Cardinals' Mike Mayers: Exits with trainer

Mayers was removed from Saturday's game against the Rockies with an apparent injury, Joe Trezza of MLB.com reports.

Mayers allowed two runs on three hits without recording an out before exiting the game with a trainer in the eighth inning. Specifics regarding the injury are not yet known.

  • Josh Fields RP | MIL

Dodgers' Josh Fields: Shifted to 60-day DL

Fields was shifted to the 60-day disabled list Saturday, J.P. Hoornstra of the Los Angeles Daily News reports.

This is simply procedural, as Fields, who landed on the disabled list at the end of June, wasn't expected to return until Sept. 1 anyway (after his 60-day window is up). The move frees up a 40-man roster spot for Julio Urias, who was reinstated from the 60-day disabled list and optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma City earlier in the day.

  • Nick Pivetta RP | SD

Phillies' Nick Pivetta: Jolted by Jays

Pivetta didn't factor into the decision in Saturday's 8-6 loss to the Blue Jays, coughing up five runs on seven hits and three walks over 6.2 innings while striking out four.

Despite the poor effort, the right-hander was still in line for his eighth win of the year before Seranthony Dominguez and Victor Arano combined to blow the save. Pivetta has now been tagged for 11 runs in 10.1 innings over his last two outings, inflating his ERA to 4.76 ahead of Friday's home start against the Cubs.

  • Mark Melancon RP | ARI

Giants' Mark Melancon: Grabs one-out save

Melancon recorded the final out of Saturday's 5-3 win over the Rangers to pick up his second save of the season.

Will Smith loaded the bases en route to retiring the first two batters in the ninth inning, so Melancon was called in to put out the fire. It's his first save since June 21, and while Smith's job as closer likely isn't in immediate jeopardy, another rough appearance or two could allow Melancon to sneak into the ninth-inning mix.

  • Andrew Suarez RP | BAL

Giants' Andrew Suarez: Shuts down Rangers for fifth win

Suarez (5-9) picked up the win in Saturday's 5-3 victory over the Rangers, allowing three hits and three walks over seven scoreless innings while striking out five,

It's the second time in his last three starts the southpaw has blanked the opposition, although he had a disastrous outing against the Reds sandwiched in between. Suarez's inconsistency has left him with a 4.42 ERA, but he'll look to avoid another downturn when he next takes the mound Friday at home against the Mets.

  • Josh Fields RP | MIL

Dodgers' Josh Fields: Won't return until September

Fields (shoulder) won't return until Sept. 1, Ken Gurnick of MLB.com reports.

Fields has been out since late June with shoulder inflammation. He's been rehabbing for over two weeks but will be out at least one more. He'll likely fill a setup role upon his return.

  • Clay Holmes SP | CHC

Pirates' Clay Holmes: Sent down after 15th-inning loss

Holmes was sent down to Triple-A Indianapolis on Saturday, Rob Biertempfel of The Athletic Pittsburgh reports.

The demotion comes the day after Holmes blew a two-run lead in the 15th inning Friday against the Brewers, allowing three runs on three walks and two singles while getting just two outs. Nick Kingham was called up to take his place on the roster.

  • Will Smith RP | KC

Giants' Will Smith: Let down by defense

Smith was charged with a blown save after giving up two runs (none earned) over an inning in Friday's extra-inning loss to Texas.

Smith was tasked with protecting a two-run lead in the ninth inning, but second baseman Joe Panik booted a routine grounder, opening the door for Rougned Odor to tie the game with a two-run homer. The silver lining for the closer's fantasy owners was that the two runs were not charged to his ledger. The rare misstep will not affect Smith's status as the Giants' top closing option, and he now owns a 1.87 ERA, 0.83 WHIP and 12.3 K/9 with 11 saves in 14 chances.

  • Mets' Robert Gsellman: Locks down eighth save

Gsellman gave up one hit and struck out two in a scoreless ninth inning Friday to record his eighth save of the season in a 3-0 win over the Nationals.

While he has yet to get a real crack at the full-time closer gig, Gsellman has been very effective lately for the Mets, posting a 1.80 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 15:6 K:BB over his last 18 appearances (20 innings), and he has one win, five saves and five holds over that span. Anthony Swarzak (shoulder) doesn't appear to be close to returning, so look for Gsellman to continue in his current role at least into September.

  • Giants' Dereck Rodriguez: Solid in return start

Rodriguez didn't factor into the decision against the Rangers on Friday, giving up two earned runs on three hits over six innings, striking out four and walking three in the Giants' eventual 7-6 extra-inning defeat.

Rodriguez didn't pick up his seventh win of the season in his first outing since coming off the disabled list with a hamstring strain, but the right-hander just continues to churn out solid stat lines. Rodriguez has now thrown six innings or more and given up two or fewer earned runs six straight starts, bringing his ERA down to 2.30 and his WHIP to an even 1.00 through 86 innings. Those ratios make him a solid fantasy contributor, even if his 69 strikeouts aren't an eye-popping number. He'll head back to the mound for a home matchup against the Diamondbacks on Wednesday.
