  • Josh Bell DH | MIN

Pirates' Josh Bell: Out again Tuesday

Bell (groin) isn't in the starting lineup for Tuesday's game against the Mariners.

Unsurprisingly, Bell will be held out again Tuesday after suffering a left groin injury Friday night. He's not expected to return to the starting lineup until Pittsburgh's series against Milwaukee at the earliest. Jose Osuna should see time at first base until Bell is cleared to return.

  • Joey Votto 1B | TOR

Reds' Joey Votto: Back in starting nine

Votto (illness) is starting at first base and batting second Tuesday against the Cubs.

Votto was scratched from Monday's lineup due to illness, but he's been cleared to return for the second game of the series. He's batting .340 with two homers, six RBI and eight walks over 14 games in September.

  • Matt Beaty 1B | KC

Dodgers' Matt Beaty: In mix for postseason roster

Beaty is a serious candidate to make the postseason roster, Bill Plunkett of The Orange County Register reports.

Beaty did not begin the season identified as one of the organization's top prospects but has made an impact with his steady bat and versatility in the field. He has compiled a .279/.328/.485 slash line with nine homers and 46 RBI in 250 plate appearances this season while seeing time at first base, third base and in left field. Although manager Dave Roberts has not committed to Beaty's inclusion on the postseason roster, he did acknowledge that the absence of Alex Verdugo (oblique) has opened the door for such a scenario to take place.

  • Garrett Cooper 1B | ATL

Marlins' Garrett Cooper: Headed back to Miami

Cooper (knee) was sent back to Miami on Monday for further evaluation, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports.

Cooper has been battling a knee injury since Friday, and the Marlins have elected to send him for further testing. He seems unlikely to play in Miami's series against Arizona.

  • Keston Hiura 2B | LAD

Brewers' Keston Hiura: May enter as defensive replacement

Hiura (hamstring) could be available to enter Monday's contest against the Padres as a defensive replacement if his pregame workout goes as planned, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports.

The Brewers are understandably exercising caution with the rookie second baseman, but he could take a big step forward Monday if his pregame work goes well. Skipper Craig Counsell noted that the team will continue to monitor Hiura's hamstring on a daily basis.

  • Garrett Cooper 1B | ATL

    Marlins' Garrett Cooper: Still sidelined

Cooper (knee) remains out Monday against Arizona, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports.

Cooper hasn't played since leaving Friday's game against the Giants with a knee injury. Tests revealed no serious injury, but he'll sit for the third game in a row nonetheless. Harold Ramirez gets the start in right field.

  • Diamondbacks' Christian Walker: Out of lineup

Walker is not starting Monday against the Marlins.

Walker has gone 2-for-28 over his last eight games. Jake Lamb gets the nod at first base Monday in his absence.

  • Anthony Rizzo 1B | NYY

Cubs' Anthony Rizzo: Diagnosed with moderate sprain

Rizzo was diagnosed with a moderate lateral right ankle sprain Monday and will not require surgery, Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

It's certainly not a well-timed injury for Rizzo and the Cubs, but he's at least avoided a fracture, a ligament tear or a more severe category of sprain. He's expected to spend the next 5-to-7 days in a boot and will be re-evaluated following that period. That will leave him with at most a handful of games to play for the rest of the regular season, and there's been no indication that he's expected to be cleared immediately after the boot comes off, so there's a very real chance his regular season campaign is over.

  • Keston Hiura 2B | LAD

Brewers' Keston Hiura: Sits again Monday

Hiura (hamstring) remains out of the lineup Monday against the Padres.

Hiura was activated from the 10-day injured list Wednesday but still hasn't been cleared to actually start a game. He's made a pair of appearances off the bench, though so his return to the lineup likely isn't too far away. Cory Spangenberg starts at second base Monday.

  • Joey Votto 1B | TOR

    Reds' Joey Votto: Battling illness

Votto was scratched from the lineup Monday against the Cubs due to illness, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

Votto is reportedly one of a number of players who have been sick in recent days for the Reds. While he'll have to miss at least a game or two, it's a positive that he's not dealing with the sort of injury which could rule him out for the rest of the season.
