Rockies pitcher Drew Pomeranz made his first appearance in two months Monday night at home against the Cardinals. Pomeranz pitched the sixth inning for Colorado.

Pomeranz, who has battled a biceps injury and forearm tightness, returned with a scoreless inning with one hit allowed and a strikeout. He needed 13 pitches and his ERA on the year is at 7.64.

The Brewers continue to consider giving top pitching prospect Jimmy Nelson a start before the end of the season, MLB.com reports Monday. That said, manager Ron Roenicke declined to give any kind of date.

Milwaukee already is using a six-man rotation at the moment. Nelson would likely fit into the rotation during the season's final road trip against the Braves or Mets. 

"He’s an aggressive guy, and that makes a difference," Roenicke said. "Maybe he’ll be wild, I don’t know. But he’s going to come at you and he’s going to give you his best stuff. Those are the kind of guys you want to see, so if we can get him in there, we want to see him."

Rockies pitcher Collin McHugh will take the ball for a spot start Monday against St. Louis, the Denver Post reports. McHugh has a brutal 10.50 ERA and 2.08 WHIP in four games for the Rockies.

Cardinals pitcher Shelby Miller moved to 14-9 Sunday, giving up two runs (one earned) on three hits and two walks while striking out one in five innings in his team's 11-2 win over the Mariners.

Miller has surrendered three earned runs or less in all but one of his 13 starts since the beginning of July. He takes a 3.01 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 162:52 K:BB ratio into Friday's start against the Brewers.

Pirates closer Mark Melancon pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning in Sunday's 3-2 win over the Cubs to earn his 16th save, striking out one in the performance.

Melancon has surrendered just eight earned runs all season en route to a 1.07 ERA, 0.88 WHIP and 66:8 K:BB ratio in 67 1/3 innings. He's 7 for 7 in save opportunities in September.

Rockies pitcher Collin McHugh is expected to be the starter for Monday's game against the Cardinals, the Denver Post reports. Jorge De La Rosa was originally scheduled to start Monday's game before being sctratched with inflammation in his thumb.

McHugh has pitched 12 innings between the Rockies and Mets, giving up 14 earned runs while striking out five and walking four.

Braves closer Craig Kimbrel set a new career high with his 47th save of the season Saturday night against the Padres. The right-hander endured a shaky outing as he surrendered a solo home run to Chase Headley. He allowed one run on one hit and one walk while striking out two over one inning of work, preserving a 2-1 victory.

Kimbrel is 47 of 50 in save opportunities, with a 1.04 ERA and a 0.86 WHIP.

Pirates closer Mark Melancon converted his 15th save of the season Saturday night against the Cubs. The right-hander made quick work as he struck out one needed only eight pitches to preserve a 2-1 victory.

Melancon is 15 of 17 in save opportunities with a 1.09 ERA and a 0.89 WHIP.

Mets starting pitcher Carlos Torres took the loss Saturday against the Marlins, despite twirling a quality start in a 3-0 loss.

Torres limited the Marlins to just two runs in his six innings of work, but had to settle for the loss due to his offense's struggles. Torres allowed just three hits and two walks while striking out a career-high eight batters. He threw 63 of 111 pitches for strikes.

Despite the solid outing, Torres' record fell to 3-5. He lowered his ERA to 3.48, heading into his next start, which has not yet been scheduled.

Reds closer Aroldis Chapman recorded a four-out save Saturday at Milwaukee. Chapman walked two batters but got the final four outs of the game all via the strikeout for his 36th save. 

Chapman needed 28 pitches to strike out four batters and earn the save. His ERA is at 2.56 on the season. 

The 25-year-old has at least one strikeout in eight straight appearances with 19 total over that span of 9 1/3 innings. He has gone 36 for 41 in save situations this year.
