  • Padres' JP Sears: Dispatched to Triple-A

The Padres optioned Sears to Triple-A El Paso on Tuesday. Sears will end up losing his spot on the 26-man active roster after the Padres needed to clear room for right-hander Casey Mize, who was acquired from the Tigers on Monday. After being called up from Triple-A on June 23, Sears had started or worked in bulk relief in his first seven appearances for San Diego, logging a 4.26 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 25:10 K:BB in 31.2 innings. The 30-year-old lefty had shifted to a more traditional relief role by the end of the past week, as he gave up two runs in a one-inning appearance in Sunday's 5-4 win over the Giants.

  • Padres' JP Sears: Flourishes as long reliever

Sears (3-3) notched the win Saturday against Miami, allowing no runs on one hit and one walk in 3.1 innings. He struck out three. Pitching behind Randy Vasquez as a bulk reliever, Sears thrived while scattering one single across 3.1 scoreless frames. Saturday disrupted a string of five consecutive starts for the 30-year-old left-hander, whose role with the Padres appears uncertain going forward. Sears, who sports a 3.86 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 23:9 K:BB over 28 innings for San Diego since being recalled from Triple-A El Paso, could maintain some streaming appeal in fantasy leagues if he takes his next scheduled turn in the rotation against the Giants.

  • Padres' JP Sears: Won't start Saturday

Sears is no longer listed as the starting pitcher for Saturday's game against Miami. Randy Vasquez will step in as San Diego's starter, but because he hasn't pitched more than three innings since June 27, Sears may still end up working in bulk relief Saturday. The 30-year-old lefty turned in one of his best outings of the season during his last appearance, allowing two runs (one earned) in five innings against Atlanta on Monday.

  • Padres' JP Sears: Stumbles late in third loss

Sears (2-3) took the loss Monday against Atlanta, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits and no walks in five innings. He struck out three. Sears was cruising along until Atlanta's two-run fifth inning, though one went unearned due to catcher interference by Freddy Fermin. It was still one of Sears' better outings this year, as the 30-year-old southpaw worked at least five innings while yielding one earned run or zero for the second time through five appearances. Sears is set to wrap up a two-start week this weekend in Miami, where he'll bring a 4.38 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 20:8 K:BB over 24.2 innings.

  • Padres' JP Sears: Recalled Tuesday

The Padres recalled Sears from Triple-A El Paso on Tuesday. Assuming he isn't need in relief for Tuesday's game against Atlanta, Sears could draw the start for Wednesday's series finale. Lucas Giolito had been lined up to start or work in bulk relief Wednesday, but he was instead placed on the 15-day injured list due to right elbow inflammation. The 30-year-old Sears has languished over 14 starts with El Paso this season, pitching to a 7.92 ERA and 1.84 WHIP across 63.2 innings.

  • Padres' JP Sears: Headed to El Paso

Sears was optioned to Triple-A El Paso on Sunday. Sears will head to Triple-A after producing an 8.44 ERA and 1.69 WHIP with 10 strikeouts over 10.2 innings in four appearances, including two starts, with the Padres during spring training. The 30-year-old signed a one-year contract with San Diego in January, and he will now have to earn another shot with the major-league roster down the road.

  • Padres' JP Sears: Recalled ahead of start

The Padres recalled Sears from Triple-A El Paso ahead of his scheduled start Sunday versus the Diamondbacks in San Diego. San Diego optioned lefty Kyle Hart to the minors to clear room on the 28-man active roster for Sears. The southpaw isn't expected to be included on the Padres' postseason roster, as he was called up Sunday to afford the other members of the rotation some extra rest in advance of the wild-card series with the Cubs.

  • Padres' JP Sears: Demoted to Triple-A

The Padres optioned Sears to Triple-A El Paso on Tuesday. Three starts into his tenure as a Padre, Sears owns a 5.52 ERA and 1.50 WHIP with an 8:3 K:BB through 14.2 innings. With Michael King (knee) nearing a return from the injured list, Sears will lose his place in the MLB rotation, and the Friars will bring up Alek Jacob from El Paso to provide some extra depth out of the 'pen.

  • Padres' JP Sears: Called up ahead of start

The Padres recalled Sears from Triple-A El Paso ahead of his scheduled start Wednesday against the Giants at Petco Park. Sears was optioned to El Paso after getting tagged for five earned runs in five innings during his team debut Aug. 4 in Arizona following his acquisition at the trade deadline, but he'll get another look as the Padres' No. 5 starter. After Randy Vasquez struggled during a bulk-relief appearance last Friday versus the Dodgers before being sent back to El Paso, Sears will get the next chance to fill the vacancy in the rotation that was created earlier this month when Michael King (knee) landed on the injured list. King is hopeful for a minimum-length stay on the shelf, so Sears may not be guaranteed any starts beyond Wednesday.

  • Padres' JP Sears: Rejoining big-league rotation

Manager Mike Shildt said that Sears will be recalled from Triple-A El Paso to start Wednesday's game against the Giants, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports. The left-hander was demoted Aug. 8 after surrendering five earned runs over five innings in his debut outing with the Padres, but he'll return to the big leagues for another look Wednesday. Prior to that poor appearance, Sears had a 4.95 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 97:29 K:BB across 111 innings with the Athletics this season.

  • Padres' JP Sears: Rough going in San Diego debut

Sears (7-10) allowed five runs on 10 hits and one walk while striking out four over five innings to take the loss versus the Diamondbacks on Monday. Sears' debut for the Padres wasn't pretty, as the Diamondbacks were able to plate at least one run in each of the first four innings. The southpaw has allowed 19 runs (17 earned) across his last five starts (23.1 innings). Overall, he has a 5.12 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 101:30 K:BB through 116 innings across 23 starts between the Athletics and Padres. Sears' first home outing for the Padres is expected to be this weekend against the Red Sox.

  • Padres' JP Sears: Traded to Padres

The Padres acquired Sears and Mason Miller from the Athletics on Thursday in exchange for Leo De Vries and three pitchers, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. Sears has posted a 4.95 ERA and 97:29 K:BB over 111 innings covering 22 starts this season for the Athletics and comes with team control through the 2028 campaign. With Sears supplementing their rotation, the Padres could now be more motivated to trade Dylan Cease to enhance their roster elsewhere.

  • Athletics' JP Sears: Roughed up in second-half debut

Sears (7-8) took the loss after throwing four innings, allowing seven runs (six earned) on six hits and two walks while striking out five, during Friday's 8-6 loss to the Guardians. A four-start streak of going at least five innings concluded Friday for Sears. He allowed just six runs over that stretch, so the seven runs he allowed accounted for more than he gave up over his last four starts combined. It also was the second-most runs he's allowed in one start this season behind the nine he gave up to the Astros on May 27. The 29-year-old will look to prove this was just a one-off and not the start of a pattern during his next start, scheduled to be on the road at the Rangers.

  • Athletics' JP Sears: Goes five innings in no-decision

Sears allowed three runs on four hits and struck out six without walking a batter over five innings in a no-decision versus Atlanta on Thursday. Sears was cruising until the fourth inning, when he allowed all three runs, including a two-run homer to Jurickson Profar. It was the first time Sears has been scored on since June 22 versus the Guardians. The southpaw was denied a third straight win after exiting with the game tied at 3-3, but this was still a decent effort. He's now at a 4.79 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 79:24 K:BB through 97.2 innings over 19 starts this season. He'll likely take the mound versus the Guardians in a road series after the All-Star break.

  • Athletics' JP Sears: Second straight scoreless outing

Sears (7-7) allowed three hits and two walks while striking out six over six scoreless innings to earn the win over the Giants on Friday. Sears has covered 11.2 scoreless innings while allowing five hits and five walks over his last two starts. He kept the Giants' offense under control Friday, and it appears the southpaw is turning a corner after mostly mixed results in May and June. He's now at a 4.76 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 73:24 K:BB through 92.2 innings over 18 starts this season. His next start is projected to be at home versus Atlanta.

  • Athletics' JP Sears: Blanks former club in sixth win

Sears (6-7) picked up the win Saturday, allowing two hits and three walks over 5.2 innings in a 7-0 victory over the Yankees. He struck out four. Facing the team that traded him west back in 2022 as part of the Frankie Montas deal, Sears tossed 48 of 90 pitches for strikes, as he fell one out shy of his first quality start since May 4. Saturday's performance was a much-needed turnaround after he'd gone 1-5 with a 7.90 ERA, 1.66 WHIP and 31:13 K:BB over his prior nine outings and 41 innings, but it may have come too late to save Sears' spot in the A's rotation -- in each of his last two trips to the mound, top prospect Jack Perkins has dazzled in long relief, and the duo may switch roles in the near future. Sears currently lines up to make his next start at home next weekend against the Giants.

  • Athletics' JP Sears: Suffers seventh loss

Sears (5-7) took the loss in Sunday's game against Cleveland. He allowed three runs on seven hits and two walks over five innings with five strikeouts. The 29-year-old southpaw generated a solid 13 whiffs in this 92-pitch outing, as he bounced back after getting shelled by Houston in his last appearance. Sears managed to post his sixth start of the season without conceding a homer out of 16 total games started. Through 81 frames, Sears now sports a 5.44 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 63:19 K:BB while allowing 18 long balls. He currently lines up to make his next start versus his former club, the Yankees, on the road next weekend.

  • Athletics' JP Sears: Strikes out nine in no-decision

Sears allowed two runs on four hits over 5.1 innings in a no-decision Wednesday against the Angels. He struck out nine. Sears was dominant early, allowing just two singles through five scoreless frames. However, he'd give up back-to-back base hits to start the sixth, both of whom would come around to score after the A's turned to the bullpen. After going six or more innings in three of his first four starts this season, Sears has gone seven outings without recording a quality start. Overall, the left-hander has a 5-5 record with a 5.08 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 58:14 K:BB across 14 starts (72.2 innings) this season. Sears is currently lined up to face the Astros at home in his next outing.

  • Athletics' JP Sears: Struggles mightily in fifth loss

Sears (4-5) took the loss Tuesday, allowing nine runs on 10 hits and one walk over 3.1 innings in an 11-1 loss to the Astros. He struck out one. Sears was ambushed by the Astros, surrendering three home runs and failing to make it out of the fourth inning. The left-hander was off to a promising start through his first eight outings, posting a 2.80 ERA and 1.00 WHIP in 45 innings. However, across his past three starts, the 29-year-old owns a 13.86 ERA and 2.27 WHIP in 12.1 innings. With his season numbers now up to a 5.18 ERA and 1.27 WHIP, Sears has been part of the problem for an Athletics rotation that ranks 27th in MLB with a 5.00 team ERA.

  • Athletics' JP Sears: Tagged for grand slam in loss

Sears (4-3) allowed four runs on six hits and three walks while striking out two over four innings to take the loss Friday versus the Giants. Sears was fine through two innings, but he ran into trouble in the third. Wilmer Flores took him deep for a grand slam in that frame to finish a 10-pitch at-bat. The four runs allowed were a season high for Sears, and he's given up six homers over nine starts. The southpaw still has a respectable 3.31 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 38:10 K:BB across 49 innings despite this inefficient start. He's projected for a home start versus the Angels his next time out.
