Giants' Ben Sauls: In two-way race for kicking job

Sauls is set to compete during training camp with undrafted rookie Dominic Zvada for the Giants' kicker job, Dan Salomone of the team's official site reports.
Sauls was the Giants' kicker in Weeks 16-18 and went 8-for-8 on field-goal attempts and 7-for-7 on extra-point tries. He didn't show much of a leg to go with that accuracy, however, as his longest FG last year was from a modest 45 yards. New York parted ways with long-time kicker Graham Gano (neck) in late March, leaving Sauls as the most likely option to begin the 2026 campaign. However, Zvada could challenge for the role with a strong training camp after a decorated college career that included the most field goals (seven) made from 50-plus yards in Michigan history.

Giants' Ben Sauls: Emerges as reliable option as rookie

Sauls made all four of his field-goal tries and both of his extra-point attempts in Sunday's 34-17 Week 18 win over Dallas. He finished the campaign having gone 8-for-8 of FG attempts and 7-for-7 on PAT tries.
Sauls was initially signed by Pittsburgh as an undrafted free agent and also spent time with Atlanta before latching on with the Giants in mid-November. When veteran kicker Graham Gano (neck) landed on IR around the same time, New York first turned to Younghoe Koo, but Sauls eventually got his chance after Koo was cut in mid-December. In his three contests to close the campaign, Sauls didn't miss a kick, though it has to be noted that only one of his FG tries -- a successful 45-yarder to open the scoring this past Sunday -- came from 40 or more yards out. Still, Sauls did nothing to suggest he can't be a reliable NFL kicker, and he could begin next season in that role for the Giants if the team decides to part ways with the oft-injured Gano.

Sauls' field goals came from 32 and 23 yards, and he's now perfect through two games as the Giants' kicker. Sauls has made all three of his field-goal tries and is 6-for-6 on extra points. He'll wrap up the 2025 season against Dallas in Week 18 next Sunday.

Sauls made his NFL debut last Sunday against the Vikings, converting both of his field-goal attempts and his sole extra-point try in the loss. The kicker will make his second start Sunday against the Raiders, this time as a part of the 53-man roster.

The Giants appear likely to sign or elevate Sauls from the practice squad to handle kicking duties Sunday versus the Vikings after the team waived Younghoe Koo on Tuesday, Ryan Dunleavy of the New York Post reports.
Following Koo's dismissal, Sauls is the only kicker remaining on New York's 53-man roster or practice squad, making him the logical choice to replace Koo unless the Giants opt to sign another kicker in the coming days. If he receives the nod for Week 16, Sauls would become the Giants' fourth full-time kicker this season. Since going undrafted out of Pittsburgh this spring, Sauls has been part of three different organizations but has yet to make his NFL debut. He converted field-goal attempts at an 81.3 percent clip over his five-year collegiate career.

The Falcons signed Sauls to the practice squad Tuesday, Terrin Waack of the team's official site reports.
Sauls was cut by the Steelers in late August after failing to beat out Chris Boswell for starting kicking duties in training camp. Saul's addition to the practice squad comes after head coach Raheem Morris said Monday that the Falcons would bring in competition after Parker Romo went 0-for-2 on field goals in Atlanta's 30-0 loss to Carolina on Sunday, per Waack. Sauls went 5-for-6 on field-goal attempts across three preseason games with the Steelers.

The Steelers waived Sauls on Monday, Teresa Varley of the team's official site reports.
With Chris Boswell sitting out while seeking a contract extension, Sauls handled the kicking duties in all three of the Steelers' preseason games, going 5-for-6 on field-goal attempts while making all six of his extra-point tries. Boswell will remain on the Steelers' roster as the team's starting kicker, but Saul should get an opportunity to compete on another team whose kicking situation is less solidified.
