Reds' Jeff Hoffman: Diagnosed with shoulder impingement

Hoffman was diagnosed with a right shoulder impingement Thursday, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports.

Hoffman was placed on the 10-day injured list Thursday, but his shoulder injury won't require surgery. The right-hander is heading back to Cincinnati to be further examined, and a better idea of his return timetable could come into focus once his visit with the medical staff is complete.

  • John Brebbia RP | COL

Giants' John Brebbia: Beginning rehab assignment

Brebbia (elbow) is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment Thursday at Triple-A Sacramento, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.

Since Brebbia is working his way back from June 2020 Tommy John surgery, he'll likely need to make several appearances for Sacramento before the Giants will consider reinstating him from the 60-day injured list. During his last healthy season in 2019, Brebbia was a dependable arm out of the St. Louis bullpen, making 66 appearances while posting a 3.59 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 87:27 K:BB in 72.2 innings.

  • Hector Neris RP | HOU

Phillies' Hector Neris: Locks down ninth save

Neris picked up the save Thursday against the Marlins after tossing a scoreless inning that included one walk and a strikeout.

Neris entered the ninth inning with the Phillies leading by one and worked around a leadoff walk to Sandy Leon to finish off the close game. It was the second straight save against Miami for the right-hander, who is 9-for-11 in save chances while sporting a 1.99 ERA and 1.01 WHIP across 22.2 innings of work.

  • Yimi Garcia RP | TOR

Marlins' Yimi Garcia: Takes loss in relief

Garcia (3-3) was charged with the loss against the Phillies on Thursday after allowing one run on one hit and a walk while striking out two batters across one inning.

Garcia entered a tied game in the ninth inning and was haunted by a leadoff triple off the bat of Odubel Herrera. The right-hander managed to limit the damage to one run from there on out, but unfortunately, that would be enough to strap him with his third loss of the season. Across 21.2 innings this year, Garcia has tallied nine saves for the Marlins while compiling a 1.66 ERA and 0.92 WHIP.

  • Spencer Howard SP | CLE

    Phillies' Spencer Howard: Takes no-decision

Howard did not factor into the decision during Thursday's win, holding the Marlins to one run on two hits and three walks while striking out four across four innings.

Making his second start of the season, Howard was held to a low pitch count (66 pitches) as the right-hander continued to build upon his endurance. Howard looked relatively strong through his first four innings of work, holding the Marlins scoreless along the way. Unfortunately, he couldn't keep things moving in the fifth after loading the bases with no outs and was consequently pulled. Luckily the bullpen only allowed one of his baserunners to score. The 24-year-old is likely to get another chance in the rotation, presumably next week at Cincinnati.

  • Edwin Diaz RP | LAD

Mets' Edwin Diaz: Claims ninth save

Diaz picked up his ninth save of the season Thursday after striking out one in a perfect seventh inning in the Mets' 1-0 win over the Rockies in Game 1 of a doubleheader.

Diaz entered the ninth frame with the Mets holding onto a two-run lead. He came out hot, needing just three pitches to send Charlie Blackmon down on strikes. He then walked C.J. Cron before punching out his final two batters of the night, remaining perfect in save opportunities and helping the Mets snap a three-game losing streak. Across 19.1 innings this year, Diaz has compiled a 3.10 ERA.

  • Mets' Thomas Szapucki: Recalled for doubleheader

Szapucki was recalled by the Mets to serve as the 27th man in Game 2 of Thursday's doubleheader against the Rockies, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.

Szapucki began the 2021 campaign with Triple-A Syracuse and has recorded a 2.77 ERA and 1.38 WHIP in 13 innings across three appearances (two starts). He'll be available to make his major-league debut out of the bullpen during Thursday's nightcap but will likely head back to the minors following the twin bill.

  • Tanner Rainey RP | DET

Nationals' Tanner Rainey: Reinstated from injured list

Rainey was reinstated from the COVID-19 injured list Thursday, Jesse Dougherty of The Washington Post reports.

Rainey felt good after throwing an extended bullpen session Wednesday, and he'll be available for Thursday's matchup against Cincinnati. The right-hander posted a 7.30 ERA and 1.95 WHIP in 12.1 innings across 16 relief appearances to begin the year.

  • Cionel Perez RP | NYM

Reds' Cionel Perez: Recalled by Reds

Perez was recalled by the Reds on Thursday.

Perez has spent two separate stints with the Reds so far this year, posting a 7.71 ERA and a 12:14 K:BB in 14 innings of work. He'll likely be limited to low-leverage work during his time with the team. Jeff Hoffman (shoulder) landed on the injured list in a corresponding move.

  • Jeff Hoffman RP | TOR

Reds' Jeff Hoffman: Lands on injured list

Hoffman (shoulder) was placed on the 10-day injured list Thursday.

Hoffman left his start Wednesday against the Nationals with right shoulder soreness, and the issue is evidently serious enough to cause him to miss at least one start. His expected return date is not yet clear. The righty is pitcher better than usual this season after finally escaping Coors Field, but his 4.61 ERA and 1.59 WHIP are still not particularly impressive. Cionel Perez was called up in a corresponding move.
