  • Alex Young RP | CIN

Diamondbacks' Alex Young: Cast off 40-man roster

The Diamondbacks designated Young for assignment Wednesday.

Arizona booted Young from its 40-man roster to make room for reliever Ty Tice, who was claimed off waivers from Atlanta. Young turned in some decent numbers over 15 starts with the Diamondbacks as a rookie in 2019, but he's been ineffective while working out of the rotation or in relief across the past two seasons. Dating back to the start of the 2020 season, Young has posted a 5.83 ERA and 1.53 WHIP over 88 innings.

  • J.B. Bukauskas RP | MIL

Diamondbacks' J.B. Bukauskas: Optioned to Triple-A

Bukauskas was optioned to Triple-A Reno on Wednesday.

Bukauskas earned his second win of the season Tuesday by striking out two in a perfect inning against the Pirates, but he'll now head back to the minors after strong performances in each of his last two innings. Although the right-hander has a 7.98 ERA and 1.84 WHIP in 14.2 innings across 18 appearances in the big leagues this year, he could rejoin Arizona's bullpen at some point if he performs well at Triple-A Reno.

  • Sam Howard RP | DET

Pirates' Sam Howard: Resumes playing catch

Howard (oblique) recently resumed playing catch, Kevin Gorman of TribLive.com reports.

Howard has been on the 10-day injured list for just over a week due to a right oblique strain. A better timetable for the southpaw's return could be revealed once he's able to resume mound work, but it appears as though he could spend more than the minimum of 10 days on the IL.

  • Brad Boxberger RP | CHC

Brewers' Brad Boxberger: Should be available Wednesday

Boxberger (shoulder) is expected to be available out of the bullpen for Wednesday's game against the Royals after he checked out fine following a throwing session Tuesday, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports.

The Brewers have stayed away from Boxberger for their past two games while he's dealt with a stiff right shoulder, but his ability to throw Tuesday without discomfort seemingly clears up any threat of him landing on the injured list. With 12 holds and three saves to go with a 3.03 ERA and 1.14 WHIP over 42 appearances this season, Boxberger has become a trusted late-inning arm for manager Craig Counsell.

  • Geoff Hartlieb RP | ATH

Mets' Geoff Hartlieb: Returns to Triple-A

The Mets optioned Hartlieb to Triple-A Syracuse on Wednesday, Deesha Thosar of the New York Daily News reports.

Hartlieb's demotion clears a spot on the active roster for a fresh bullpen arm in right-hander Nick Tropeano, who was recalled from Triple-A in a corresponding move. After the Mets claimed him off waivers from the Pirates on July 8, Hartlieb was called up to the big club a couple days later and made four relief appearances. He gave up two earned runs on three hits and three walks over four innings.

  • Max Kranick RP | WAS

Pirates' Max Kranick: Locked in for start Wednesday

Kranick is slated to start Wednesday's game against the Diamondbacks, Jake Crouse of MLB.com reports.

After being called up from Triple-A Indianapolis on Tuesday, Kranick wasn't needed out of the bullpen in that night's 11-6 loss, so he'll get the ball for the series finale. Kranick, who owns a 3.38 ERA and 0.88 WHIP across two short starts for Pittsburgh this season, will step into the rotation as a replacement for Chase De Jong (knee), who was placed on the injured list Tuesday.

  • Spencer Howard SP | CLE

Phillies' Spencer Howard: Recalled by Phillies

Howard was recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Wednesday.

Howard had been stretching out as a starter in the minors since the end of June, but he'll be available to provide length out of the bullpen in Wednesday's series finale against the Yankees. The right-hander threw three innings during his most recent appearance Saturday, so he should be able to provide multiple innings if needed. Outfielder Mickey Moniak was optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley in a corresponding move.

  • Jeff Hoffman RP | TOR

Reds' Jeff Hoffman: Reinstated prior to start

Hoffman (shoulder) was reinstated from the 10-day injured list ahead of Wednesday's start against the Mets.

Hoffman had been on the injured list since late May due to a right shoulder impingement, but he made four rehab starts at Triple-A Louisville prior to his activation. He most recently pitched July 7, when he tossed 82 pitches across 5.1 innings during his rehab outing. Manager David Bell said that the Reds will consider using a six-man rotation going forward, but it's not yet clear whether Hoffman will remain in the rotation following Wednesday's start.

  • Reiss Knehr RP | SD

Padres' Reiss Knehr: Called up, starting Game 2

The Padres recalled Knehr from Triple-A El Paso and designated him as the 27th man for Wednesday's doubleheader in Atlanta. He'll start the second game of the twin bill, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

Knehr will be picking up his second start of the season for the Padres after he was touched up for two runs on three hits and four walks while striking out three in 3.2 innings July 9 against the Rockies. Due to the mounting injuries to the San Diego rotation, Knehr will temporarily step in as the club's fifth starter, but he could be headed back to the minors if Ryan Weathers (ankle) is ready to return from the injured list for this weekend's series in Miami.

  • Bryse Wilson RP | CHC

Braves' Bryse Wilson: Called up ahead of start

Atlanta recalled Wilson from Triple-A Gwinnett and appointed him as the 27th man for Wednesday's doubleheader with the Padres.

Wilson is scheduled to start the second game of the twin bill for Atlanta, but he'll likely need to dazzle during the outing to stick around with the big club beyond Wednesday. The 23-year-old righty is likely just making a spot start for Atlanta, which was forced to temporarily expand its rotation to six men due to the doubleheader. Over his six starts with Atlanta in 2021, Wilson has gone 2-3 with a 5.34 ERA and 1.53 WHIP across 28.2 innings.
