Padres' Mark Melancon: Slams door for fifth save

Melancon struck out one batter in a perfect ninth inning to earn a save in Sunday's 2-0 win over the Rangers.

Melancon has been absolutely lights-out to start the season, allowing just one hit through six shutout innings while racking up five saves. He has a very tight grasp on the Padres' closer role and will see the vast majority of opportunities.

  • JoJo Romero RP | STL

    Phillies' JoJo Romero: Receives call-up

The Phillies recalled Romero from Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Sunday.

Romero will provide the Phillies with another fresh arm out of the bullpen after Archie Bradley (oblique) was placed on the injured list in a corresponding move. Over his 12 appearances out of the Philadelphia bullpen as a rookie in 2020, Romero gave up nine earned runs on 13 hits and two walks in 10.2 innings.

  • Padres' Adrian Morejon: Sustains forearm strain

The Padres diagnosed Morejon with a left elbow/forearm strain after he was removed in the first inning of his start Sunday against the Rangers.

Morejon will be re-evaluated Monday before the Padres gain a better sense of how long the lefty will be sidelined, but a trip to the 10-day injured list is almost certainly on tap even if follow-up tests reveal no ligament damage. Fortunately for San Diego, the team should have some reinforcement for the rotation waiting in the wings, as Dinelson Lamet (elbow) looks like he could be ready to return from the IL after a successful throwing session earlier this weekend, per Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune. If Lamet isn't ready to pitch when Morejon's next turn in the rotation comes up Friday against the Dodgers, the Padres could turn to one of Ryan Weathers or Nabil Crismatt for a spot start, or deploy the two long relievers in a tandem.

  • Dodgers' Brusdar Graterol: Nearing return from IL

Manager Dave Roberts suggested Sunday that Graterol (conditioning) could be activated from the 10-day injured list by next weekend, Eric Stephen of SBNation.com reports.

Rather than because of an injury, Graterol began the season on the IL after a bout with COVID-19 earlier this year kept him behind the Dodgers' other pitchers this spring from a conditioning standpoint. Graterol appears to have avoided any snags in the build-up process over the past couple of weeks, and his 2021 debut should be imminent. Roberts said Graterol will likely pitch in simulated games at the Dodgers' alternate site in two of the next three days, and if all goes well, he could join the team for a much-anticipated series in San Diego next weekend.

  • John Curtiss RP | ARI

Marlins' John Curtiss: Sunday's game suspended

Curtiss didn't throw a pitch Sunday against the Mets before the game was suspended due to inclement weather, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.

The 28-year-old was serving as an opener Sunday for the Mets, but the teams were called off the field due to rain with one out in the top of the first inning. Curtiss should return to his bullpen role when the Marlins resume the schedule Monday in Atlanta.

  • Cardinals' Genesis Cabrera: Mostly effective early

Cabrera has posted a 3.86 ERA, 3:3 K:BB and two holds across 4.2 innings covering his first four appearances.

The talented but control-challenged left-hander had one hiccup against the Reds last Sunday, when he gave up two earned runs on two hits and a walk over one inning. However, Cabrera has posted a combined 3.2 scoreless frames over his other three trips to the mound, and he's encouragingly stayed away from issuing any walks to the nine batters he's faced across his last two appearances.

  • Padres' Adrian Morejon: Exits start, apparent arm injury

Morejon was removed in the first inning of his start Sunday against the Rangers with an apparent elbow/forearm injury, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

Morejon retired the first two batters he faced before he was visited on the mound by a team trainer following a four-pitch walk to Joey Gallo. The trainer was spotted holding Morejon's elbow during the mound visit, but the nature and extent of his injury likely won't be known until he's evaluated in the clubhouse. Even if an injury hadn't knocked Morejon out of Sunday's game, the lefty likely wouldn't have been in line for an extended run in San Diego's rotation with Dinelson Lamet (elbow) potentially on track to return from the 10-day injured list during the upcoming week.

  • Daniel Castano RP | MIA

Marlins' Daniel Castano: Recalled from alternate site

Castano was recalled from the Marlins' alternate training site Sunday.

The 26-year-old didn't make Miami's Opening Day roster but will join the big-league club to close the second weekend of the season. Castano made his major-league debut last season and had a 3.03 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 12:11 K:BB over 29.2 innings for the Marlins. He could be an option to serve as a bulk reliever behind opener John Curtiss in Sunday's game against the Mets.

  • Brewers' J.P. Feyereisen: Off to strong start

Feyereisen tossed a scoreless inning of relief in Saturday's victory over the Cardinals. He struck out two batters and did not allow a baserunner.

Feyereisen gave up an unearned run on a hit and two walks in the fourth of his five appearances out of the Brewers' bullpen, but he allowed one walk and nothing else in his other four outings to date. Feyereisen is not working in a fantasy-friendly role, but he has solidified his hold on a roster spot.

  • John Curtiss RP | ARI

    Marlins' John Curtiss: Opening Sunday

Curtis will serve as an opener Sunday against the Mets, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.

The 27-year-old is expected to cover two or three innings for the Marlins as inclement weather could affect the start of Sunday's contest. It's unclear if manager Don Mattingly plans to utilize a bulk reliever or go with a more traditional bullpen game after Curtiss.
