  • Michael Kopech SP | LAD

White Sox's Michael Kopech: Officially activated Wednesday

Kopech (knee) was reinstated from the 15-day injured list ahead of Wednesday's start against the Mariners.

Kopech dealt with a knee strain over the last few weeks but threw bullpen sessions Friday and Sunday and has officially been cleared to return following a minimal stay on the injured list. Because Kopech didn't get fully ramped up while he was on the shelf, acting manager Miguel Cairo said the right-hander will likely be limited to around 75-to-80 pitches or five innings in Wednesday's start, per Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times. Over his five starts prior to his absence, Kopech posted a 5.24 ERA and 1.21 WHIP in 22.1 innings.

  • Louie Varland RP | TOR

Twins' Louie Varland: Called up as 29th man

Varland's contract was selected from Triple-A St. Paul to serve as the 29th man for Wednesday's doubleheader against the Yankees.

Varland will make his major-league debut as the starter during Wednesday's matinee against the Yankees after he posted a strong 1.69 ERA and 0.85 WHIP in 21.1 innings over four starts at St. Paul over the last month. If his success translates to the major-league level, it's possible the 24-year-old will be able to secure a role with the Twins over the final month of the regular season.

  • Tyler Wells RP | TB

Orioles' Tyler Wells: Officially activated from IL

The Orioles activated Wells (oblique) from the 15-day injured list ahead of his start Wednesday against the Blue Jays.

Wells will be making his surprise return to the big club Wednesday, despite having made just one rehab start at High-A Aberdeen following a five-week stay on the IL. When he was healthy earlier in the season, Wells was arguably the Orioles' top starting pitcher, as he turned in a 3.90 ERA and 1.11 WHIP in 94.2 innings across his 20 outings. Because he tossed only 31 pitches in his lone rehab start, Wells could be capped at around three or four innings Wednesday, with Dean Kremer potentially piggybacking him out of the bullpen. Wells should gradually get stretched out over his subsequent starts and shouldn't face many workload restrictions by the second half of September.

  • Orioles' Spenser Watkins: Heading to minors

Watkins will be optioned to Triple-A Norfolk on Wednesday, Nathan Ruiz of The Baltimore Sun reports.

Watkins has largely been effective as a starter for the Orioles in the second half, but he'll lose his spot in the rotation after giving up nine runs in 10.2 innings over his last two outings. Tyler Wells (oblique) will be reinstated from the 15-day injured list to start Wednesday's game against Toronto, so Watkins will head to the minors to make room on the Orioles' active roster.

  • Dean Kremer SP | MIN

Orioles' Dean Kremer: Likely available as bulk reliever

Kremer is expected to be available out of the bullpen behind opener Tyler Wells during Wednesday's game against the Blue Jays, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.

Wells will be reinstated from the 15-day injured list to serve as Wednesday's starter, but he's expected to operate in an opener's role to begin the game. As a result, Kremer should have a chance to handle a relatively sizable workload as a reliever during Wednesday's series finale against Toronto.

  • Kyle Bradish SP | BAL

Orioles' Kyle Bradish: Early exit Tuesday

Bradish didn't factor into the decision in Tuesday's 9-6 win over the Blue Jays, giving up three runs on six hits and two walks over three-plus innings. He struck out three.

A two-run homer by Bo Bichette in the third inning accounted for most of the damage, and after Bradish put the first two batters aboard in the fourth, he got the hook. It was the right-hander's shortest outing since late May, but Bradish hasn't been tagged with more than three runs in a start since returning from a shoulder issue after the All-Star break, posting a 3.09 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 41:16 K:BB through 43.2 innings over his last eight trips to the mound.

  • Dean Kremer SP | MIN

Orioles' Dean Kremer: No longer starting Wednesday

Kremer is no longer starting Wednesday's game against the Blue Jays, Nathan Ruiz of The Baltimore Sun reports.

Kremer was initially listed as Wednesday's probable pitcher, but the team will ultimately reinstate Tyler Wells (oblique) from the injured list to start against Toronto. It's not yet clear whether Kremer is dealing with an injury or whether he'll be available to serve as a bulk reliever Wednesday. If he's healthy and doesn't pitch Wednesday, it's possible that he'll draw a start during Baltimore's weekend series against the Red Sox.

  • Tyler Wells RP | TB

    Orioles' Tyler Wells: Starting Wednesday

Wells (oblique) will be reinstated from the 15-day injured list to start Wednesday's game against the Blue Jays, Nathan Ruiz of The Baltimore Sun reports.

Dean Kremer was initially listed as the Orioles' probable starter Wednesday, while Wells was expected to require at least one more rehab appearance prior to rejoining the Orioles. However, Wells will ultimately be activated Wednesday, but it's possible that he serves as an opener since he tossed just 31 pitches during his most recent appearance in the minors. It's not yet clear how the team plans to use Kremer, but it's possible that he's available as a primary pitcher Wednesday.

  • Cole Irvin RP | LAD

Athletics' Cole Irvin: Walloped by Atlanta

Irvin tossed 4.2 innings, surrendering nine runs on nine hits and four walks while striking out four in Tuesday's loss to Atlanta.

Irvin did not have his best stuff again Tuesday, allowing 13 baserunners while ringing up 14 total outs in the start. He gave up three runs in the first frame before Matt Olson busted the game wide open with a three-run blast in the third. Irvin later surrendered three more runs in the top of the fifth, two of which came around to score after he was pulled with two outs. The left-hander is in the middle of rough stretch on the mound, allowing five or more runs in four of his last five outings. The difficult stretch has raised his ERA from 2.92 to much more inflated 3.78 over 152.1 innings in 25 starts this season.

  • Tigers' Eduardo Rodriguez: Quality start in no-decision

Rodriguez tossed seven innings, giving up three runs on five hits while striking out four in Tuesday's extra-inning loss to the Angels. He did not factor into the decision.

Rodriguez gave up three solo homers in the first two innings before pitching five scoreless frames to end his outing. The left-hander was taken off the hook for a loss when the Tigers scored a run in the top of the eighth, evening the score at 3-3. He has now produced strong efforts in three of his four starts since returning to the team Aug. 19 after an extended absence due to a personal matter, producing a 3.69 ERA over 22 innings. Rodriguez now owns a 4.13 ERA and 1.33 WHIP with 50 strikeouts over 61 frames in 12 outings this season.
