    Mariners' Sauryn Lao: Contract selected

The Mariners selected Lao's contract from Triple-A Tacoma on Tuesday.

Lao was removed from the 40-man roster earlier this season after making one relief appearance, but he's earned his way back on with a 1.37 ERA over his last five outings at Tacoma. The 26-year-old will likely be used in low-leverage spots.

  • Red Sox's Brennan Bernardino: Summoned from minors

The Red Sox recalled Bernardino from Triple-A Worcester on Tuesday.

The Red Sox are swapping left-handed relievers, with Jovani Moran heading back to Worcester and Bernardino rejoining the big club. Bernardino has collected a 3.09 ERA but a less appetizing 36:22 K:BB over 43.2 innings with Boston this season.

  • Victor Mederos RP | LAA

Angels' Victor Mederos: Falls behind early in loss

Mederos (0-1) allowed three runs on nine hits and three walks while striking out three over five innings to take the loss versus the Reds on Monday.

Mederos gave up a two-run home run to Gavin Lux in the first inning, and the Angels were never able to overcome that early damage. Over his first two big-league starts, Mederos has allowed six runs on 12 hits and six walks across nine innings. He'll need to cut down on the baserunners to have a chance to be more effective in a starting role. Should he get another start, he is tentatively projected for a home outing versus the Cubs this weekend.

  • Cade Smith P | CLE

Guardians' Cade Smith: Secures seventh save

Smith allowed one run on a hit and a walk while striking out two over one inning to earn the save in Monday's 3-1 win over the Diamondbacks.

Smith entered Monday on a 10-inning scoreless streak, but he allowed an RBI triple to Geraldo Perdomo in the ninth inning, though he was able to strand the Arizona shortstop 90 feet from home. Smith has performed admirably since taking over the closer role from Emmanuel Clase, who is on non-disciplinary leave. Smith now has seven saves on the year, four of which have come in August. He's added a 2.73 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 76:19 K:BB through 56 innings this season.
