Adam was optioned to the Cubs' alternate training site Tuesday, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports.

Tyler Chatwood and Jose Quintana were both activated from the injured list, and Adam's demotion was one of the corresponding moves. He gave up three runs in 3.2 innings across three appearances in the majors.

Voth will stick in the rotation for at least one more turn Saturday at Boston, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports.

He was quite solid in his first two starts of the season, but has given up 14 runs on 21 hits and eight walks in 11.2 innings over his last three outings -- the worst of which came Monday against the Marlins. Manager Davey Martinez said that he will talk to Voth on Tuesday to emphasize sticking with his fastball more, particularly the second time through the lineup, adding "I'm not going to give up on him." If the Nationals had an obvious internal upgrade, they might be less patient with Voth. They could potentially acquire an upgrade prior to Monday's trade deadline.

Castano is starting Game 1 of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Mets, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports.

He only recorded one out in his last outing Aug. 22, so while he is starting on short rest, he is more rested than a typical starting pitcher on two days of rest. Even so, Castano should probably not be expected to go deep enough to qualify for the win.

The Nationals optioned Crowe to their alternate training site Sunday.

Washington summoned Crowe from the alternate site to make his MLB debut in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader with the Marlins. He lasted just 3.2 innings in the outing, taking the loss while giving up four runs on six hits and two walks while striking out two. Since he was serving as the Nats' 29th man in the twin bill, Crowe was never expected to stick around with the big club beyond Saturday, but he looks like he'll be the next man up to start if Washington requires another rotation member at some point.

Young, who has filled in for Madison Bumgarner (back), could stick in the rotation after Arizona placed starter Merrill Kelly (shoulder) on the injured list, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports.

Young was expected to make his final start in place of Bumgarner on Tuesday, but he could stay in the rotation for now while Kelly deals with his injury. In two starts, Young has a 4.32 ERA with nine strikeouts and three home runs allowed over 8.1 innings.

Clarke gave up two runs (one earned) on four hits and two walks over four innings in a no-decision versus the Rockies. He struck out four.

Clarke was called on for the start after Merrill Kelly was scratched with a shoulder injury. The 27-year-old Clarke did fairly well on short notice. He's posted a 2.33 ERA and 1.09 WHIP with 18 strikeouts in 19.1 innings in seven appearances, six of which have been in relief. Clarke could be in for another start this weekend while Kelly remains out.

Bard pitched a perfect ninth inning with a strikeout to earn the save in Monday's 3-2 win over the Diamondbacks.

Bard retired Eduardo Escobar and Nick Ahmed with groundouts before fanning Stephen Vogt to end the game. It was a change of pace to see Bard keep runs off the board -- he's allowed a run in three of his last five outings. The 35-year-old is up to two saves with a 4.15 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 15 strikeouts in 13 innings. Carlos Estevez, who has shared closing duties with Bard over the past couple weeks, logged 1.1 scoreless innings before Bard came in to close things out.

Helsley (illness) threw a side session Monday and could potentially throw live batting practice Tuesday, Richard Justice of MLB.com reports.

Helsley continues to make good progress toward an eventual return, and he could take another important step very quickly according to Justice's report. The right-hander's level of activity Tuesday will be determined by how well Helsley recovers from Monday's session, with manager Mike Shildt remarking the team will "continue to work on the timeline" with respect to the reliever's return to action.

Stephenson did not allow a baserunner in a scoreless eighth inning during Monday's 4-2 loss to the Brewers. He struck out one.

Stephenson was activated from the injured list earlier Monday after dealing with a back strain that held him out since July 25. The right-hander struck out Mike Moustakas to start the frame and got the next two hitters to ground out. Stephenson figures to see substantial action late in ball games going forward.

Hader picked up the save in Monday's 4-2 win over the Reds, allowing a walk and striking out one in a scoreless ninth inning.

Hader immediately brought the tying run to the plate by walking Joey Votto to start the ninth, but was able to retire the next three batters to end the game. Although the southpaw has allowed five walks, he has still yet to allow a hit or run in 8.1 innings pitched on the season.
