Kirby's innings in 2023 but will likely build him up slowly at the start of the season, Shannon Drayer of 710 ESPN Seattle reports.

The 25-year-old logged 130 innings in his rookie 2022 season, the most he'd worked by far in a professional career dating back to 2019. Drayer notes manager Scott Servais won't look to officially limit Kirby's innings in his second season, but the fact the right-hander will slot into the No. 5 spot in the rotation will organically afford him some time off over the course of the campaign. "Starting in the 5-hole (fifth spot in the rotation), he is going to get some extra rest between starts, which will be good for him as we ramp up throughout the season," Servais said.

  • Reid Detmers SP | LAA

Angels' Reid Detmers: Velocity still up

Detmers' average velocity on his slider in Tuesday's exhibition contest against the Dodgers was 90.3 mph, per Jared Tims of Talkin' Halos.

Detmers' average slider was thrown at 85.8 mph last season, so the increased velocity this spring is notable. The southpaw also has shown marked gains on his fastball during the exhibition slate, throwing it about five mph faster than he did last season. Detmers had an up-and-down campaign as a rookie in 2022, but he finished with a respectable 3.77 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 22.6 percent strikeout rate. If his velocity jump this spring proves to be sustainable, Detmers could take another leap forward this season.

  • Nestor Cortes SP | PHI

Yankees' Nestor Cortes: Hurls four innings in spring finale

Cortes threw four innings in an exhibition game against Washington on Tuesday, allowing one run on three hits and one walk. He didn't strike out any batters.

The only run Cortes gave up in the outing came on a second-inning Alex Call solo homer. Cortes finished the spring slate with a 4.76 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 11:4 K:BB over 11.1 innings. The southpaw battled a hamstring issue early in camp, but he recovered in time to make three starts. Cortes is expected to make his regular-season debut at home against Philadelphia on April 3.

  • Angels' Griffin Canning: Goes to 15-day IL

The Angels placed Canning (groin) on the 15-day injured list Wednesday.

Canning suffered the injury just before the end of spring training and will be sidelined for at least a couple of weeks. Tucker Davidson seems likely to serve as the Angels' sixth starter out of the gate, though Los Angeles doesn't project to need that role filled until mid-April.

  • Rangers' Jake Odorizzi: Heads to 60-day IL

The Rangers placed Odorizzi (arm) on the 60-day injured list Wednesday, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports.

Initial reports suggested that Odorizzi had been dealing with normal fatigue or soreness in his right arm, but his move to the 60-day IL suggests the issue is more serious than it previously appeared. The 33-year-old was acquired from Atlanta over the winter, but it remains unclear when he might be able to debut for Texas. Grant reports that Odorizzi isn't expected to require surgery to address the arm injury.

  • Matthew Boyd SP | CHC

Tigers' Matthew Boyd: Lined up as No. 4 starter

Boyd will start the Tigers' fourth regular-season game next Monday at Houston, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports.

Boyd was scratched from his final scheduled Grapefruit League outing this past Sunday against the Blue Jays, but it thankfully was not an injury-related decision. He'll follow Eduardo Rodriguez, Spencer Turnbull and Joey Wentz in Detroit's season-opening starting rotation. Matt Manning has the No. 5 spot.

  • Shane Baz SP | BAL

Rays' Shane Baz: Officially placed on IL

The Rays placed Baz (elbow) on the 15-day injured list Wednesday.

Baz underwent Tommy John surgery last September and won't be an option for the Rays until 2024. He'll be moved to the 60-day IL when the Rays need to free up a spot on the 40-man roster down the road.

  • Tyler Glasnow SP | LAD

Rays' Tyler Glasnow: Placed on 15-day IL

The Rays placed Glasnow (oblique) on the 15-day injured list Wednesday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Glasnow was diagnosed in late February with a Grade 2 strain of his left oblique and is expected to miss at least the first month of the 2023 regular season. He had just resumed throwing on flat ground when spring camp came to a close.

  • Tigers' Michael Lorenzen: Resumes mound work

Lorenzen (groin) threw a bullpen session earlier this week and will throw another one Thursday, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports.

Lorenzen is expected to be on the injured list to begin the season with a left groin strain, but he seems to be making nice progress. The right-hander will probably need a rehab start before returning but might only wind up missing the minimum 15 days.

  • James Paxton SP | BOS

Red Sox's James Paxton: Ready for rehab assignment

Paxton (hamstring) is scheduled to begin a minor-league rehab assignment Monday with Triple-A Worcester or the rookie-level Florida Complex League club, Rob Bradford of WEEI.com reports.

The Red Sox would ideally have Paxton face higher-level competition at Triple-A as he builds back up from the right hamstring strain that will keep him on the injured list to begin the season, but colder weather in the Northeast could prompt the team to have him make his first rehab outing in Florida. Paxton threw two simulated innings Wednesday and was showcasing a fastball that sat around 94-to-96 miles per hour, so his arm appears to be in good condition after he didn't pitch in the majors in 2022 while recovering from Tommy John surgery and then a lat strain suffered last August in a rehab start. The veteran southpaw will likely need to build up to around five innings over the course of 2-to-3 starts in the minors before he's considered an option for the big-league rotation.
