  • Cubs' Willson Contreras: Resting for nightcap

Contreras will sit for the second half of Friday's doubleheader against the Cardinals.

Contreras went 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI in the first game of the twin bill. He won't be asked to catch twice in one day, so he'll rest in the nightcap while Austin Romine starts behind the plate.

  • Austin Nola C | COL

Padres' Austin Nola: Set for season-ending surgery

Nola was placed on the 10-day injured list Friday with a left thumb strain and will undergo season-ending surgery, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

It's not entirely clear when the issue initially arose, but it seems possible that Nola has been trying to play through the injury for a while. The backstop concludes the campaign with two homers to go along with a .272/.340/.376 slash line across 194 plate appearances. Webster Rivas was recalled from Triple-A El Paso and figures to share the catching duties with Victor Caratini during the final games of the season.

  • Phillies' J.T. Realmuto: Homers in three-hit day

Relamuto went 3-for-3 with a home run, two runs and four RBI in a 12-6 win against the Pirates on Thursday.

Realmuto entered the game in the sixth inning as a pinch hitter for Brad Miller and recorded hits in all three of his at-bats: singling in the sixth, swatting a two-run home run in the seventh and bringing home two more runs with an eighth-inning single. The All-Star backstop has enjoyed an excellent September, featuring a .299/.349/.468 slash line with eight extra-base hits.

  • Padres' Victor Caratini: Logs three hits, drives in winner

Caratini went 3-for-5 with two RBI in Thursday's 7-5 win over the Giants.

Caratini got the starting assignment with Yu Darvish on the mound for the Padres, and he responded with a game-winning RBI single in the 10th inning that snapped a 6-6 deadlock. Caratini also produced an RBI single in the first inning and finished with his first three-hit performance of the season. He is hitting just .221/.306/.311 on the year and is firmly behind Austin Nola in the No. 2 catching role.

  • Phillies' J.T. Realmuto: Sitting Thursday

Realmuto isn't starting Thursday's game against the Pirates.

Realmuto will get a breather after he went 5-for-16 with a triple, two doubles, four RBI, a run and a stolen base across the last four games. Andrew Knapp will start behind the dish and bat eighth.

  • Reds' Tucker Barnhart: Heads to bench

Barnhart will sit Thursday against Washington.

Barnhart will rest after starting five straight games behind the plate. Tyler Stephenson will take over for him, catching Luis Castillo.

Padres' Austin Nola: Takes seat Thursday

Nola isn't starting Thursday's game against the Giants, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

Nola will retreat to the bench for a second straight game. Victor Caratini will start behind the dish and bat eighth with right-hander Yu Darvish on the mound for the Padres.

  • Elias Diaz C | KC

Rockies' Elias Diaz: Not starting Thursday

Diaz will sit Thursday against the Dodgers.

Diaz owns a .999 OPS over his last 10 games. He'll get a rest Thursday, with Dom Nunez set to catch Kyle Freeland.

  • Will Smith C | LAD

    Dodgers' Will Smith: Resting Thursday

Smith is not in the lineup for Thursday's game against the Rockies.

Smith has swung a very hot bat lately, posting a .323/.434/.677 slash line with seven homers over his last 20 games. Austin Barnes takes over behind the plate Thursday and will catch Max Scherzer.

  • Omar Narvaez C | HOU

Brewers' Omar Narvaez: Heads to bench

Narvaez is not in the lineup for Thursday's game against the Cardinals.

Narvaez's off days typically come against lefties, but he'll sit here against righty Adam Wainwright. Manny Pina takes over behind the plate.
