Flaherty (8-8) allowed seven runs on four hits and four walks while striking out three over three innings to take the loss Tuesday versus the Padres.

Most of the damage came in a five-run first inning, which was punctuated by a Gary Sanchez grand slam. Flaherty has shown little consistency over his three starts with the Orioles, allowing 11 runs over 14 innings while posting a 1-2 record for his new team. Overall, the right-hander is at a 4.73 ERA, 1.55 WHIP and 125:62 K:BB through 123.2 innings between Baltimore and St. Louis. With two off days within the next week, Flaherty is expected to have a full week between starts before next taking the mound at home against the Blue Jays.

Hancock did not factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing five runs on nine hits over five innings against the Royals. He struck out one.

After holding the Padres to one run over five innings in his MLB debut, Hancock surrendered nine hits and five runs Tuesday. All of the runs came in the fifth, where Bobby Witt tagged him for a grand slam as part of a five-hit frame. After earning a 10.0 K/9 at Double-A Arkansas this season, Hancock has struggled to accumulate strikeouts at the MLB level, having fanned four batters across 10 innings thus far. The rookie shouldn't earn much streaming consideration for his next start, which is tentatively scheduled to come against the Astros on Sunday.

Lyles did not factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing seven runs (six earned) on nine hits and one walk over five innings against the Mariners. He struck out three.

After going eight innings last time out against the Red Sox, Lyles went just five innings and threw 91 pitches Tuesday. However, his shortened outing didn't prevent him from serving up four home runs on the day, setting a single-game season-high in the category. Over his last five appearances (28.2 innings), Lyles owns a 7.22 ERA and an 18:5 K:BB. He's tentatively scheduled to face off against the Cubs this weekend.

Giolito (7-9) took the loss Tuesday, allowing four runs on seven hits and two walks over six innings in a 7-3 loss against the Rangers. He struck out five.

Giolito surrendered four extra-base hits on the day, including a two-run home run to Corey Seager in the third inning as he took his third loss in his last four starts. Giolito's endured a rough start to his tenure in Los Angeles, owning an ugly 8.14 ERA and 1.57 WHIP along with a 19:2 K:BB and 2.6 HR/9 through 21 innings. Though he's faced some of baseball's top offenses in Atlanta, Toronto and Texas since joining the Angels, Giolito's tentatively scheduled for another tough start against the Reds next week.

Montgomery (2-1) earned the win Tuesday, allowing one run on six hits over six innings in a 7-3 win over the Angels. He struck out nine.

Montgomery delivered a fourth consecutive quality start Tuesday, allowing one run across six innings while tying his season high in strikeouts. The performance also snapped Montgomery's streak of four straight starts allowing a home run. In three starts since being acquired by the Rangers, Montgomery boasts a 2.50 ERA to go along with a 20:2 K:BB over 18 innings. He's tentatively scheduled to toe the rubber again during a two-game series at Arizona early next week.

Javier did not factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits and a walk over 4.2 innings against the Marlins. He struck out two.

Javier hadn't allowed more than three runs in a start since July 3, pitching to a 4.44 ERA over his previous five outings. After holding the Marlins off the board in the first inning, the 26-year-old Javier allowed at least one run in each of his subsequent four innings before he was pulled in the fifth after throwing 95 pitches. Overall, Javier's 8-2 with a 4.49 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 112:42 K:BB across 23 starts (122.1 innings) this season. He'll look to bounce back in his next outing, currently scheduled for next week against Boston.

Faedo tossed five scoreless innings but settled for a no-decision Tuesday against the Twins. He allowed just one hit, a walk and a hit batter while striking out six.

Making his second straight start against Minnesota since getting recalled from Triple-A Toledo, Faedo was very sharp, though the Tigers didn't push him too hard as they limited the righty to 81 pitches. Faedo still left with a chance to earn his third win of the year, but the Detroit bullpen allowed five runs in the eventual 5-3 loss. The 27-year-old should stick in the rotation moving forward, and he will look to build on this promising outing and continue to chip away at his 5.16 ERA. Faedo is tentatively set to start again Sunday against the Guardians.

Allen (6-5) earned the win Tuesday, allowing four hits and three walks over six scoreless innings against the Reds. He struck out seven.

Allen's allowed just three runs over his last three starts (17 innings) after surrendering nine earned runs in his previous two outings. The rookie southpaw lowered his ERA to 3.33 with a 1.36 WHIP and 95:38 K:BB across 18 starts (97.1 innings) this season. Allen will look to keep rolling in his next outing, currently scheduled for this weekend at home against Detroit.

Rays manager Kevin Cash said Tuesday that McClanahan (forearm) will undergo Tommy John surgery, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

McClanahan had already been ruled out for the rest of 2023, but a Tommy John procedure will likely keep him out for all of 2024 as well. The 26-year-old southpaw landed on the injured list Aug. 3 and will undergo surgery sometime next week. He finishes 2023 with a 3.29 ERA and 1.18 WHIP alongside a 121:41 K:BB ratio through 115 innings.

Houck (face) is lined up to return from the injured list and start Monday against the Astros, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.

After undergoing surgery to repair a facial fracture suffered in June, Houck is officially set to make his return after a two-month absence. The 27-year-old righty has already made two rehab appearances with Triple-A Worcester, surrendering two runs and striking out six batters over 4.2 innings, and he's slated to make one more start before his return to Boston. Houck put up a 4.32 ERA and 1.16 WHIP across his last five starts prior to landing on the IL.
