Canning pitched six scoreless innings, giving up two hits and no walks while striking out six batters, in bulk relief against Toronto on Thursday.

The Angels trailed 5-0 by the time Canning got the ball in the third inning, but the right-hander kept his club in the contest with six dominant scoreless frames. This was the first time Canning worked in any capacity other than a traditional starter this season, and he adapted well to the role in racking up 13 whiffs and throwing 54 of 74 pitches for strikes. It wouldn't be surprising if the Angels have Canning work behind an opener again in his next appearance given the results Thursday. He had been struggling with a 5.41 ERA and 1.42 WHIP across 133 frames prior to the superb outing against Toronto.

Springs (1-2) took the loss Thursday against Oakland, allowing three runs on seven hits and two walks across 3.1 innings. He struck out three.

After completing five innings in three straight starts, Springs failed to get through the fourth Thursday. While all three of his allowed runs came before the fourth frame, Springs was removed after 82 pitches following a Darell Hernaiz double. Since making his season debut in late July, Springs has a 4.50 ERA with four home runs allowed and a 24:7 K:BB over 22 innings. He's on track to face the Mariners early next week.

Bido (5-3) picked up the win Thursday against Tampa Bay, allowing one run on two hits and three walks across five-plus innings. He struck out six.

After tossing back-to-back shutout starts, Bido was excellent once again Thursday. He allowed two or fewer hits in for a third consecutive start and punched out six batters for the fifth time in his last six outings. After posting a sub-par 5.86 ERA with the Pirates in 2023, Bido has a 3.24 ERA and a 51:24 K:BB across 50 innings this season. The 28-year-old is tentatively scheduled to face the Reds in Cincinnati next.

Lodolo (9-6) took the loss against Pittsburgh on Thursday, allowing five runs on two hits and three walks while striking out nine batters over 4.2 innings.

On the plus side, Lodolo racked up 17 whiffs and nine punchouts -- his most since he struck out 11 Padres on April 29. Despite that, the left-hander's outing ended on a very sour note, as he followed four scoreless frames with a disastrous fifth. In that inning, Lodolo gave up only one hit -- an infield single -- but also experienced a loss of control, hitting two batters and walking two more. He gave up two runs before departing with two outs and the bases loaded, then watched from the dugout as all three of the runners he passed over to the bullpen came around to score. Lodolo is 1-3 in his past five starts and has an ugly 9.75 ERA over that span.

Skenes (8-2) earned the win over Cincinnati on Thursday, allowing two hits and one walk while striking out nine batters over six scoreless innings.

Skenes gave up a walk and a single in the first inning but came out of the frame unscathed on the scoreboard. He was absolutely dominant thereafter, yielding only one more baserunner, who was wiped out on a subsequent double play. Recent conversations in the Pittsburgh organization have centered on shortening Skenes' outings at some point moving forward, but it's not clear if that was a consideration Wednesday, as the rookie phenom was pulled after six frames despite a modest 87 pitches -- his fewest since his MLB debut May 11. Regardless, Skenes has been efficient and excellent enough to be an elite fantasy option even with a slightly reduced workload. He now has a 2.16 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and 130:25 K:BB over 104 innings covering 17 starts.

Sanchez (9-9) took the loss against Atlanta on Thursday, allowing three runs on nine hits and one walk over six innings while striking out eight.

Sanchez got knocked around early, surrendering seven hits and a walk over the first three frames as Atlanta took a 2-1 lead. The lefty would allow the leadoff man to reach in five of his six innings of work while also allowing nine hits on the night -- the second-most he's allowed in a start this season. On the bright side, Sanchez matched his third-highest strikeout total of the campaign in Thursday's loss and he's now posted quality starts in three of his last four outings.

Schwellenbach (5-6) picked up the win over the Phillies on Thursday, allowing two runs on three hits and one walk over 6.2 innings. He struck out nine.

Schwellenbach allowed two of the first three batters to reach in the opening frame, ultimately resulting in a run coming home for Philadelphia. However, the right-hander proceeded to go 1-2-3 through each of the next five innings, striking out eight batters over that stretch before surrendering another run in the seventh. Schwellenbach induced 20 whiffs in the contest and has now recorded at least seven strikeouts in six consecutive starts. It also marked the first win this month for the 24-year-old, though he's now given up three or fewer runs in five straight outings.

Abbott won't start Friday against the Pirates but could be available in bulk relief, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

Abbott was originally listed as the probable pitcher for Friday's game, but the Reds have since named Buck Farmer as the official starter. Farmer hasn't completed more than two innings in any appearance this season, so he'll presumably be in store for an abbreviated outing before Abbott likely enters the game and covers several frames.

Mikolas did not factor into the decision Thursday, allowing two hits and a walk over six scoreless innings against the Brewers. He struck out three.

Mikolas held the Brewers in check, allowing merely one walk after the first inning during one of his most effective outings of the season. He entered Thursday's contest having allowed 25 runs in 31 innings (7.26 ERA) over his last six starts but kept the Brewers off the board in posting his first quality start since July 8. While Mikolas rewarded the Cardinals with a solid effort, his teammates failed to return the favor, waiting until after he was removed from the game to put the winning runs on the board. He'll look to continue this momentum into his next scheduled start, slated to take place at home in a tough matchup against the Padres.

Mize (hamstring) struck out five over 3.1 innings and gave up one earned run on three hits and two walks in his rehab start Sunday with Triple-A Toledo.

In his third outing with Toledo, Mize built up to 63 pitches (39 strikes). He's expected to make one more start with the Triple-A club Saturday before making his return from the 60-day injured list when first eligible Aug. 30 or shortly thereafter.
