  • Jose Urena SP | LAA

Marlins' Jose Urena: Bullpen session on tap

Urena (back) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Tuesday, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.

The Marlins shut Urena down for about a month while he recuperated from a herniated disc in his lower back, but the right-hander was able to initiate a throwing program about three weeks ago. With Urena's back responding well to flat-ground work, he'll be cleared to take another step forward by getting on the mound Tuesday. He'll likely need to complete several side sessions before the Marlins allow him to face live hitters and eventually, head out of a minor-league rehab assignment. Based on where he currently stands in his recovery, Urena seems unlikely to return from the 60-day injured list until September.

  • Zach Davies SP | WAS

Brewers' Zach Davies: Headed to IL

Davies was placed on the 10-day injured list Monday due to back spasms, Robert Murray of The Athletic reports.

It's unclear when Davies picked up the injury, but it could help explain his recent struggles; in his past three starts, the right-hander has allowed 18 runs (17 earned) on 20 hits -- including six home runs -- while posting a 10:6 K:BB in 13 innings. Manager Craig Counsell isn't concerned that the issue is a long-term one, per Sophia Minnaert of Fox Sports Wisconsin, though the skipper didn't offer up a timetable for Davies' return. Jake Faria was summoned from the minors in a corresponding move, while the Brewers have yet to announce who will replace Davies in the rotation.

  • Johnny Cueto SP | LAA

Giants' Johnny Cueto: Aces first rehab test

Cueto (elbow) struck out five over two perfect innings Sunday in his first rehab start with the Giants' rookie-level Arizona League affiliate.

The appearance marked Cueto's first competitive action since he required Tommy John surgery last August. The 33-year-old's ability to pitch in a game just a year after the major arm injury speaks well to the progress he's made thus far, but he'll still require several more appearances in the minors before the Giants entertain activating him when rosters expand Sept. 1. While Cueto showed pinpoint control (19 strikes on 21 pitches), he'll need to show he can command his full arsenal effectively in his subsequent outings against higher-caliber competition to warrant a look with San Francisco in 2019.

  • Pablo Lopez SP | MIN

Marlins' Pablo Lopez: Still on rehab assignment

Lopez will make his third rehab start Wednesday with Double-A Jacksonville, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.

According to Wells Dusenbury of the South Florida Sun Sentinel, manager Don Mattingly said last week that he wants Lopez (shoulder) to build up to 100 pitches in his rehab assignment before the Marlins activate the right-hander from the 10-day injured list. Lopez, who has been on the shelf since June 17 with a right shoulder strain, has already completed two rehab starts, with his most recent one coming Friday with Jacksonville. Lopez only retired two batters -- both via strikeout -- in that start while allowing three runs on two hits and two walks. Since he only covered 30 pitches in that outing, Lopez will presumably need around 2-to-3 more rehab starts until he gets the green light to rejoin the Marlins. Hector Noesi is expected to replace the since-traded Zac Gallen in the Miami rotation this week and should stick as the Marlins' fifth starter while Lopez is on the comeback trail.

  • Ian Anderson RP | ATL

Braves' Ian Anderson: Moves up to Triple-A

The Braves promoted Anderson from Double-A Mississippi to Triple-A Gwinnett on Monday, Gabe Burns of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.

The Braves are teeming with impressive young arms in the upper levels of their minor-league system, and Anderson may be the most impressive of the lot. He experienced little resistance from Southern League competition during his time with Mississippi, logging a 2.68 ERA and striking out 147 across 111 innings. The 21-year-old will face a much stiffer test while making the jump to Triple-A, where offensive production has been on the rise this season thanks in part the incorporation of the same baseball being used in the big leagues. If Anderson acquits himself well in the heightened offensive environment, he could earn a callup to Atlanta in September, though a bullpen role would likely await him in that scenario.

  • Max Fried SP | NYY

Braves' Max Fried: Misses out on two step

Fried, who was listed as the Braves' probable starter for Tuesday's game against the Twins, will be pushed back in the pitching schedule with Mike Foltynewicz now on track to get the starting nod Tuesday, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports.

Foltynewicz will be summoned from Gwinnett to fill the rotation spot vacated by Kevin Gausman, who was claimed off waivers by the Reds on Monday. Though Gausman wasn't in line to start until later in the week, the Braves likely chose to bring back Foltynewicz early to keep him on a normal rest schedule. The Braves haven't outlined their rotation plans beyond Tuesday, but Fried is likely on track to start the series finale Wednesday in Minnesota. The change in the Braves' pitching plans will result in Fried missing out on a two-start week.

  • Kevin Gausman SP | CHC

Reds' Kevin Gausman: Lands with Reds on waiver claim

The Reds acquired Gausman from the Braves on Monday after claiming him off waivers, sources tell Jeff Passan of ESPN.com.

Gausman's move to Cincinnati seemingly comes out of nowhere, as there weren't any prior reports suggesting that Atlanta had exposed him to waivers. In any case, the Reds will pick up the remaining money he's owed on his one-year, $9.35 million contract and will have him under control through his final year of arbitration in 2020. The 28-year-old righty -- whose last start came against the Reds, incidentally -- posted a 6.19 ERA and 1.49 WHIP while striking out 85 in 80 frames for Atlanta this season. According to Jim Bowden of The Athletic, the Reds plan on using Gausman as a reliever.

  • Joe Musgrove SP | SD

Pirates' Joe Musgrove: Dealing with back issue

Musgrove pitched through back stiffness during Sunday's outing against the Mets, 93.7 The Fan in Pittsburgh reports.

Speaking during a postgame interview, Musgrove admitted that he was unable to extend his follow-through completely. He said that he might have slept on his back awkwardly and the issue may be short term, but it's something to keep an eye on. Musgrove is currently scheduled to pitch in St. Louis on Saturday, where he's surrendered 12 earned runs in 7.2 innings in 2019.

  • Cardinals' Adam Wainwright: Takes eighth loss

Wainwright (7-8) took the loss against the Athletics on Sunday, allowing three earned runs on six hits, three walks and two hit batsmen over 5.1 innings. He struck out seven.

It was an interesting turn for the veteran, who kept the Cardinals in the game with a solid outing overall but also had significant location issues. Wainwright only got 59 of his 99 pitches into the strike zone, although he did notch a solid 11 swinging strikes overall. The right-hander has rebounded to an extent from yielding seven earned runs over 3.1 innings to the Reds on July 19 by allowing four earned runs or less in his subsequent three starts. Wainwright will look to get back in the win column and even up his record when he faces the Pirates next Friday or Saturday.

  • Hyun-Jin Ryu SP | TOR

Dodgers' Hyun-Jin Ryu: Could return by Sunday

Manager Dave Roberts said Sunday that Ryu (neck) will likely return from the 10-day injured list to start either Aug. 11 against the Diamondbacks or Aug. 13 in Miami, Rowan Kavner of MLB.com reports.

Ryu's placement on the 10-day injured list Friday with a sore neck came as a surprise, but as anticipated, the Dodgers are viewing it as merely a short-term setback for the All-Star. If Ryu makes it through his throwing program this week without incident, he could be ready to go against Arizona in the final game of the Dodgers' homestand. Tony Gonsolin was summoned from Triple-A Oklahoma City to make a spot start in Ryu's stead Monday against the Cardinals.
