Gus Varland RP | WAS
Dodgers' Gus Varland: Designated for assignment
The Dodgers designated Varland for assignment Tuesday.
Varland will join Nick Ramirez as the Dodgers' roster casualties, as the team needed to create space on the 40-man roster for new additions Kevin Kiermaier and Jack Flaherty. Varland has given up just two runs in six innings with the Dodgers this season, though his 7.99 ERA at Triple-A may make other teams hesitant to claim the 27-year-old righty off waivers.

Ryder Ryan RP | LAD
Pirates' Ryder Ryan: Removed from 40-man
The Pirates designated Ryan for assignment Tuesday.
During his last stint in the majors, Ryan allowed five earned runs in just four innings, and he surrendered four earned runs in just one-third of an inning during his most recent Triple-A appearance. He'll now be pushed off the 40-man roster in favor of Jake Woodford, who was selected from Indianapolis in a corresponding move.

Daulton Jefferies SP | PIT
Pirates' Daulton Jefferies: Moves to 60-day IL
The Pirates transferred Jefferies (elbow) to the 60-day injured list Tuesday.
Elbow inflammation forced Jefferies onto the injured list July 6, and his move to the 60-day IL ensures he'll be sidelined until at least Sept. 4. His spot on the 40-man roster will be given to Jalen Beeks, who was acquired in a trade with Colorado on Monday.

Miguel Castro RP | CHW
Diamondbacks' Miguel Castro: Dropped from 40-man roster
Castro was designated for assignment by the Diamondbacks on Tuesday, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports.
Castro appears to be the odd man out in the bullpen after Arizona acquired right-hander Dylan Floro from the Nationals on Tuesday. Castro will now be placed on waivers, and if he goes unclaimed, he'll either report to Triple-A Reno or elect free agency.

Ethan Roberts RP | CHC
Cubs' Ethan Roberts: Back in majors
The Cubs recalled Roberts from Triple-A Iowa on Tuesday, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports.
The Cubs traded Mark Leiter to the Yankees on Tuesday, so Roberts will now come up from the minors to fill the open spot in Chicago's bullpen. The 27-year-old hasn't allowed a run in six MLB innings this season, though he has surrendered three earned runs in three frames since returning to Triple-A earlier this month.

Carmen Mlodzinski RP | PIT
Pirates' Carmen Mlodzinski: Out with shoulder strain
Mlodzinksi was placed on the 15-day injured list Tuesday due to a right shoulder strain, Noah Hiles of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
The right-hander presumably suffered the injury in his appearance against the Astros on Monday, during which he allowed a hit and a walk over a scoreless inning. Mlodzinski will be eligible to be reinstated in mid-August, though it's unclear if he's expected to be healthy by that point.

Jesus Tinoco RP | MIA
Marlins' Jesus Tinoco: Claimed by Marlins
The Marlins claimed Tinoco off waivers from the Cubs on Tuesday.
After being DFA'd by the Cubs on Saturday, Tinoco will join a Marlins bullpen in need of extra depth following Tuesday's trade deadline. The 29-year-old righty has allowed nine earned runs in 14 innings in the majors this season, though he did not allow a run in four frames during his time with the Cubs. Braxton Garrett (forearm) was moved to the 60-day IL to clear space on the 40-man roster.

Dylan Floro RP | ARI
Diamondbacks' Dylan Floro: Snagged by Snakes
Floro was traded from the Nationals to the Diamondbacks on Tuesday in exchange for Andres Chaparro, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports.
The 33-year-old righty had a 2.06 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 40 strikeouts in 52.1 innings with the Nationals. While Floro has 32 career saves, he should assume a mid-leverage role with his new team.

Shawn Armstrong RP | CLE
Cardinals' Shawn Armstrong: Acquired by St. Louis
The Cardinals acquired Armstrong from the Rays on Tuesday in exchange for outfielder Dylan Carlson, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports.
Armstrong was dominant in 2023 with a 1.38, 0.90 WHIP and 54:11 K:BB over 52 innings, but he's labored this season with 5.40 ERA in 38 appearances. The right-hander should primarily work in middle relief for the Cardinals.

Tanner Banks RP | PHI
Phillies' Tanner Banks: Dealt to Philly
The White Sox traded Banks to the Phillies on Tuesday, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports.
Through 48 innings with the White Sox, Banks has posted a 4.13 ERA and 1.29 WHIP. Chicago's lack of reliever depth has forced him to work often in high-leverage situations this season, though it's likely he moves into a middle-relief role upon joining a more talented Phillies bullpen.
