  • Tres Barrera C | WAS

Cardinals' Tres Barrera: Outrighted to Triple-A

Barrera was outrighted to Triple-A Memphis on Wednesday, Brian Walton of TheCardinalNation.com reports.

Barrera passed through waivers unclaimed after being designated for assignment by the Cardinals on Saturday. The 28-year-old catcher drew only two plate appearances during his month-long stay on the major-league roster in St. Louis, largely because Willson Contreras was allowed to return to defensive duties.

  • Rays' Christian Bethancourt: Sitting Wednesday

Bethancourt is out of the lineup Wednesday versus the Twins, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Bethancourt and Francisco Mejia have now alternated catching duties over the past six games, with both backstops drawing three starts apiece. The playing time has generally tilted in Bethancourt's favor this season, so he should still be viewed as Option 1A behind the plate for Tampa Bay.

  • Nick Fortes C | TB

    Marlins' Nick Fortes: Sitting Wednesday

Fortes is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game versus the Royals, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.

Fortes gets a breather for the series finale after going 2-for-8 with two runs scored along with an RBI in the first two contests. Jacob Stallings will be behind the plate for Wednesday's game and hit eighth.

  • Elias Diaz C | KC

Rockies' Elias Diaz: Sitting out Wednesday

Diaz is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Giants.

Diaz appears to be receiving a routine day off after he started in seven of the Rockies' previous eight games. Austin Wynns will handle the catching duties for Colorado on Wednesday.

  • Twins' Christian Vazquez: Continues to rotate with Jeffers

Vazquez is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Rays.

Vazquez continues to work in a roughly even timeshare with Ryan Jeffers at catcher. The two backstops have now alternated turns behind the plate over the past 14 games, drawing seven starts apiece.

  • Keibert Ruiz C | WAS

Nationals' Keibert Ruiz: Gets Wednesday off

Ruiz is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Diamondbacks, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports.

Ruiz will get a breather after going 1-for-4 with a double in Tuesday's 10-5 loss. Riley Adams will handle backstop duties and hit eighth for Washington.

  • White Sox's Yasmani Grandal: Out again Wednesday

Grandal is out of the lineup Wednesday against the Yankees.

Seby Zavala will catch and bat ninth after slugging two home runs and tallying three total RBI to help the White Sox win 3-2 over the Yankees on Tuesday. It seems like a case of manager Pedro Grifol simply riding the hot hand, as Grandal has far out-hit Zavala over the course of the year.

  • Orioles' Samuel Basallo: Excelling against older competition

Basallo is hitting .291 with five home runs, a 22.4 percent strikeout rate and a 126 wRC+ through 46 games with Single-A Delmarva.

The second-youngest qualified hitter in the Carolina League behind Anthony Gutierrez, Basallo has handled his first full-season assignment very well. The 18-year-old catcher/first baseman has a 22.8 percent line-drive rate and a groundball rate under 40 percent, so his quality of contact has been strong. The Orioles believe Basallo is a good enough defender to stick behind the plate, but the fact he is already playing first base roughly a third of the time suggests he will play other positions besides catcher as he continues to climb the ladder.

  • Cardinals' Willson Contreras: Leaves yard Tuesday

Contreras went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Tuesday's loss to the Rangers.

Contreras took Dane Dunning deep to for his second home run in three games. Though he's found some power in his swing lately, Contreras has just four hits total over his last 14 games dating back to May 19, and for the year, he's slashing just .213/.299/.372 with seven homers, 27 RBI, 24 runs and a 24:55 BB:K over 234 plate appearances.

  • Pirates' Austin Hedges: Gets breather Wednesday

Hedges is not in the starting lineup Wednesday versus the Athletics, Kevin Gorman of TribLive.com reports.

Hedges will take a seat after he went 1-for-7 with a run scored, a walk and two strikeouts while starting the first two games of the series with Oakland. Jason Delay will start at catcher and bat ninth in the series finale Wednesday.
