Pirates' Alika Williams: Recalled from Triple-A

Williams was recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis prior to Saturday's game against the Cubs, Kevin Gorman of TribLive.com reports.

Ke'Bryan Hayes was placed on the injured list with a back issue, so Williams could see some reps in the infield in the short term. Williams was optioned Friday and never actually got into a Triple-A game. He has a .239/.271/.348 slash line with zero home runs and one steal in 51 plate appearances in the majors.

  • Ketel Marte 2B | ARI

Diamondbacks' Ketel Marte: Swats eighth homer

Marte went 1-for-5 with a solo home run in Friday's 4-2 loss to the Orioles.

He took Cole Irvin deep in the third inning, giving Marte his eighth homer of the season and third in the last five games. The 30-year-old second baseman also extended his hitting streak to 11 games with the solo shot, but he's batting just .261 (12-for-46) during that stretch as he's managed only one multi-hit performance.

  • Nick Gonzales 2B | PIT

Pirates' Nick Gonzales: Drives in two

Gonzales went 1-for-4 with two RBI in Friday's loss to the Cubs.

Gonzales was recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis on Friday and immediately entered the starting lineup, hitting fifth while starting at second base. He delivered a two-RBI single in the first inning but also struck out twice. Gonzales should have a chance to seize regular playing time as the Pirates continue to try to get their offense on track.

  • Nolan Gorman 2B | STL

Cardinals' Nolan Gorman: Homers off bench Friday

Gorman hit a solo home run in his lone at-bat during Friday's 11-2 loss to the Brewers.

Gorman entered the game as a defensive replacement after the Brewers turned it into a rout, and his ninth-inning blast ended the 24-year-old's 0-for-14 skid to begin the month of May. The second baseman is slashing a meager .179/.262/.350 with five homers, 13 RBI, nine runs scored, five doubles and no stolen bases over 130 plate appearances. Gorman began the year in a near-everyday role at the keystone, but he's now sat out against the last three southpaws the Cardinals have faced, with Jose Fermin picking up the playing time. Gorman had reverse splits last season and that has carried over into 2024, but he's simply not hitting well enough overall to justify a full-time role.

  • Thairo Estrada 2B | BAL

Giants' Thairo Estrada: Homers in Friday's loss

Estrada went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Friday's 4-2 loss to the Reds.

Estrada is enjoying a strong start to May, hitting safely in eight of his 10 games this month. He's gone 12-for-40 (.300) in that span, adding two homers and eight RBI. The second baseman has a .248/.276/.434 slash line with six homers, 21 RBI, 17 runs scored and one stolen base through 39 contests overall. Estrada is on pace for a career year in homers, but his overall performance is down and the Giants' weak offense hasn't helped him rack up counting stats.

  • Nolan Gorman 2B | STL

Cardinals' Nolan Gorman: Sitting versus left-hander

Gorman is not in the starting lineup for Friday's contest with the Brewers, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.

Gorman will take a seat as left-hander Robert Gasser makes his major-league debut on the mound for Milwaukee. Jose Fermin will draw the start at second base in his place and bat leadoff against the Brewers.

  • Alika Williams SS | PIT

Pirates' Alika Williams: Sent down Friday

Williams was optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis on Friday.

After making the Opening Day roster, Williams has produced a .239 batting average with two triples, a double, two RBI, seven runs scored and a stolen base over 46 at-bats in 15 games with the Pirates so far in 2024, but he'll now head to Indianapolis. In his place, Nick Gonzales was recalled from Triple-A and will likely see most of his work at second base moving forward.

  • Bryson Stott 2B | PHI

Phillies' Bryson Stott: On bench Friday

Stott is out of the lineup for Friday's game against Miami.

Stott will defer to Whit Merrifield at second base with a lefty (Trevor Rogers) on the mound for Miami. Stott is slashing .250/.344/.389 through 128 plate appearances this season.

  • Rockies' Brendan Rodgers: Showing improvement

Rodgers went 1-for-4 with a run scored Thursday against the Giants.

Rodgers played his part in a seven-run fourth inning for Colorado by reaching base on a single and coming around to score. It was an otherwise unremarkable game, but he has at least one hit in 11 of his last 13 starts and has hit .313 (15-for-48) with a homer, five RBI and six runs scored in that span. Rodgers still has a poor .632 OPS for the season, but he is showing signs of life at the plate.

  • Nick Gonzales 2B | PIT

Pirates' Nick Gonzales: Recalled from Triple-A

The Pirates recalled Gonzales from Triple-A Indianapolis on Thursday, Andrew Destin of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

Gonzales has spent all season in Triple-A, slashing .358/.431/.608 with four homers and 19 RBI across 137 plate appearances. The 24-year-old infielder will give the Pirates another player capable of fielding multiple positions, and he could dethrone the struggling Jared Triolo as Pittsburgh's primary second baseman.
