Cortes is scheduled to start Tuesday's game against the Royals, Justin Shackil of WFAN Sports Radio 66 New York reports.

With two starting pitchers (Gerrit Cole and Jordan Montgomery) residing on the COVID-19 injured list and four more (Domingo German, Michael King, Corey Kluber and Luis Severino) on the 10- or 60-day IL, Cortes will get a second straight turn through the rotation out of necessity. The lefty turned in a respectable showing his last time out versus the Mariners on Aug. 5, working five frames while giving up two runs on five hits and three walks.

The Mariners promoted Hancock from High-A Everett to Double-A Arkansas on Monday, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports.

Though the right-hander hasn't recaptured top form since returning from the shoulder issue that prevented him from pitching in the All-Star Futures Game in mid-July, the Mariners were encouraged enough by his recent outings to bump him up to the next level. Over his nine starts at Everett, the 22-year-old Hancock compiled a 2.32 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 30:13 K:BB in 31 innings.

Kluber (shoulder) will make a rehab start at Double-A Somerset on Thursday, Kristie Ackert of the New York Daily News reports.

Kluber has faced live hitters in each of his last two throwing sessions, and he threw 42 pitches in a simulated game Saturday. Although the right-hander felt tired near the end of the simulated game, the team's medical staff still deemed him ready to begin a rehab assignment at the end of the week. Kluber has continued to trend in the right direction since he was placed on the injured list in late May, but he'll likely require several rehab appearances before he's cleared for activation.

Manager Aaron Boone said Monday that German (shoulder) is close to throwing again, Brendan Kuty of The Newark Star-Ledger reports.

German has been shut down since Aug. 1 due to a right rotator cuff strain, but Boone is optimistic that the right-hander will be able to build up his pitch count quickly after he resumes throwing. The 29-year-old recorded a 2.81 ERA, 0.81 WHIP and 20:6 K:BB in 16 innings across his four starts following the All-Star break.

Severino (groin/elbow) will make another rehab start Friday, Brendan Kuty of The Newark Star-Ledger reports.

Severino struck out five in four scoreless innings during Sunday's rehab start, and manager Aaron Boone said the right-hander will use Friday's appearance to build up more. Boone said that the team hasn't ruled out reinstating the 27-year-old from the injured list after Friday's outing.

Ryu didn't factor into the decision Sunday against Boston after allowing seven runs on 10 hits and a walk across 3.2 innings. He struck out one.

Ryu had one of his worst outings of the year Sunday and was happy to escape with the no-decision, as the seven runs allowed represented a season-worst mark for him while also tying season-worst marks in both innings pitches and hits allowed. Ryu now has a 4.14 ERA since the beginning of July. Over that span, he has four excellent starts and three rough outings.

Cease (9-6) won Sunday's 9-3 contest against the Cubs, allowing three runs on five hits and three walks with 10 strikeouts in five innings.

Cease was staked to a five-run lead before he even took the mound and cruised to an easy victory. Seven of the eight total baserunners and all three runs he allowed were surrendered between the second and third innings, but Cease retired the final seven Cubs he faced to finish strong. The 25-year-old's 10 strikeouts come one start after whiffing 11 Royals, and Cease now has 38 strikeouts across 32.2 innings in six second-half starts.

Lyles (5-9) allowed six earned runs on 10 hits and four walks while striking out four across 5.1 innings, taking the loss to the Athletics on Sunday.

Lyles tied his season high with 10 hits allowed Sunday in another mediocre outing. He allowed a solo home run to Seth Brown in the fourth inning. The 30-year-old has a 7.45 ERA over his last 29 innings pitched. On the season, he holds a 5.46 ERA and a 1.48 WHIP with 100 strikeouts in 125.1 innings. His next start is scheduled against the Athletics on Saturday.

Bubic allowed one run on four hits and four walks over 4.2 innings in Sunday's win over St. Louis. He struck out four and did not factor in the decision.

Surprisingly, despite the inefficient outing, the only run to score on Bubic was a leadoff homer by Dylan Carlson to start the game. On the bright side, it was his fifth straight start allowing three or fewer runs, lowering his season ERA to 4.43 through 85.1 frames. The 23-year-old southpaw has just one win over his last nine starts and owns a 3-5 record overall. Bubic is projected to face St. Louis at home next weekend.

Kaprielian (6-4) allowed two earned runs on three hits and two walks while striking out four across six innings, earning the win over the Rangers on Sunday.

Kaprielian allowed Adolis Garcia to score in the first inning after back-to-back doubles. The only other run scored against him was in the sixth inning when Isiah Kiner-Falefa tripled and scored. Kaprielian has been strong of late with the exception of his previous outing against the Padres where he surrendered six runs. The 27-year-old carries a 3.22 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP with 83 strikeouts in 78.1 innings this season.
