  • Wilmer Flores SP | DET

Tigers' Wilmer Flores: Kicks off rehab assignment

Flores (hamstring) began a rehab assignment with High-A West Michigan on Tuesday, striking out one over two scoreless innings while giving up two hits and no walks.

Flores' appearance for West Michigan was his first at any level since July 20 after he had been sidelined with a right hamstring strain. He remains on Double-A Erie's 7-day injured list but should be activated at some point in early September.

  • Guardians' Lucas Giolito: Nabbed by Guardians via waivers

Giolito was claimed off waivers by the Guardians on Thursday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.

Cleveland is six games under .500 but just five games out in the American League Central, so they've decided to jump at the opportunity to improve their rotation by adding only salary and not giving up any players. Giolito posted a 6.89 ERA over 32.2 innings during his short time with the Angels, but he struck out 34 and provides the Guardians with a viable addition to a rotation which has been hit hard by injury. He last pitched on Monday, so Giolito could theoretically make his Cleveland debut as soon as Saturday.

  • Alex Faedo SP | TB

Tigers' Alex Faedo: Slated for multi-inning relief role

Faedo will be used in a multi-inning relief role with the Tigers for the time being, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.

It's possible Faedo will get a start or two in September if the situation dictates it, but for now the Tigers will see how he fares in a multi-inning bullpen role. He and Joey Wentz could piggyback for some outings in the coming weeks. Faedo holds a 4.98 ERA over 11 starts for Detroit this season.

  • Luis Medina RP | ATH

Athletics' Luis Medina: Sharp in rehab outing

Medina (blister) struck out seven and gave up one earned run on four hits and one walk over 3.1 innings in a rehab start with Triple-A Las Vegas on Wednesday.

Medina missed the previous two weeks of action with a blister on his right index finger but didn't seem to be affected in Wednesday's outing. The Athletics haven't yet committed to Medina returning from the 15-day injured list next week, but he looks as though he could be ready to go without requiring any additional rehab outings beforehand.

  • Sonny Gray SP | BOS

Twins' Sonny Gray: Hurls seven shutout frames

Gray did not factor into the decision Wednesday, allowing three hits and one walk over seven scoreless innings against the Guardians while striking out five.

Gray surrendered a leadoff double to Steven Kwan to open the game before retiring the next 13 batters he faced. The right-hander allowed just three hits on the afternoon but was still unable to log his fourth win this month due to a lack of run support. Gray has now pitched at least six shutout innings in two of his last four starts while it was his second time this season hurling seven shutout frames. He's also logged quality starts in seven of his last eight outings.

  • Tanner Bibee SP | CLE

Guardians' Tanner Bibee: Allows two runs in no-decision

Bibee did not factor into the decision Wednesday, allowing two runs on four hits and three walks over five innings in a 5-2 win over the Twins. He struck out eight.

Bibee held the Twins scoreless over the first four innings before allowing a walk and a single in two of the first three at-bats to open the fifth, which would lead to two runs coming across for Minnesota. The 24-year-old right-hander was able to get through the inning but would not return in the sixth as the Guardians eventually went on to win in extra innings. Bibee still has not allowed more than three earned runs in any start since June 13 and he's allowed two or fewer runs in 10 of his last 12 outings. He's also recorded at least five strikeouts in five straight starts and currently holds a 2.83 ERA in August.

  • Bryce Miller SP | SEA

Mariners' Bryce Miller: Settles for quality start

Miller came away with a no-decision Wednesday in the Mariners' 5-4 victory over the A's, giving up three runs on seven hits over six innings. He struck out five without walking a batter.

A Lawrence Butler two-run homer in the second inning helped put Seattle in an early hole, but Miller shut down the Oakland offense the rest of the way and exited the game after 94 pitches (63 strikes) with the score tied 3-3. The rookie right-hander has two quality starts in his last three outings, but his last one before that came June 18 as he's had trouble completing six innings consistently. Despite the bumps in the road, Miller will take a respectable 3.93 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 100:21 K:BB through 107.2 innings into his next start, which is likely to come next week in Cincinnati.

  • Reid Detmers SP | LAA

Angels' Reid Detmers: Command issues in no-decision

Detmers did not factor into the decision Wednesday, allowing two runs on four hits and three walks over four innings against the Phillies. He struck out three.

Detmers struggled with his command from the start, beaning a batter in each of the first two innings before allowing two runs to come across for Philadelphia. The lefty needed 33 pitches to get through the second frame and failed to make it through five innings for the third time in his last six starts. He's also issued three or more walks in three of his last four outings and has given up at least two free passes in eight straight, going 1-4 over that stretch.

  • Kyle Gibson SP | BAL

Orioles' Kyle Gibson: Disastrous outing in loss

Gibson (13-8) took the loss Wednesday, allowing seven runs on nine hits over 4.1 innings against the White Sox while striking out two.

Gibson went 1-2-3 through the first inning before surrendering three consecutive hits to open the second, including a two-run homer off the bat of Andrew Vaughn. The right-hander went on to allow three home runs for the second time in his last four starts while recording only two two strikeouts, marking his lowest strikeout total since July 15. Gibson has now given up at least seven runs in two of his last four outings and has allowed at least nine hits in three of his last four, running his ERA up to 7.89 in the month of August.

  • Dylan Cease SP | TOR

White Sox's Dylan Cease: Allows five runs in win

Cease (6-7) earned the win Wednesday, allowing five runs on six hits and three walks over six innings against the Orioles. He struck out seven.

Cease got off to a horrendous start, allowing four runs on four hits in the first inning while also hitting Cedric Mullins with a pitch. He then surrendered a solo shot to Anthony Santander to open the third before hurling three scoreless frames to finish the day. The right-hander has now allowed at least five runs in back-to-back starts and has given up at least four runs in three straight. Furthermore, he's walked multiple batters in each of his last nine starts and holds an unflattering 33:22 K:BB in August.
