Yankees' Ian Hamilton: Could return Sunday
Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Friday that he expects Hamilton (illness) to be back for Sunday's series finale against the Padres, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports.
Hamilton was placed on the 7-day COVID-19 injured list Monday, and the right-hander appears to have recovered from the illness. Over 19 appearances this season, Hamilton has a 3.18 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and six holds across 22.2 innings.

Drew Smyly SP | CHC
Cubs' Drew Smyly: Nearing return
Cubs manager Craig Counsell said Friday that Smyly (hip) is likely to be activated from the injured list during this weekend's series against the Cardinals, Elise Menaker reports.
Smyly made a rehab start with High-A South Bend on Tuesday, throwing three perfect innings while striking out five. Despite the fact that Kyle Hendricks was moved to the bullpen and Jordan Wicks (forearm) remains on the IL, Counsell noted that he will use Smyly in a multi-inning relief role when he returns, rather than moving him into the rotation. Smyly appeared in nine games before going on the injured list, registering a 4.97 ERA and 1.34 WHIP over 12.2 innings.

Giovanny Gallegos RP | LAD
Cardinals' Giovanny Gallegos: Set for another bullpen
Gallegos (shoulder) will throw a bullpen session Saturday, Lynn Worthy of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
Gallegos continues to progress in his recovery from a right shoulder impingement that landed him on the injured list May 6. A successful session Saturday could put the 32-year-old right-hander on track for a rehab assignment and a return to the Cardinals' bullpen shortly thereafter.

Keynan Middleton RP | LAD
Cardinals' Keynan Middleton: Dealing with soreness
Middleton (forearm) reported soreness Friday after pitching in back-to-back games at Double-A Springfield, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.
Middleton gave up a solo home run and three walks while striking out two batters over those two outings. He will travel to St. Louis on Friday to be re-evaluated by the team. The 30-year-old righty has been on the injured list since the beginning of the season due to a strained right forearm.

Bryan Mata RP | BOS
Red Sox's Bryan Mata: Managing lat, shoulder soreness
Mata (hamstring) was pulled off his minor-league rehab assignment due to shoulder and lat soreness Friday and is traveling to Boston to be evaluated, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.
The right-hander threw three innings for Double-A Portland on Thursday, but his rehab assignment is now being paused. Mata is working his way back from a hamstring strain, and the new injuries will push back his return timeline.

Yoendrys Gomez RP | MIN
Yankees' Yoendrys Gomez: Recalled from Triple-A
The Yankees recalled Gomez from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Friday.
With Nick Burdi (hip) headed to the injured list, Gomez will fill the opening in New York's bullpen. The 24-year-old righty pitched two scoreless innings during his MLB debut last season and has posted a 3.62 ERA and 1.44 WHIP through 27.1 frames this year at Triple-A.

Dominic Leone RP | CHW
White Sox's Dominic Leone: Out with elbow inflammation
The White Sox placed Leone on the 15-day injured list Friday with right elbow inflammation.
Leone has just rejoined the roster this week after dealing with lower-back tightness, but he'll return to the injured list after making just one appearance for Chicago. It's unclear how long the veteran right-hander is expected to be sidelined.

Justin Anderson RP | CHW
White Sox's Justin Anderson: Back in majors
The White Sox recalled Anderson from Triple-A Charlotte on Friday.
The 31-year-old will join Chicago on Friday as Dominic Leone (elbow) heads to the injured list. Anderson has made three appearances for the White Sox and has spent most of the campaign with Charlotte, where he has a 2.50 ERA and 25:4 K:BB over 18 innings.

Nick Burdi RP | NYM
Yankees' Nick Burdi: Placed on injured list
The Yankees placed Burdi on the 15-day injured list Friday with right hip inflammation.
Burdi was able to get through only one-third of an inning during Thursday's win over Seattle, recording his lone out via strikeout and walking the other two batters he faced. It's unclear whether or not his hip had any impact on his performance, but the 31-year-old righty will miss at least the next 15 days. Yoendrys Gomez will come up from Triple-A to take Burdi's spot in the bullpen.

Brendan White RP | SEA
Tigers' Brendan White: Suffers elbow injury
White, who is currently assigned to Double-A Erie, is dealing with right elbow inflammation and began a throwing program this week, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.
White began the season at Triple-A Toledo but missed most of April due to elbow trouble that has been plaguing him since spring training. He returned to action with Single-A Lakeland on April 28, but the right-hander was shut down again May 8 after making one appearance for Erie. White pitched 40.2 innings for the Tigers last year with a 5.09 ERA, but he appears to be a long way from helping the big-league club in 2024.
