  • Jose Ferrer RP | WAS

Nationals' Jose Ferrer: Passed over in save opportunity

Ferrer earned a hold during Thursday's 3-2 win over Philadelphia, allowing one hit with one strikeout during a scoreless inning.

Ferrer handled ninth-inning duties Aug. 9 in Washington's first save opportunity after trading closer Kyle Finnegan, but Ferrer was passed over Thursday in favor of Cole Henry. Instead, Ferrer worked in a setup role, pitching a scoreless eighth frame before Henry earned the save with a scoreless ninth. The Nationals could use a matchup-based approach to the closer role for the final weeks of the season between the lefty Ferrer and the righty Henry, but save chances are likely to come at a premium for the rebuilding club. Ferrer has allowed two runs on nine hits in six innings during August.

  • Brad Lord RP | WAS

Nationals' Brad Lord: Limits damage in no-decision

Lord didn't factor into the decision Thursday against Philadelphia, allowing two runs on seven hits and one walk across six innings. He struck out three.

Lord's seven hits allowed were a season worst, but he was able to navigate the trouble and give up just two runs. He's been impressive since hopping into the rotation following the All-Star break, posting a 2.77 ERA and a 17:6 K:BB across 26 innings. Lord is fully stretched out, and he's completed six innings in back-to-back appearances. He'll look to extend that streak in his next start, which is scheduled to come against the Mets.

  • Rafael Montero RP | DET

Tigers' Rafael Montero: Records first win of season

Montero (1-1) worked 1.1 scoreless innings of relief to earn the win in Thursday's 4-3, 11-inning victory over the Twins. He struck out two.

Montero was needed to record the final four outs of the game, as Kyle Finnegan pitched earlier in the contest and Will Vest wasn't used after recording a save Wednesday. While Montero has pitched better his last two appearances after a rough debut with the Tigers, the veteran righty is still hard to trust with a 5.52 ERA and 1.39 WHIP in 43 outings on the season. He'll continue to work in a middle-relief role, with Finnegan and Vest seeing the bulk of Detroit's late-inning work.

  • Cade Smith RP | CLE

Guardians' Cade Smith: Up to six saves

Smith recorded the final out Thursday to earn the save in a 9-4 win over the Marlins.

After Nic Enright loaded the bases in the ninth inning, Smith came on to record the final out and lock down his sixth save of the season. The 26-year-old Smith has been impressive since taking over the closing job in Cleveland. He's held opponents scoreless in his last eight appearances (nine innings) to lower his ERA to 2.67 with a 1.09 WHIP and 74 strikeouts across 54 innings this season.

  • Dietrich Enns RP | BAL

Orioles' Dietrich Enns: Locks down first save

Enns earned the save in Thursday's 5-3 win over the Mariners, allowing a run on two hits and a walk in the ninth inning.

Enns' first save since 2021 didn't come easy -- after giving up back-to-back singles to open the frame, the left-hander managed to hold Seattle to just one run to close out the Orioles' victory. Enns has pitched well overall since joining Baltimore at the trade deadline, allowing two runs while striking out 12 over 6.1 innings to put his name in the late-inning mix.

  • Jeff Hoffman RP | TOR

Blue Jays' Jeff Hoffman: Locks down 27th save

Hoffman earned the save in Thursday's 2-1 win over the Cubs, allowing a hit while striking out three in the ninth inning.

Hoffman worked around Nico Hoerner's one-out single, striking out the final two batters he faced, to earn his 27th save this season. After issuing five walks in just two-thirds of an inning during his last save chance, Hoffman has responded with back-to-back scoreless appearances, allowing just one hit over 1.2 innings. His ERA sits at 4.32 through 50 innings this season with a 1.10 WHIP and 69:16 K:BB.

  • Jacob Webb RP | TEX

Rangers' Jacob Webb: Beginning rehab assignment

Webb (back) will begin a rehab assignment at Triple-A Round Rock on Thursday.

Webb landed on the IL at the end of July due to back spasms but is now entering the home stretch of his recovery. The 31-year-old shouldn't require too many rehab outings before being cleared to return to his middle-relief role for Texas, where he owns a 3.75 ERA and 1.13 WHIP through 48 innings.

  • Tigers' Sawyer Gipson-Long: Sent to Triple-A

The Tigers optioned Gipson-Long to Triple-A Toledo on Thursday, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports.

Gipson-Long tossed two shutout innings out of the bullpen Wednesday, but he'll lose his spot on the active roster while the Tigers bring in a fresh arm in the form of Bailey Horn. Gipson-Long now owns a 4.32 ERA through 25 innings in the majors and could return to Detroit down the stretch for a spot start or to provide more length out of the bullpen.

  • Bailey Horn RP | DET

Tigers' Bailey Horn: Recalled from Triple-A

The Tigers recalled Horn from Triple-A Toledo on Thursday, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports.

Since his last MLB appearance July 6, Horn allowed three runs (one earned) over 10 innings while striking out 12 batters and walking three with Toledo. He'll now be called upon to provide Detroit with a fresh bullpen arm to replace Sawyer Gipson-Long, who was optioned to Toledo in a corresponding move. Horn will presumably pitch in middle relief while with the Tigers.

  • Angels' Robert Stephenson: Beginning assignment

Stephenson (biceps) will begin a rehab assignment at Triple-A Salt Lake on Thursday.

Biceps inflammation has kept Stephenson on the shelf since the end of May, and after two-plus months of rehab, the 32-year-old righty has now been cleared to pitch in a competitive environment. Given the duration of his stay on the injured list, he will likely require several tune-up outings before being cleared to join the Angels' bullpen, but a return to Anaheim before the end of the month remains in play.
