Yuki Matsui RP | SD
Padres' Yuki Matsui: Mops up for first save
Matsui walked one and struck out one over one-third of a hitless and scoreless inning to earn the save in Thursday's 5-3 win over the Dodgers.
Sean Reynolds and Robert Suarez both struggled earlier in the ninth inning, and Matsui wasn't much better. He allowed an inherited runner to score on a wild pitch, but Matsui struck out Dalton Rushing to squash the Dodgers' late rally. This was Matsui's first save of the season -- Suarez has been locked in as the Padres' closer, though he's now been scored upon in three straight appearances. Overall, Matsui is at a 3.00 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 35:15 K:BB over 30 innings. He's added just two holds and isn't a regular part of the late-inning mix, as the Padres have plenty of other options to close if Suarez loses the job or becomes part of a committee. Don't expect to see many other save opportunities for Matsui this season.

Ryan Bergert P | KC
Padres' Ryan Bergert: Steady in short outing
Bergert allowed three hits and a walk while striking out three over 4.2 scoreless innings in a no-decision versus the Dodgers on Thursday.
Bergert came up an out short of qualifying for the win, exiting at 71 pitches (47 strikes). It appears to be simply a managerial decision, as Shohei Ohtani was up with runners on the corners and two outs when Bergert was lifted for Adrian Morejon. While it was a short start, Bergert's holding his own quite well in the majors, allowing just five runs over 20 innings across his first four starts. He's at a 1.88 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 19:9 K:BB through 24 innings over eight appearances in total this season. The 25-year-old is projected to make his next start at home versus the Nationals.

Orion Kerkering RP | PHI
Phillies' Orion Kerkering: Shuts door for second save
Kerkering picked up the save after allowing one hit with no strikeouts during a scoreless ninth inning in Thursday's 2-1 win over Miami.
It was the second save of the season for Kerkering, who certainly appears to have worked his way into Philadelphia's ninth-inning mix. Each of his two saves for the year have come in his past three outings, and the right-hander is now riding a streak of 16.1 consecutive innings without yielding an earned run. The Phillies seem to be intent on having a committee at closer perhaps until one of Kerkering, Matt Strahm or Jordan Romano emerges from the high-leverage pack, as it's worth noting Strahm also has two saves in his last three appearances.

Jose Ruiz RP | TEX
Braves' Jose Ruiz: Loses roster spot
Ruiz was designated for assignment by Atlanta on Thursday, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports.
Ruiz was claimed off waivers by Atlanta on June 7 and made two appearances for the team, allowing three earned runs across two frames. He's bounced around big-league rosters in recent seasons, so he may be claimed off waivers.

Andre Granillo P | WAS
Cardinals' Andre Granillo: Earns first career save
Granillo earned the save in Game 2 of Thursday's doubleheader against the White Sox, allowing one walk and striking out one in a scoreless 10th inning to secure the extra-inning win.
With Ryan Helsley closing out Game 1, Granillo was called upon to protect a two-run lead and delivered in his first career save chance. In four appearances since debuting June 12, the 25-year-old has thrown five scoreless innings while allowing only three baserunners.

Seth Halvorsen P | COL
Rockies' Seth Halvorsen: Can't convert save chance
Halvorsen (1-2) blew the save and took the loss in Thursday's 4-3 extra-innings loss to Washington, allowing two runs (one earned) on one hit over two-thirds of an inning.
Halvorsen broke a streak of four consecutive scoreless appearances, surrendering a walk-off, two-run homer to James Wood in the bottom of the 11th frame. The outing marked his third blown save of the campaign. In 30.1 innings this season, Halvorsen has a 4.45 ERA and 28:14 K:BB with five saves.

Jack Little P | DET
Dodgers' Jack Little: Has contract selected
Little had his contract selected by the Dodgers on Thursday.
Little progressed to Triple-A Oklahoma City in 2024 and began 2025 at the level, maintaining a 2.20 ERA and 1.18 WHIP with a 33:14 K:BB across 32.2 frames. Little now has the chance to make his big-league debut and will likely serve as bullpen depth.

Ryne Nelson SP | ARI
Diamondbacks' Ryne Nelson: Limits Jays to one run
Nelson (4-2) earned the win against the Blue Jays on Thursday, allowing one run on one hit and two walks while striking out four across 5.2 innings.
Nelson faced the minimum number of batters in four of the six innings he pitched, with the lone blemish coming in the second inning when he yielded a solo home run to Alejandro Kirk. Nelson has allowed one earned run or less in five of six starts this season and has seemingly entrenched himself in the Diamondbacks' rotation following the loss of Corbin Burnes (elbow). Nelson is lined up to face the White Sox on the road next week.

Camilo Doval RP | NYY
Giants' Camilo Doval: Slams door for save No. 11
Doval picked up the save in Thursday's 2-1 win over the Guardians, fanning one during a clean ninth inning.
Doval is now up to 11 saves for the season, and he continues to be effective as San Francisco's closer. Since officially being named the club's stopper by manager Bob Melvin on May 28, Doval has converted six of his seven save opportunities and has posted a 2.53 ERA with 13 strikeouts over his last 10.2 innings. However, the hard-throwing right-hander does have a shaky 1.69 WHIP during that period, so he has some control issues to iron out.

Trevor Megill RP | MIL
Brewers' Trevor Megill: Secures 16th save
Megill earned the save in Thursday' 8-7 win over the Cubs, allowing one walk with one strikeout in a scoreless ninth inning.
Megill was summoned to protect a one-run lead in the ninth and worked around a leadoff walk to close things out on 16 pitches. The 31-year-old has now converted nine saves in his past 10 appearances, with the lone exception being a blown save June 7. On the season, he's 16-for-18 in save chances with a 2.84 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 30:13 K:BB across 25.1 innings.
