Spiers (5-7) took the loss Tuesday at Cleveland, pitching four innings while allowing three runs on five hits and two walks. He struck out two.

Spiers made his first start since Aug. 20, subbing in for the injured Julian Aguiar (shoulder). Things began poorly for the 26-year-old righty, as the Guardians tagged him for three runs, including two homers in the opening frame. He managed to generate only six whiffs out of his 69 total pitches. Spiers has been rough as a starter this season, pitching to a 6.62 ERA, 1.49 WHIP and 47:15 K:BB across 51.2 innings. If this marks his final appearance of the season -- Spiers could possibly appear in relief during the weekend -- he wraps the campaign with a 5.46 ERA over 90.2 innings total.

Wilson (oblique) could be activated from the 15-day injured list as soon as Wednesday, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports.

Wilson got through a multi-inning simulated game Monday with no problems, clearing the way for his return. He's been shelved for most of this month with a right oblique strain but is ready to return and state his case to be included on the Brewers' playoff roster.

Mears (forearm) could be activated from the 15-day injured list as soon as Wednesday, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports.

Mears threw a multi-inning simulated game Monday and came out of it with no issues. He's missed the last month of action with right forearm inflammation, but his activation appears imminent.

The Marlins recalled Maldonado from Triple-A Jacksonville on Tuesday.

He's taking the roster spot vacated by Mike Baumann, who has been placed on the paternity list. Maldonado, 26, holds a 6.75 ERA and 11:5 K:BB across 16 frames with the big club this season.

The Marlins placed Baumann on the paternity list Tuesday.

Baumann will likely miss the three-game series with the Twins before rejoining the team this weekend in Toronto. He has allowed 10 runs but boasts a 17:4 K:BB over 12.1 innings since being claimed off waivers by the Marlins last month.

The Cubs optioned Hollowell to Triple-A Iowa on Tuesday, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports.

He was just called up Monday but will be sent back down to make room for waiver claim Enoli Paredes, who has officially joined the active roster. Hollowell had a 1.1-inning scoreless relief appearance during his lone day with the big club.

Spiers will start Tuesday's game in Cleveland.

Spiers is taking the rotation spot created by Julian Aguiar's (shoulder) placement on the injured list. Jakob Junis, had initially been scheduled to start Tuesday, but he'll instead be pushed back to Wednesday while he tends to a personal matter. The right-handed Spiers holds a 5.40 ERA over 21 appearances (nine starts) for the Reds this season.

Junis has been scratched from Tuesday's start versus the Guardians due to personal reasons and will start Wednesday's series finale in Cleveland instead, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

Carson Spiers is now scheduled to start Tuesday, with Junis getting an extra day in between starts. Junis has been terrific over the last month for the Reds, allowing just three runs with an 18:1 K:BB over 23.2 innings covering four starts and one relief appearance.

The Reds reinstated Gibaut (forearm) from the 60-day injured list Tuesday.

The right-hander hasn't seen a big-league mound this season while coming back from forearm surgery, but he'll join the Reds for the final week of the campaign. Gibaut allowed five earned runs over 3.2 frames in four rehab outings with Triple-A Louisville and should fill a low-leverage relief role.

Spiers is likely to enter the Reds' rotation in place of the injured Julian Aguiar (shoulder), Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

Aguiar had been slated to make his final start of the season Wednesday in Cleveland, but that assignment should fall to Spiers, who will be on seven days' rest after throwing 46 pitches over three relief innings last week against Atlanta. It will be Spiers' first start since Aug. 20, when he allowed 10 runs (nine earned) across 4.1 frames in Toronto.
