Shaw cleared waivers and was outrighted to the Mariners' alternate training site Wednesday.

Shaw was designated for assignment Saturday following a rough start to the 2020 season, but he'll remain in the organization. If he can demonstrate better results at alternate camp than he did in the majors, he could be a candidate to return to the 28-man roster at some point, but he's unlikely to have a very prominent role with the major-league club if he returns.

Richards should play a prominent role in Thursday's game against the Yankees, Neil Solondz of the Rays Radio Network reports.

Manager Kevin Cash hasn't yet confirmed a starter for Thursday's series finale against the Yankees, but he said that Richards will play a significant role in the contest. The right-hander has mainly struggled in his first four appearances this season, posting a 5.93 ERA and 1.78 ERA over 13.2 innings.

Farmer (groin) threw a 15-pitch simulated game Wednesday and could be activated Thursday, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.

Farmer has progressed smoothly in his recovery since being placed on the 10-day injured list, and his successful sim game was likely the final test prior to rejoining the active roster. Once he returns to action, he should resume his role as one of the top setup men in the Tigers' bullpen. The right-hander posted a 2.84 ERA and 1.11 WHIP over 6.1 innings to begin the season.

Puk (shoulder) will likely need a handful of more bullpen sessions before being deemed ready to face live hitters, the Associated Press reports.

The southpaw had a solid 30-pitch bullpen session at the Athletics' alternate training site in San Jose on Monday and is scheduled to throw another Wednesday. Puk may still need at least one more bullpen before he tests himself against some of the hitters at the site as he continues on a path that has a targeted early-September activation date from the injured list.

Gonsalves was designated for assignment Wednesday.

The Red Sox claimed Andrew Triggs, who they obviously viewed as a more worthwhile reclamation project than Gonsalves, who had not received a big-league start this year even amid Boston's rotation depth woes. Look for him to go unclaimed and remain at the alternate training site.

Alvarado (shoulder) saw a doctor in New York on Monday and will be shut down from throwing for 10-to-14 days, the Associated Press reports.

The burly southpaw was placed on the injured list Saturday with shoulder inflammation, and it appears he's headed for a much longer stay on it than the minimum 10 days. Alvarado looked out of sorts while trying to apparently pitch through the injury in his appearance Saturday, when he allowed four earned runs over two-third of an inning to the Blue Jays.

Barria pitched 4.1 innings in relief against San Francisco on Tuesday, allowing two runs on four hits and one walk while striking out four.

Barria was added to the active roster Tuesday and was put to use on his first day with the big club, hurling 66 pitches and getting more outs (13) than starter Dylan Bundy (12). Barria came on with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning and kept the Giants off the scoreboard until the ninth, when a trio of doubles netted San Francisco two runs. Given the right-hander's pedigree as a starter, it stands to reason that he'll take on a long-relief role in the Angels' bullpen and be an option should the team need to fill a hole in the rotation.

Shawaryn was designated for assignment by the Red Sox on Tuesday, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.

The move creates space on the 40-man roster for the Red Sox to add Christian Arroyo, who was claimed off waivers from Cleveland last week. Shawaryn struggled to a 9.74 ERA in his 20.1-inning debut last season.

Blue Jays manager Charlie Montoyo said that Thornton (elbow) will be activated from the 10-day injured list Thursday to start the second game of the team's doubleheader with the Phillies, Scott Mitchell of TSN.ca reports.

Thornton was placed on the IL earlier this month after experiencing right elbow inflammation, but he'll get the green light to rejoin the active roster after he came out of a live batting practice session Tuesday no worse for wear. While he'll tentatively be serving as a sixth starter this week for the Blue Jays, Thornton should have a clear path to a spot in the team's regular five-man rotation beginning next week after Toronto placed Nate Pearson (elbow) on the 10-day IL on Wednesday.

The Blue Jays placed Pearson on the 10-day injured list Wednesday with right elbow tightness, Mike Wilner of Sportsnet 590 The Fan reports.

Pearson admitted his elbow was barking following another poor start in Tuesday's 8-7 win over the Orioles, during which he surrendered five runs on four hits -- including three home runs -- while issuing three walks over four innings. Though the rookie said his elbow was feeling better when he met with the training staff early Wednesday, manager Charlie Montoyo confirmed that Pearson would undergo further testing as the Blue Jays look to gain more information about the extent of the injury, per Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet.ca. Since tossing five shutout innings in his MLB debut back on July 29, Pearson hasn't been sharp, posting a 9.53 ERA and 1.85 WHIP over his subsequent three outings. Montoyo said that Pearson's spot in the rotation would be taken by Trent Thornton (elbow), who will be activated from the IL to start one half of Thursday's doubleheader with the Phillies.
