Diamondbacks' Alex Young: Tabbed for spot start Tuesday

Young will be the starting pitcher for Tuesday's game against the Giants, Zach Buchanan of The Athletic reports.

Young started 22 games for Arizona across 2019 and 2020 but has shifted to a bullpen role thus far this season, posting a 3.45 ERA and 30:15 K:BB across 28.2 relief innings. He worked three innings (57 pitches) of one-run ball in his latest outing against the A's on June 8, which was his longest appearance of the season so far. With that in mind, the Diamondbacks will likely look to get multiple innings out of the southpaw, though he's unlikely to pitch past the fourth inning Tuesday.

  • Drew Pomeranz RP | CHC

Padres' Drew Pomeranz: Remains weeks away from return

Pomeranz (lat) is still a few weeks away from making a rehab assignment, the Associated Press reports.

When the lefty reliever went down with lat tightness in mid-May, there was optimism that his stay on the injured list could be short, and he was back to throwing soon after suffering the injury. However, Pomeranz subsequently experienced a setback while throwing to hitters, and he has yet to return to a mound. Given manager Jayce Tingler's indication Monday that Pomeranz won't make a rehab appearance for at least a couple weeks, the reliever's earliest possible return to the majors appears to be sometime in early July.

  • Blake Treinen RP | LAD

Dodgers' Blake Treinen: Secures 14th hold

Treinen picked up a hold Monday against the Phillies, allowing one hit and striking out two in a scoreless inning.

Treinen was deployed in the seventh inning with Los Angeles clinging to a two-run lead. He yielded a J.T. Realmuto infield single with one out but retired the following two batters to finish off the scoreless frame. Treinen is tied with teammate Victor Gonzalez for second in the league with 14 holds, and he has registered a 3.04 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 32:9 K:BB across 27 appearances covering 26.2 innings this season.

  • Tony Santillan RP | CIN

Reds' Tony Santillan: Getting another start

Santillan is scheduled to make his second start Friday against the Padres in San Diego.

Neither Sonny Gray (groin) nor Jeff Hoffman (shoulder) will be ready to return from the 10-day injured list when the Reds next require a fifth starter Friday, so Santillan will be awarded another turn through the rotation after a so-so MLB debut against Colorado over the weekend. Though he limited the Rockies to one run, efficiency was an issue for Santillan, who pumped in only 52 of his 97 pitches for strikes while failing to make it out of the fifth inning. He'll need to show better control against a strong Padres offense if he hopes to continue keeping runs off the board.

  • Clay Holmes RP | NYM

Pirates' Clay Holmes: Takes loss against Nats

Holmes (1-2) allowed one run on one hit in Monday's 3-2 loss to Washington. He struck out two batters.

The right-hander served up an eighth-inning homer to Kyle Schwarber that proved to be the difference in a one-run game. It's encouraging that Holmes is being used in more high-leverage situations, but he's given up at least one earned run in each of his last three outings.

  • Tyler Rogers RP | TOR

Giants' Tyler Rogers: Records hold Monday

Rogers allowed two hits in a scoreless inning in Monday's 5-2 win over Arizona.

The 30-year-old has allowed multiple baserunners in five of his last seven outings. Rogers appeared to take control of San Francisco's closer job in mid-May, but he worked the eighth inning Monday while Jake McGee threw a perfect ninth for the save. It's safe to say manager Gabe Kapler is going with a hot-hand approach in the ninth inning. Rogers has still put up excellent ratios with a 1.60 ERA and 1.01 WHIP across 33.2 innings, adding eight saves and 11 holds.

  • Sam Long RP | KC

Giants' Sammy Long: Working behind opener again

Long is expected to serve as the Giants' primary pitcher behind opener Zack Littell in Tuesday's game against the Diamondbacks, Mark W. Sanchez of KNBR 680 San Francisco reports.

In his major-league debut June 9 in Texas, Long excelled while working behind Littell. After Littell exited following a scoreless first inning, Long permitted only one run on one hit and one walk while striking out seven over four frames. Since Long didn't cover more than four innings in any of his six minor-league outings prior to his call-up last week, the Giants likely won't ask him to work much longer Tuesday than he did in his MLB debut. Even so, Long will still be the Giants pitcher most likely to factor into any decision against Arizona.

  • Zack Littell SP | WAS

Giants' Zack Littell: Working as opener again

The Giants announced that Littell will serve as their opening pitcher for Tuesday's game against the Diamondbacks, Mark W. Sanchez of KNBR 680 San Francisco reports.

Though the team didn't say so officially, Sam Long will almost certainly serve as the primary pitcher behind Littell after the two were effective while working in succession June 9 in Texas. After Littell tossed a scoreless first inning, Long followed with four innings of one-run ball. The Giants likely won't ask Littell to record more than three to six outs Tuesday before he gives way to Long.

  • Corbin Martin RP | CHC

Diamondbacks' Corbin Martin: May develop in majors

Arizona pitching coach Matt Herges indicated that Martin may continue his development in the majors, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports.

Martin was called up Monday ahead of what is presumed to be a start Tuesday against the Giants. While the organization would prefer he develop at the minor-league level, the Diamondbacks need starting arms, and their freefall -- they've lost 11 straight and 28 of 31 -- has given them the chance to let Martin develop at the MLB level. "I feel like we're in a position where we can do that a little bit more," Herges said. "We can bring guys up, test them in the major-league fire. Corbin is one of those guys, for sure." Martin had a rough two-start stint in the majors last month, picking up losses to the iron of the NL West -- the Dodgers and Giants -- then didn't fare well in his three starts for Triple-A Reno after being demoted.

  • Edwin Diaz RP | LAD

Mets' Edwin Diaz: Notches 13th save

Diaz struck out the side in a perfect ninth inning Monday to record his 13th save of the season in a 5-2 win over the Cubs.

The 27-year-old right-hander is dialed in right now, posting a 0.79 ERA, 0.62 WHIP and 18:2 K:BB over his last 11.1 innings -- numbers reminiscent of his dominant 2018 campaign in Seattle. On the season, Diaz has converted 13 of 14 save chances with a 2.70 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 35.6 percent strikeout rate.
