  • Tigers' Ty Madden: Lifted early in return

Madden took a no-decision Monday against the Rays, allowing two runs on three hits and two walks in 3.1 innings. He struck out four. After missing about two weeks with a right forearm contusion, Madden got a very quick hook Monday in a subpar outing. The 26-year-old right-hander made his first start of the season following three relief appearances, and he threw only 48 pitches (28 strikes) before his evening came to a close. Madden, who has a 3.07 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 16:4 K:BB over 14.2 innings, could be headed back to Detroit's bullpen when Justin Verlander (hip) is ready to rejoin the rotation.

  • Tigers' Ty Madden: Activated ahead of Monday's start

The Tigers activated Madden (forearm) from the 15-day injured list Monday. Madden is set to start Monday's game against the Rays after missing the last couple weeks with a right forearm contusion. The right-hander threw 4.1 innings and 70 pitches in his lone rehab start and should be capable of stretching out to 80 pitches or so Monday in Tampa Bay.

  • Tigers' Ty Madden: Cleared to make rehab start

Madden (forearm) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Toledo on Monday, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. It's been a quick bounce-back for Madden, who landed on the 15-day injured list just over a week ago with a bruised right forearm. He's eligible to return from the IL on Sunday and could be activated at that time, though it's unclear what role he might fill. Madden has pitched well as a bulk reliever for the Tigers, posting a 2.38 ERA and 12:2 K:BB over 11.1 innings, but with Troy Melton back in the fold, there might not be room to carry Madden on the big-league roster.

  • Tigers' Ty Madden: X-rays negative

X-rays on Madden's right forearm came back negative following his removal from Friday's game against Toronto, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. Madden took a 107.9-mph line drive off his forearm in the third inning of Friday's contest and was taken out of the game immediately afterward. Initial imaging suggests he escaped the incident without a fracture, but the Tigers are going to run additional tests on him as a precaution. He's tentatively lined up to start Wednesday's game against the Guardians, though that could change depending on how he feels and the results of his tests.

  • Tigers' Ty Madden: Drawing start Friday

Madden will start Friday's game versus the Blue Jays, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. Madden has been terrific in two bulk-relief outings, allowing three runs with a 12:2 K:BB over 11 frames. The top of Toronto's lineup is heavy on right-handed bats, so the right-handed Madden will work as a traditional starter Friday. Madden threw 87 pitches his last time out and will be operating on five days' rest, so he'll be available for a full workload.

  • Tigers' Ty Madden: Covers six frames in bulk relief

Madden allowed three runs on two hits and two walks while striking out five batters over six relief innings in a no-decision versus Kansas City on Saturday. Detroit opted to go with an opener Saturday, so Madden didn't enter until the third frame. That saved him from being tagged with a loss, though it also prevented him from notching a quality start, which he would have earned otherwise with three runs allowed across six innings. Madden covered a starter's workload, tossing 87 pitches, 53 of which were strikes. The right-hander has worked in bulk relief in each of his two outings so far this season and has fared well, as he tossed five scoreless frames with seven punchouts in his previous appearance May 4 versus Boston. Given that success, the Tigers may opt to keep deploying Madden behind an opener, but regardless he seems likely to continue working as a rotation piece for Detroit.

  • Tigers' Ty Madden: Drawing start Saturday

Madden will be the Tigers' starting pitcher for Saturday's game in Kansas City, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports. Madden earned a traditional start after excelling in bulk relief in his season debut Monday versus the Red Sox, striking out seven over five scoreless frames. The right-hander threw 81 pitches in that outing and has been a starting pitcher this year during his time at Triple-A Toledo, so he shouldn't have any workload limitations Saturday.

  • Tigers' Ty Madden: Fires five scoreless in return

Madden did not factor into the decision Monday against the Red Sox, allowing four hits while striking out seven over five scoreless innings. Making his first MLB appearance since 2024, Madden delivered an impressive return after being recalled from Triple-A Toledo Monday morning. The right-hander entered after Tyler Holton opened the game with a clean first inning and quickly settled in, attacking the zone and throwing 50 of his 81 pitches for strikes and punching out seven. The outing was especially encouraging for Detroit, who are dealing with the loss of Tarik Skubal, as Madden stepped in and provided a performance reminiscent of an ace. After missing all of 2025 with a shoulder strain, the 26-year-old showed no signs of rust and could be in line for a continued role moving forward.

  • Tigers' Ty Madden: Solid so far this spring

Madden allowed a run on two hits across 3.2 innings in Tuesday's Grapefruit League contest against the Red Sox. He walked three and struck out two. The three walks were a bit worrisome, but Madden otherwise held his own against a Boston lineup featuring a number of regular starters. The righty has allowed just the one run across 5.2 innings this spring. Madden, who missed the entire 2025 season while recovering from a right rotator cuff strain, has already been optioned to Triple-A Toledo, and the team will likely want to see him get some innings under his belt there to shake off rust. However, Madden could be an option for an MLB promotion at some point down the road if he looks good in the minors.

  • Tigers' Ty Madden: Expected to be ready for camp

Madden (shoulder), who missed all of the 2025 season, is expected to be ready for spring training, MLB.com reports. Madden sustained a right rotator cuff strain last spring and ended up missing the entire season as a result. After a long recovery period, the 25-year-old righty appears to be ready to take the mound again. As a rookie in 2024, Madden appeared in six games for the Tigers, posting a 4.30 ERA across 23 innings. He figures to compete for a bullpen role during camp.

  • Tigers' Ty Madden: Not set to pitch in 2025

Manager A.J. Hinch said Tuesday that the Tigers have no expectation for Madden (shoulder) to pitch in any games this season, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. Madden will continue his throwing progression as the season winds down, but the Tigers are making it a priority for the 25-year-old to enter the offseason at full health rather than counting on him to contribute in the minors or majors in 2025. The right-hander made six appearances (one start) for Detroit as a rookie last season but didn't make much of a run for a spot in the Opening Day rotation in spring training before he was shut down in early March with a rotator cuff strain.

  • Tigers' Ty Madden: Ready for mound work

Madden (shoulder) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Wednesday, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. After sustaining a right rotator cuff strain in spring training, Madden was placed on the 15-day injured list shortly before Opening Day and then transferred to the 60-day IL a day later when Detroit needed to open up a spot on the 40-man roster. As a result of the transaction, Madden won't be eligible to make his 2025 debut with the Tigers until late May, though the fact that he's already been cleared for mound work suggests he could be ready for activation at that time. Once he completes multiple bullpen sessions and faces live hitters without issue, Madden will embark on a rehab assignment that could last for the entirety of the 30-day window, as the Tigers presumably want him to build up as a starter. It's unclear if he'll have a rotation spot available for him with the big club once he's activated, however.

  • Tigers' Ty Madden: Moved to 60-day IL

The Tigers transferred Madden (shoulder) to the 60-day injured list Friday. A right rotator cuff strain has kept Madden out since early March, and his move to the 60-day IL will ensure he remains out until late May. His spot on the 40-man roster will be given to Brewer Hicklen, who was acquired from Milwaukee on Friday.

  • Tigers' Ty Madden: Ineffective in relief Saturday

Madden allowed three runs on four hits and a walk across three innings of relief during Saturday's 4-0 loss to the White Sox. He struck out two. Opener Beau Brieske was tagged with the loss for allowing just a single run, but Madden didn't help matters during his uneven relief appearance. The 24-year-old righty had a sharp 2.55 ERA over his first four outings following his first MLB promotion in late August, but he now has a 10.12 ERA over his last two games. The Tigers are headed to the postseason and have some decisions to make with their pitching staff, so it remains to be seen if Madden makes the playoff roster and gets to pitch again during his rookie campaign.

  • Tigers' Ty Madden: Allows two runs in relief

Madden did not factor into the decision in Monday's 3-0 loss to the Padres, allowing two runs on four hits and no walks with two strikeouts over four innings. Madden was used as a bulk reliever and tossed four scoreless frames before yielding two runs without recording an out in the eighth. The rookie has allowed three earned runs with an unimpressive 3:3 K:BB across nine major-league innings and could make another appearance this weekend against the Athletics, assuming he continues to work as a starter or primary pitcher.

  • Tigers' Ty Madden: Slated to pitch Monday

Madden is expected to pitch in Monday's game against the Padres at Petco Park, either as a traditional starter or a bulk reliever, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. Madden came up from Triple-A Toledo to make his MLB debut in a starting role this past Monday against the White Sox, covering five innings while giving up two runs (one earned) on four hits and three walks while striking out two. While the Tigers initially listed him as their expected starter for Sunday's game against the Red Sox, the team ultimately changed its plans and deployed Beau Brieske as an opener in front of Brant Hurter. Assuming Madden does in fact pitch Monday, he'll line up for two appearances this week, with his second outing projected to come Sunday in Oakland.

  • Tigers' Ty Madden: Mixed bag in MLB debut

Madden allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits and three walks while striking out two batters over five innings in a no-decision against the White Sox on Monday. Madden was called up from Triple-A Toledo ahead of Monday's outing to make his big-league debut. The right-hander gave up an unearned run in the first inning but hung tough and surrendered just one more run over the remainder of his start. While he struggled with his control at times, issuing three walks and throwing a modest 52 of 87 pitches for strikes, Madden didn't surrender any extra-base hits and showed poise in mostly avoiding damage despite allowing at least one runner to reach base in each of his five frames. However, the 24-year-old didn't didn't display the strikeout stuff he's exhibited in the minors -- Madden has fanned 102 batters over 79 innings at Toledo but punched out just two hitters and induced only eight whiffs Monday. If he gets another turn in the rotation, it's tentatively slated to come against Boston this weekend.

  • Tigers' Ty Madden: Contract selected ahead of debut

The Tigers selected Madden's contract from Triple-A Toledo, and he will start in Monday's series finale against the White Sox. Madden will make his major-league debut Monday as he provides the Tigers some relief for their starting rotation, which has been decimated by injuries. Madden was promoted to Toledo in late April, and in his 18 starts in Triple-A this season he's posted a 3-5 record with a 7.97 ERA, 1.77 WHIP and 102:40 K:BB over 79 innings. If he is able to fare well in his MLB debut, he could stick around with the big club and earn another start down the road.

  • Tigers' Ty Madden: Promoted to Triple-A

Madden was promoted to Triple-A Toledo on Monday, Emily Waldon of Baseball America reports. Madden has made four starts with Double-A Erie this season, producing a 2.55 ERA and 0.79 WHIP with 22 strikeouts over 17.2 innings. He'll now get a chance to continue his hot start to 2024 at the next level, joining Triple-A for the first time in his career. In a corresponding move, right-hander Austin Bergner was optioned from Toledo to Double-A Erie.

  • Tigers' Ty Madden: Finishes strong at Double-A

Madden has a 2.43 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 50 strikeouts in 37 innings over his last seven starts for Double-A Erie. The 23-year-old righty has a 3.43 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 146 strikeouts in 118 innings at Double-A after making seven starts at the level to close out 2022. Madden can get in trouble when he walks too many batters, but he's struck out seven or more batters in five of his last seven starts, thanks in large part to his plus slider. He will likely open next season at Triple-A, but Madden is poised to make his big-league debut sometime in 2024.
