Raya (shoulder) struck out two and allowed two earned runs on one hit and one walk across one inning in a rehab appearance Saturday with Triple-A St. Paul.
Raya appears to be tracking toward an abbreviated stay on the injured list after the Twins deactivated him July 8 due to a right shoulder impingement. He averaged 94.4 mph with his four-seam fastball Saturday, with that velocity being right on par with his season-long average. According to Dan Hayes of The Athletic, Raya is slated to cover two innings and throw around 35 pitches in his next outing with St. Paul on Tuesday in what could be his final rehab appearance before he gets reinstated.

Though Raya has been a member of the Twins' 40-man roster since the start of last season, Wednesday marks the first big-league call-up for 23-year-old righty. After working as a starter for most of his minor-league career, Raya had made a full-time shift to the bullpen at Triple-A this season and produced a 5.54 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 39:12 K:BB in 39 innings. Raya covered two-plus innings in 13 of his appearances with St. Paul, so he should be available to work as a long man out of the Minnesota bullpen.

Raya, who was moved to the bullpen late last season, will be used as a reliever going forward, Matthew Leach of MLB.com reports. Raya struck out three batters in one inning against the University of Minnesota in an exhibition Friday in his spring debut.
Raya had a 22.6 percent strikeout rate last season at Triple-A, but a 12.6 percent walk rate helped result in a 6.02 ERA. If Raya can reduce his walks at Triple-A, he could be a candidate for the major-league bullpen this summer.

Raya had been slowed early in spring training after suffering a quadricep strain, but he was cleared to make his Grapefruit League debut Saturday against the Red Sox. The 22-year-old right-hander was exceptionally wild in that outing, however, as he failed to record an out and was charged with five earned runs after hitting three batters and walking two others. He's expected to open the season in the rotation at Triple-A St. Paul.

Raya will make the jump to Double-A after he churned out a 2.94 ERA and 0.93 WHIP while striking out 29.5 percent of the batters he faced. A 2020 fourth-round pick, Raya didn't pitch in 2021 due to a shoulder strain and the Twins limited him to 65 innings in 2022. He began the 2023 season on the injured list after experiencing shoulder tightness during spring training, but he returned in early April. It sounds like the Twins are going to be very careful with his workload the rest of the season given the sparse amount of innings he's logged the past three years.

Raya is having his wisdom teeth removed, which is why he is on the 7-day injured list at Low-A Fort Myers, Seth Stohs of Twins Daily reports.
Raya is coming off a dominant start Tuesday, when he struck out 10 and allowed one baserunner in six scoreless innings. According to Geoff Pontes of Baseball America, he was sitting 94-95 mph with his fastball into the sixth inning while commanding an 83-85 mph sweeping slider and also mixing in a 79-81 mph curveball.
