Diamondbacks' Brandon Pfaadt: Falls short of quality start
Pfaadt yielded two runs on two hits and three walks over 5.1 innings in a no-decision Monday. He struck out four in the loss against the Cardinals.
Pfaadt stifled the Cardinals over five shutout innings before a two-run single by Lars Nootbaar knocked him out of the game in the sixth. Since earning a win in his season debut, Pfaadt has allowed 15 earned runs over his last 24 innings. Despite striking out only four batters, he forced 10 whiffs Monday, his second-highest total of the season. Hunter Greene SP | CIN
Reds' Hunter Greene: Lasts seven innings in defeat
Greene (0-2) suffered the loss Monday, allowing four runs on seven hits and two walks over seven innings against the Phillies. He struck out six.
Greene gave up three doubles and a triple among seven hits allowed but was able to limit the damage by allowing only one run in each of the second through fifth innings. The first three Phillies runs scored on two sacrifices and a fielder's choice, while they were limited to one run in the fifth thanks to an inning-ending double play with a runner in scoring position. While Greene effectively kept the Reds in the game, the offense couldn't muster a single run against Philly starter Ranger Suarez, saddling Greene with his second loss. The seven innings pitched were a season high for Greene, who will take a 4.55 ERA and 1.30 WHIP into his next start, tentatively scheduled to take place over the weekend in Arlington against the Rangers.

The Miami lefty has been surprisingly effective in his first five starts this year, pitching to a 3.16 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 23:12 K:BB over 25.2 innings. Merrill Kelly SP | ARI
Diamondbacks' Merrill Kelly: Likely headed for IL
Kelly (shoulder) is expected to require a stint on the 15-day injured list, Theo Mackie of The Arizona Republic reports.
The D-Backs were initially hopeful that Kelly would be able to avoid a 15-day shutdown, but skipper Torey Lovullo stated after Monday's matchup that the right-hander is "most likely" headed to the IL to rehab from a shoulder strain. Arizona will likely wait until Tuesday to make the move official.

Bryce Elder SP | ATL
Braves' Bryce Elder: Victorious in season debut
Elder (1-0) earned the win Monday against the Marlins, allowing eight hits and no walks over 6.2 shutout innings. He struck out four.
Elder stymied the lowly Marlins on Monday night as he scattered eight hits (seven singles and one double), pounding the zone with his 89.5 mph sinker. The 2023 All-Star was pitching well in Triple-A before his call-up, tossing 16.1 innings with a 3.31 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 18:5 K:BB. Should Elder stick in the Atlanta rotation, his next start would come against Cleveland at home.

Tommy Henry SP | ARI
Diamondbacks' Tommy Henry: Drawing spot start Tuesday
Henry will be recalled from Triple-A Reno to start Tuesday's game against the Cardinals, Theo Mackie of The Arizona Republic reports.
The Diamondbacks optioned Henry to Triple-A last Wednesday, so Arizona will have to place a player on the injured list to facilitate the left-hander's return to the 26-man active roster. The southpaw has struggled in his first four appearances of the 2024 campaign, posting a 6.87 ERA and 1.80 WHIP with 18 strikeouts across 18.1 innings, though he'll draw a favorable matchup Tuesday in St. Louis.

Joe Ross RP | TEX
Brewers' Joe Ross: Effective in loss
Ross (1-1) took the loss Monday against Pittsburgh, allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits and one walk over 5.1 innings. He struck out four.
Ross held the Pirates offense in check Monday night, with the only earned run against him coming on a leadoff homer yielded to Andrew McCutchen. With Monday's effort, the 30-year-old right-hander lowered his ERA to 4.05. Ross appears set to continue sticking in the Milwaukee rotation with DL Hall (knee) and Wade Miley (elbow) recently hitting the injured list. Ross is slated to make his next start against the Yankees at home.
