German was scratched from his start Monday against the Rays due to discomfort in his right armpit, but manager Aaron Boone said that he doesn't expect the 30-year-old to land on the 15-day injured list, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.

German first experienced the discomfort Sunday and was unable to play catch, prompting the Yankees to call up Jhony Brito from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on short notice to make a spot start. The Yankees will have German visit with a doctor later Monday, and that meeting should help shed light on whether the right-hander will be able to make his next turn through the rotation. German is tentatively lined up to start Saturday versus the Astros at Yankee Stadium.

Bielak was optioned to Triple-A Sugar Land on Monday, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.

With Jose Urquidy (shoulder) rejoining Houston's rotation later this week, Bielak was sent to the minors to allow the Astros to bolster the bullpen in the short term. Bielak had a 2.63 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and a 22:15 K:BB in 27.1 innings over his last five starts.

German has been scratched from his scheduled start Monday against the Rays due to an unspecified "physical issue," Greg Joyce of the New York Post reports.

The Yankees called up right-hander Jhony Brito from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to get the start Monday, but the team didn't place German on the 15-day injured list in a corresponding move. For now, German can be viewed as day-to-day until the Yankees provide updated information on both the nature and extent of his rotation. With Nestor Cortes (shoulder) on pace to return from the 60-day IL early next week, German already looked to be at risk of losing his spot in the rotation even before he was scratched from Monday's start. Since throwing a perfect game June 28 in Oakland, German has turned in a 5.64 ERA and 1.25 WHIP over his subsequent four starts.

Brito will start Monday's game against the Rays, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports.

Domingo German was scratched with an undisclosed physical issue, so Brito was recalled to make the spot start. Brito has been solid if unspectacular over his last five big-league starts, logging a 3.24 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 16 strikeouts over 25 innings. He most recently struck out three and gave up three runs over five innings for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on July 25.

Ron Marinaccio was optioned to Triple-A in a corresponding move, as Brito presumably takes on a long-relief role for New York in the short term. Luis Severino has really struggled lately, giving up 27 earned runs in 21.2 innings over his last five starts, but there has not been any word of him getting removed from the rotation.

The Rays acquired Civale from the Guardians on Monday in exchange for first baseman Kyle Manzardo (undisclosed), Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.

Tampa Bay will surrender one of its top position prospects in Manzardo to bolster its injury-laden rotation with the addition of Civale, who is under club control through 2025 and has quietly performed as a frontline starter since making his return from the 15-day injured list June 2. Over his final 11 starts with Cleveland, Civale submitted a 2.24 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 50:20 K:BB in 64.1 innings. Though most of Civale's underlying numbers this season (3.67 xERA, 3.55 FIP) suggest that he's pitching over his head, his stellar control and command have long helped him make up for a lack of swing-and-miss stuff. He made his last start with Cleveland on Sunday, so he's unlikely to make his Rays debut until this weekend's series in Detroit.

Urquidy (shoulder) covered five innings and allowed five runs on nine hits and no walks while striking out three in his rehab start Sunday for Triple-A Sugar Land.

The Astros probably wanted to see a stronger showing from Urquidy in what was likely his fourth and final rehab start at Sugar Land, but there were some silver linings from the outing. Only one of the nine hits he allowed went for extra bases, and the right-hander was able to build up his pitch count to 76 while consistently throwing strikes throughout the day. Assuming he experiences no setbacks with his shoulder coming out of a bullpen session in the next day or two, Urquidy should be cleared to return from the 60-day injured list to make his first start for Houston since April 30. He tentatively lines up for a return to the big-league rotation this weekend on the road versus the Yankees.

Turnbull (neck) made his second rehab start Sunday for High-A West Michigan, covering three innings and allowing two runs on two hits and no walks while striking out four.

After tossing two scoreless frames for West Michigan in his first rehab start last Tuesday, Turnbull worked a little longer Sunday and was mostly effective during the 34-pitch outing, with a two-run first-inning home run representing the only damage against him. Expect the Tigers to transfer Turnbull's rehab assignment to Double-A Erie or Triple-A Toledo later this week as he continues to get stretched back out following a lengthy layoff due to a neck injury. The Tigers wouldn't appear to have room in the rotation for Turnbull at the moment, but that could change quickly if Detroit moves Eduardo Rodriguez and/or Michael Lorenzen ahead of Tuesday's trade deadline.

Bielak (5-6) took the loss Sunday, allowing six runs (three earned) on eight hits and three walks over five innings against the Rays. He struck out four.

After being tagged for six runs (three earned) in his last start, Bielak surrendered six more against the Rays on Sunday. He struggled with control once again, allowing three or more walks for the fifth time in his last six starts, and now owns an ugly 59:33 K:BB through 74.2 innings (14 appearances). With Jose Urquidy (shoulder) set to return to the Astros rotation this week, Bielak will likely be the odd man out and retreat to the bullpen.

Maeda (2-6) was hit with the loss Sunday against the Royals after allowing two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out seven in five innings.

Maeda put together another solid outing and has now registered at least seven strikeouts in four of his last five starts. He wound up with the loss after the Twins managed just one run and let in runs of his own on a homer in the second and a pair of hits in the third. Maeda has had the fortune of facing some of the league's weaker offenses over the last month, but he's certainly provided mixed-league value and will look to get back in the win column (he hasn't won since July 4) in a home start against the Diamondbacks next weekend.
