  • Cubs' Keegan Thompson: Hit hard in loss

Thompson (8-5) allowed five runs on 10 hits across 4.2 innings to take the loss Tuesday against the Cardinals. He walked two and struck out one.

Thompson allowed home runs to Dylan Carlson and Paul Goldschmidt, and was just generally ineffective on the road against St. Louis. The righty has now alternated good and bad starts his last four times out, though he's been mostly solid for the bulk of the year, as evidenced by his 3.48 ERA across 93 innings. He'll look to get back on track in his next scheduled outing Sunday against the Marlins.

  • Jordan Romano RP | COL

Blue Jays' Jordan Romano: Picks up 25th save

Romano earned the save Tuesday in Tampa Bay, allowing a solo homer and striking out one in the ninth inning of a 3-1 victory.

Taylor Walls took Romano deep to lead off the ninth, but the 29-year-old bounced back and retired the next three batters on five pitches. He is now 25-for-28 in save chances and has converted his last eight opportunities. Over his last 13 appearances, he's posted a 1.32 ERA, 0.66 WHIP and 15:3 K:BB in 13.2 innings.

  • Tayler Scott RP | ATL

Padres' Tayler Scott: Rejoins big-league club

Scott was recalled from Triple-A El Paso ahead of Game 2 of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Rockies.

Scott will rejoin the Friars on Tuesday after spending the past couple weeks in the minors. The 30-year-old appeared in four MLB games in July and gave up five earned runs on 11 hits with a 10:4 K:BB across 6.2 frames.

  • Dillon Tate RP | TOR

Orioles' Dillon Tate: Could see saves

Manager Brandon Hyde named Tate, Felix Bautista and Cionel Perez as the likely candidates to see save opportunities after the Orioles traded Jorge Lopez to the Twins on Tuesday, Nathan Ruiz of The Baltimore Sun reports.

Tate has two saves and 12 holds as a setup man for Baltimore this year, and he also has a 2.22 ERA and 1.01 WHIP across 48.2 innings. It's unclear exactly how Hyde's matchups-based approach will shake out, though it limits the value of all three pitchers for fantasy managers, at least until one player separates from the pack.

  • Cionel Perez RP | NYM

Orioles' Cionel Perez: In mix to close

Manager Brandon Hyde named Perez, Felix Bautista and Dillon Tate as the candidates to serve as Baltimore's closer after Jorge Lopez was traded to Minnesota, Nathan Ruiz of The Baltimore Sun reports.

The three have operated as setup men for the Orioles this year, and the group will now be in a closing committee with Hyde utilizing a matchups-based approach. Perez has one save and 15 holds with a 1.25 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 34:15 K:BB across 36 innings this season. Bautista seems like the best option to head the committee, but it remains to be seen exactly how the group's usage breaks down with Lopez out of the picture.

  • Felix Bautista RP | BAL

Orioles' Felix Bautista: In closing committee

Manager Brandon Hyde named Bautista, Cionel Perez and Dillon Tate as the candidates to closer for Baltimore after Jorge Lopez was traded to the Twins on Tuesday, Nathan Ruiz of The Baltimore Sun reports.

Bautista was the presumptive closer for the Orioles in the immediate aftermath of the trade, but it sounds like Hyde will employ a matchups-based approach for the ninth inning. The right-hander has three saves and 13 holds to go with a 1.66 ERA, 0.88 WHIP and 34.4 percent strikeout rate in his first taste of big-league action this year, so he's the logical candidate to head Baltimore's committee, though that doesn't necessarily mean he'll receive the bulk of the save chances.

  • Anthony Bender RP | MIA

Marlins' Anthony Bender: Returns from injured list

Bender (back) was reinstated from the 60-day injured list Tuesday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.

Bender had been out since mid-May, but he's ready to after four scoreless, hitless rehab appearances. Prior to his absence, he'd recorded a mediocre 4.50 ERA in 14 innings of work but had recorded six saves. It's unlikely he'll unseat current closer Tanner Scott right away.

  • Michael Rucker RP | SEA

Cubs' Michael Rucker: Recalled from Triple-A

Rucker was recalled from Triple-A Iowa on Tuesday.

After spending a month with Iowa, Rucker will return to Chicago for another stint with the big club. He figures to work in middle-to-long relief like he did last time he was in town.

  • Joe Kelly RP | LAD

White Sox's Joe Kelly: Overcomes biceps injury

Kelly (biceps) picked up a hold and struck out one over a scoreless inning in Sunday's 4-1 win over the Athletics.

Kelly had been removed from his previous appearance last Wednesday against the Rockies after experiencing right biceps discomfort, but he only needed a couple days of rest to avoid a trip to the injured list. The hold was his 11th of the season, tying Jose Ruiz for second on the team behind Kendall Graveman.

  • Taylor Hearn RP | KC

Rangers' Taylor Hearn: Rejoins big club

Hearn was recalled from Triple-A Round Rock on Tuesday, Joseph Hoyt of The Dallas Morning News reports.

Hearn was demoted last week but will rejoin the Rangers on Tuesday with Jon Gray (oblique) headed to the injured list. Hearn will remain in the bullpen despite the open rotation spot, as he's pitched well in relief over his last three outings with a 1.59 ERA and 1.15 WHIP across 11.1 innings.
