Irvin didn't factor into the decision in Wednesday's 4-3 loss to the Mets, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks over 4.1 innings. He struck out two.

Making his first appearance in the majors since July 29, Irvin didn't necessarily pitch poorly, allowing just a home run to Francisco Lindor in the third inning before New York scraped across a second run in the fifth. Irvin was ultimately removed in the fifth inning after throwing 83 pitches. Overall, the left-hander is 6-5 on the season with a 4.82 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 68:23 K:BB across 99 innings. While Irvin may head back to Triple-A, he will likely be needed again down the stretch as the Orioles deal with numerous injuries in their rotation.

Manager Aaron Boone said Wednesday that Gil's lower-back strain is considered minor, and the Yankees are hopeful that he can return from the 15-day injured list when first eligible Sept. 5, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.

Gil tweaked his back during his start Tuesday against the Guardians and landed on the IL a day later. Boone is optimistic that Gil will be able to continue throwing throughout his stint on the IL, which would improve the right-hander's odds of making it back in the minimum 15 days. Boone added that he foresees Gil returning as a member of the rotation rather than the bullpen.

The Guardians recalled Cantillo from Triple-A Columbus in advance of his start Wednesday against the Yankees.

The lefty will pick up his fourth career MLB start after yielding nine earned runs on 15 hits and six walks while striking out nine over 13 innings across his first three outings with the big club. Following Wednesday's game, Cantillo could stick around with the Guardians to make another start during Monday's doubleheader with the Royals, but he could be optioned back to Triple-A after that if Alex Cobb (fingernail) is able to return from the 15-day injured list later on in the week.

White Sox interim manager Grady Sizemore said Wednesday that Crochet will be on a workload limit in each of his starts for the rest of the season "that will probably slowly decrease as we get closer to the finish line," Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

Crochet hasn't thrown more than four innings in any start since the beginning of July and has a high pitch count of 77 across his last six outings. While the White Sox seemingly aren't planning to completely shut him down at any point, the severely curtailed workload leaves Crochet unusable in most fantasy leagues. Managers in the majority of redraft leagues should feel comfortable cutting the lefty loose, if they haven't already.

The Yankees recalled Warren from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Wednesday.

He's taking the roster spot vacated by Luis Gil (back), who was placed on the 15-day injured list. Warren also seems likely to replace Gil in the rotation, although it's unclear when he might make a start. The rookie right-hander has not pitched since being optioned last Thursday, so he should be available to start at any time. Warren holds an 8.59 ERA and 17:5 K:BB over 14.2 innings covering three starts for the Yankees this season.

The Yankees placed Gil on the 15-day injured list Wednesday with a lower-back strain.

Gil missed most of the past two seasons while recovering from Tommy John surgery, but he had enjoyed good health thus far in 2024 until he was lifted from his start Tuesday against the Guardians due to the back issue. Will Warren was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes Barre in a corresponding move and could step in as the Yankees' new No. 5 starter in place of Gil, who may be a drop candidate in redraft leagues since he won't be eligible to return from the IL until Sept. 5. The Yankees and fantasy managers alike have already gotten far more than they likely expected from Gil, who had generated a 3.30 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 144 strikeouts over 124.2 innings through his first 24 starts of the season.

Manager Bruce Bochy said that Scherzer (shoulder) will make a rehab start with Double-A Frisco on Friday and is on track to return from the 15-day injured list during the Rangers' series versus the White Sox early next week, Shawn McFarland of The Dallas Morning News reports.

On Tuesday, Scherzer threw another bullpen session, which Bochy said went "really well." Provided he gets through Friday's rehab outing without any complications, the veteran right-hander should slot back into the Rangers rotation Wednesday in Chicago. Scherzer has been sidelined for the entirety of August due to right shoulder fatigue but has bounced back nicely since being administered a nerve injection.

The Astros activated Verlander (neck) from the 15-day injured list ahead of his start Wednesday against the Red Sox.

Verlander will rejoin the Houston rotation Wednesday after missing more than two months of action with a neck problem. The 41-year-old threw just 57 pitches in his second of two rehab starts, so he's not yet fully stretched out as he enters a matchup versus Boston. According to Jim Bowden of MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM, manager Joe Espada said that he's expecting Verlander to toss around 75-to-80 pitches Wednesday, so the veteran right-hander could struggle to work deep enough into the start to qualify for a win. Verlander has collected a 3.95 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 51:17 K:BB across 57 innings for the Astros this season.

The Orioles selected Irvin's contract from Triple-A Norfolk on Wednesday, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.

Irvin will draw a spot start Wednesday against the Mets, filling in for the injured Zach Eflin (shoulder). The lefty seems poised to be sent back down to Triple-A after the outing, although it's possible he could change minds if he pitches well. Irvin has posted a 4.06 ERA and 1.34 WHIP through 75.1 frames with the Orioles this season.

Bradford (4-1) took the loss Tuesday, giving up three runs on five hits over seven innings as the Rangers were downed 4-0 by the Pirates. He struck out eight without walking a batter.

The southpaw had only one bad frame -- he served up four hits including a double and a triple in the fourth inning -- but that was one more hit than Texas batters managed on the entire night against Mitch Keller and the Pittsburgh bullpen. Bradford has made seven starts this season and four of them have been quality starts, while Tuesday's eight Ks were a season high. Since returning to the rotation in August, he's produced a 3.74 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 22:3 K:BB in 21.2 innings. Bradford will look to keep rolling in his next outing, which is scheduled to come on the road this weekend in Cleveland.
