Keston Hiura 2B | LAD
Tigers' Keston Hiura: Cut from big-league camp
The Tigers reassigned Hiura to minor-league camp Thursday.
Hiura recorded three hits in Wednesday's Grapefruit League game to raise his spring average to .323, but it ultimately wasn't enough to survive the latest round of cuts. Perhaps he can opt out of his minor-league deal and pursue another opportunity, though a bench player with his defensive limitations is tough for any team to carry.

Ryan Mountcastle 1B | BAL
Orioles' Ryan Mountcastle: Playing Wednesday, as expected
Mountcastle (neck) is starting at first base and batting cleanup in Wednesday's spring game against the Phillies, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.
The 27-year-old hasn't been in the lineup since Friday due to neck stiffness, but he's ready to rejoin the starting nine Wednesday. The fact Mountcastle is playing defense instead of just serving as the designated hitter indicates there's not much concern over the injury.

Trey Cabbage 1B | PIT
Astros' Trey Cabbage: Optioned to minors
The Astros optioned Cabbage to Triple-A Sugar Land on Tuesday, Chandler Rome of The Athleticreports.
The 26-year-old was acquired by the Astros from the Angels in late January, and he's now set to begin 2024 at the Triple-A level. Cabbage had a .553 OPS in 22 games for the Halos last season but spent most of the campaign at Triple-A Salt Lake, where he slashed .306/.379/.596 with 30 homers and 32 steals in 107 contests.

Jared Walsh 1B | CHW
Rangers' Jared Walsh: Set up for strong-side platoon role
The Rangers prefer to use a platoon of Walsh and Ezequiel Duran at first base while Nathaniel Lowe (oblique) is sidelined, Jeff Wilson of RangersToday.com reports.
The Duran part of the platoon will be in effect only if he's not needed to fill in at shortstop for Corey Seager (groin), but for now there's optimism Seager will be ready. Walsh appears set to start at first base versus righties initially either way, as he's had an impressive camp as a non-roster invitee in slashing .286/.419/.571 with three home runs. It could just be a short-term gig for Walsh, although if he gets off to a nice start he might be an option at designated hitter after Lowe returns.

Nolan Schanuel 1B | LAA
Angels' Nolan Schanuel: Feeling better but still out
Schanuel (back) has reported improvement but remains out of the Angels' lineup Tuesday, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports.
Schanuel was a late scratch Monday with back tightness and will sit out an additional contest Tuesday. He could return to action as soon as Wednesday. Schanuel is slashing .244/.311/.366 with one home run in 16 Cactus League games.

Joey Votto 1B | TOR
Blue Jays' Joey Votto: Taking on-field BP
Votto (ankle) will take batting practice on the field Tuesday, Hazel Mae of Sportsnet reports.
Votto rolled his right ankle in the dugout Sunday and has been receiving treatment. There's no timetable for when he'll be ready for games again, but the fact that he's been cleared for on-field BP is a good sign. Votto is expected to begin the season at Triple-A Buffalo.

Ryan Mountcastle 1B | BAL
Orioles' Ryan Mountcastle: Set to return Wednesday
Mountcastle (neck) expects to play in Wednesday's Grapefruit League game against the Phillies, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.
A return for Tuesday's exhibition had been mentioned as a possibility, though that was seen as a best-case scenario after Mountcastle reported neck stiffness over the weekend. He will instead stay back and take live batting practice to prepare for his return to action Wednesday. The 27-year-old has had a bit of a slow spring with a .592 OPS in nine games, but he appears on track to be ready for Opening Day and still projects to see a lot of playing time at DH to begin the season.

Nolan Schanuel 1B | LAA
Angels' Nolan Schanuel: Nursing minor injury
Schanuel (back) was evaluated further after being scratched from Monday's exhibition against the Brewers, and he was told by trainers that it's not serious, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports.
The Angels can breathe a sigh of relief as Schanuel appears to have avoided a significant injury. The team figures to closely monitor the 22-year-old over the next few days to ensure he's ready to go for Opening Day.

Nolan Schanuel 1B | LAA
Angels' Nolan Schanuel: Dealing with back tightness
Schanuel was scratched from the Angels' Cactus League lineup Monday against the Brewers because of back tightness, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.
Schanuel had been slated to play first base against the Brewers but will be replaced by Miguel Sano. Consider the 22-year-old day-to-day for the time being.

Spencer Horwitz 1B | PIT
Blue Jays' Spencer Horwitz: Struggling at plate this spring
Horwitz is batting .138 (4-for-29) with his only extra-base hit being a double through 12 Grapefruit League games.
The 26-year-old came into camp with a chance to win a spot on the Toronto bench as a left-handed complement to Vladimir Guerrero at first base and Justin Turner at DH, but Horwitz has done little to secure the gig. The organization's subsequent moves to bring in Daniel Vogelbach and Joey Votto suggest Horwitz is headed for some minor-league seasoning. He slashed .337/.450/.495 over 107 games for Triple-A Buffalo last year, and his 6:7 BB:K this spring reflects his strong plate discipline, but he'll need to make more consistent hard contact to have much of a big-league future.
