Twins' Byron Buxton: Out Monday with general soreness

Buxton is out of the lineup Monday due to general soreness after running into the outfield wall Friday, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.

Buxton is available off the bench. He was also out of Sunday's starting lineup due to the issue.

  • Kennys Vargas DH | MIN

Twins' Kennys Vargas: Recalled from Triple-A

Vargas was recalled from Triple-A Rochester on Monday, Phil Miller of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.

The Twins called up Vargas to assume the roster spot of Trevor Plouffe, who was placed on the 15-day DL with a cracked rib. Vargas' power has long been regarded as his best tool, but a poor contact rate has made it difficult to establish himself as a viable lineup option in the big leagues. In addition, Vargas doesn't possess much positional versatility, and with Joe Mauer and Miguel Sano seemingly locked into regular roles at first base and DH, respectively, it may be difficult for the 25-year-old to make a legitimate push for at-bats.

  • Indians' Michael Brantley: On track for batting practice this week

Brantley (shoulder) is scheduled to take batting practice later this week, MLB.com's Jordan Bastian reports.

The Indians moved Brantley to the 60-day DL earlier Sunday, but that was merely a formality, since the outfielder's recovery timetable was always expected to extend beyond that span. There does seem to be growing optimism that Brantley may be able to return shortly after he's first eligible, though, as he's shown evidence of incremental progress over the last few days. He was able to hit off a tee last week and complete a soft-toss program, and batting practice would represent another step in the right direction. He could be ready to head out on a rehab assignment during or soon after the All-Star break.

Twins' Byron Buxton: Out of Sunday's lineup

Buxton is out of the lineup Sunday against the Rangers, MLB.com's Rhett Bollinger reports.

Buxton's streak of five consecutive starts will come to an end, as the newly-recalled Eddie Rosario will receive an opportunity to play. The 22-year-old Buxton has recorded at least one hit in seven of his last nine starts, but he's yet to truly get hot, with only one of those games being multi-hit efforts.

  • Indians' Michael Brantley: Transferred to 60-day DL

Brantley (shoulder) was transferred to the 60-day DL on Sunday, MLB.com's Jordan Bastian reports.

The transaction isn't of much consequence for Brantley, as his move to the 60-day DL means he can return no earlier than July 9. The Indians weren't planning to have the center field back until after the All-Star break anyway, so how quickly Brantley progresses through rehab activities with his shoulder will ultimately have more bearing on when he's activated. For the time being, it looks like the Tribe will go with a combination of Tyler Naquin, Rajai Davis and Abraham Almonte in center field.

  • J.D. Martinez DH | NYM

Tigers' J.D. Martinez: Slow rehab may mean end of July return

Martinez (elbow) is limited to cardio work and lower-body strength in his rehabilitation, and it seems likely his return will be pushed to the long end of the original 4-6 weeks, reports MLB.com.

It's been two weeks since he broke his elbow crashing into the wall in Kansas City. Martinez has tried to shag balls during batting practice, but running aggravates the pain because of the arm swinging. He will need to throw and hit before he can go to a rehab assignment, and that looks increasingly unlikely in the next two weeks. Don't count on Martinez until the end of July.

  • Miguel Cabrera DH | DET

Tigers' Miguel Cabrera: Not in Saturday's lineup

Cabrera is out of the lineup for Saturday's game against the Rays, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports.

Cabrera will get a day off for the first time in almost two months for Saturday's contest. In his place, the Tigers will start Jarrod Saltalamacchia at first base. This appears to be just an average day off for Cabrera, who will likely be back in the lineup Sunday.

  • AJ Reed DH | HOU

Astros' A.J. Reed: Not in Saturday's lineup

Reed is out of the lineup for Saturday's contest against the White Sox.

Reed will get a day off as manager A.J. Hinch is slotting in right-handed batters to face Chris Sale on Saturday. In his place, Marwin Gonzalez will get the nod at first base while Jose Altuve takes the DH spot.

  • Ryan Goins DH | KC

Blue Jays' Ryan Goins: Has been placed on disabled list

Goins (forearm) was placed on the 15-day DL on Saturday with forearm tightness, Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet reports.

Goins made an appearance on the mound during Friday's 19-inning affair with the Indians, and his forearm tightness could probably be traced back to his time on the hill. He has slowly been phased out of the starting lineup in recent weeks, having only started one game since June 17.

  • Brad Miller DH | SD

Rays' Brad Miller: Smacks 11th homer of season Friday

Miller went 1-for-4 with a two-run homer Friday against the Tigers.

Miller's 11th blast of the year got the Rays on the board in the ninth inning of a game they lost 10-2. This was his first game with more than one RBI since May 21, and he has 28 RBI on the season.
