  • Josh H. Smith SS | TEX

Rangers' Josh Smith: Fills in at shortstop

Smith started at shortstop and went 0-for-4 with a walk in Thursday's 4-3 loss to the Athletics.

Smith filled in for the injured Corey Seager (hamstring) and is expected to handle the strong side of a platoon at short in his absence. Nick Ahmed, whose contract was selected from Triple-A Round Rock earlier this week, started Wednesday against a lefty. Smith has also hit leadoff the last two times Texas has faced a right-handed pitcher.

  • Josh Jung 3B | TEX

Rangers' Josh Jung: Bounces back with solo homer

Jung went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Thursday's 4-3 loss to the Athletics.

Jung snapped a 10-game homer drought with a fourth-inning shot off Athletics right-hander J.T. Ginn. While Jung posted four multi-hit efforts in his first six outings of the year, he's cooled off considerably since then. The third baseman is hitting just .128 (5-for-39) with two doubles and two runs scored across his last 10 contests, but Jung should still see plenty of RBI opportunities as long as he's functioning from the heart of Texas' lineup.

  • Matt Chapman 3B | SF

Giants' Matt Chapman: Belts two-run homer vs. Milwaukee

Chapman went 1-for-5 with a two-run home run in Thursday's 6-5 win over the Brewers.

Chapman reduced the Giants' deficit to one run in the fifth inning, when he took Abner Uribe deep to center field for a two-run homer. It was Chapman's fifth home run of the season, three of which have come over his last eight games. Over that span, he has gone 6-for-25 with eight walks, one stolen base, four runs scored and seven RBI.

  • Miguel Vargas 2B | CHW

White Sox's Miguel Vargas: Belts first homer of 2025

Vargas went 1-for-3 with a solo homer and an additional run scored in Thursday's 3-0 win over Minnesota.

Vargas extended the White Sox's lead to three runs in the sixth inning, when he took Jorge Alcala deep to left-center field for a solo homer. It was Vargas' first home run of the season, and while he has a .163 average for the season, he's been marginally better of late with a .217 average in his past seven games.

  • Alex Bregman 3B | BOS

Red Sox's Alex Bregman: Stays hot in loss

Bregman went 2-for-3 with a solo home run and two total RBI in Thursday's 4-3 loss to the Mariners.

Bregman got Boston on the board with his home run off Bryan Woo in the first inning, his fifth long ball this season, before adding a second RBI with a two-out single in the third. Bregman has been red hot at the plate -- he's hit safely in five straight games, going 8-for-18 (.444) with four extra-base hits in that span. The 31-year-old Bregman is now slashing .320/.393/.563 with 21 RBI and 17 runs scored through his first 117 plate appearances with the Red Sox.

  • Paul DeJong 3B | WAS

Nationals' Paul DeJong: Will have surgery on broken nose

Nationals manager Dave Martinez said Thursday that DeJong will undergo surgery to repair his fractured nose, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports.

DeJong also visited an eye specialist Thursday and was cleared of any issues there. The veteran infielder went on the 10-day injured list last week after a Mitch Keller pitch struck him in the face and broke his nose. It appears DeJong has avoided any additional injuries, but there's no timetable for his return.

  • Royce Lewis 3B | MIN

Twins' Royce Lewis: Cleared to begin rehab assignment

Lewis (hamstring) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A St. Paul on Friday, Phil Miller of The Minnesota Star Tribune reports.

Lewis has been ramping up his running this week and didn't encounter any setbacks, so he's been cleared to test out his left hamstring in game action. It's not clear how many rehab contests Lewis will need before being activated from the IL, but he's missed over a month of action, so it will likely be more than a few games.

  • Jose Tena SS | WAS

Nationals' Jose Tena: Sitting against lefty

Tena isn't in the lineup for Thursday's game against the Orioles, Spencer Nusbaum of The Washington Post reports.

The lefty-hitting Tena will grab a seat on the bench against southpaw Cade Povich and the Orioles. Amed Rosario will pick up a start at the hot corner and bat sixth while Tena sits.

  • Trey Lipscomb 3B | WAS

Nationals' Trey Lipscomb: Sent back to Rochester

The Nationals optioned Lipscomb to Triple-A Rochester on Thursday.

With CJ Abrams returning from the injured list Thursday, Lipscomb will head back to the minors after spending roughly a week with the Nats serving as emergency infield depth. The 24-year-old went 2-for-4 with a run scored during his lone start and is slashing .295/.392/.386 through 51 plate appearances in Triple-A.

  • Caleb Durbin 3B | MIL

    Brewers' Caleb Durbin: Idle Thursday

Durbin isn't in the lineup for Thursday's game against the Giants.

Durbin has gone 6-for-23 with three RBI and four runs scored since making his MLB debut Friday. He'll now get his first day off of the season while Vinny Capra starts at the hot corner and bats eighth.
