  • Nick Rumbelow RP | SEA

Mariners' Nick Rumbelow: Leaves with cut on thumb

Rumbelow exited Saturday's game against the White Sox with a cut on his right thumb, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports.

The 26-year-old reliever allowed three hits and an earned run in two-thirds of an inning. He is competing for a job in the Mariners bullpen after being dealt from the Yankees in November. The injury seems unlikely to have a major impact on his chances of earning a big-league job.

  • Tommy Layne RP | STL

Red Sox's Tom Layne: Signs minor-league deal with Red Sox

Layne signed a minor-league contract with the Red Sox on Saturday, Brian MacPherson of the Providence Journal reports.

Layne is set to rejoin the Red Sox after spending the past season and a half with the Yankees. Across 19 relief appearances (13 innings) for New York last year, Layne compiled a 7.62 ERA, 1.85 WHIP and 9:8 K:BB. He's just one season removed from posting a respectable 3.63 ERA across 44.2 innings of work, so he could lock down an Opening Day bullpen role with an impressive spring, though he'll more likely spend the year as organizational bullpen depth for Boston.

  • Miguel Castro RP | CHW

Orioles' Miguel Castro: To throw bullpen Tuesday

Castro (knee) is expected to toss a bullpen session Tuesday, Roch Kubatko of MASN Sports reports.

Castro was scratched ahead of his scheduled Grapefruit League start Sunday due to tendinitis in both knees. He received treatment on the knees, as well as his lower back, and stated that he wasn't too concerned about either ailment. If all goes well with Tuesday's bullpen, Castro will likely take the mound in a spring game next week.

  • Buddy Boshers RP | HOU

Astros' Buddy Boshers: Throws scoreless inning Friday

Boshers struck out one in a scoreless third inning in Friday's exhibition opener against Washington.

Boshers is one of the left-handers battling to impress manager A.J. Hinch. Tony Sipp has held the lefty reliever job the past two seasons, but has not been effective in that role. Hence, guys like Boshers and Reymin Guduan are in the mix.

  • Louis Coleman RP | DET

Tigers' Louis Coleman: Agrees to terms with Tigers

Coleman signed a minor-league deal with Detroit on Friday, Chris Cotillo of SB Nation reports.

Coleman spent the entirety of the 2017 season at the Triple-A level split between the Reds and Diamondbacks' organizations. Over 64 innings, he posted a 2.25 ERA and 1.19 WHIP with a 77:32 K:BB. Though he will likely begin the 2018 campaign in Triple-A Toledo, Coleman could find his way into a low-leverage bullpen role with the Tigers by the summer.

  • Robby Scott RP | BOS

Red Sox's Robby Scott: Expected to throw Sunday

Scott (elbow) is expected to take the mound against Baltimore on Sunday, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.

Scott is working his way back to full health after undergoing arthroscopic surgery in mid-October. He was able to begin a throwing program in December but there hasn't been much word on his status heading into spring camp. Scott doesn't seem to have any limitations at this point, and pitching in a live game will clearly be another step forward for the southpaw.

  • Miguel Castro RP | CHW

Orioles' Miguel Castro: Scratched from spring start

Castro will miss his Grapefruit League start Sunday, Brittany Ghiroli of MLB.com reports.

Castro is dealing with both tendinitis in his knees and a sore back. It doesn't sound like he'll be out long, though he's in competition with Gabriel Ynoa and Mike Wright for the Orioles' fifth starter job and his chances could be hurt if he does end up missing several starts this spring.

  • Joe Palumbo RP | TEX

Rangers' Joe Palumbo: Placed on 60-day DL

Palumbo (elbow) was placed on the 60-day disabled list Friday, Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports.

Palumbo continues to work his way back from Tommy John surgery that he underwent in April of 2017. He recently was able to throw from 120 feet and will have a mound session in the near future. The plan all along has been for him to return in early June, so his placement on the 60-day DL doesn't change his recovery timetable.

  • Rays' Brent Honeywell: Torn UCL, Tommy John surgery likely

Honeywell has a torn UCL and plans to have Tommy John surgery, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

He said he will get a second opinion, but assuming nothing changes about the diagnosis, he wants to get Tommy John surgery as soon as possible so that he can get back to game action in early 2019. Honeywell noted that he was throwing harder Thursday than he ever has before, but insisted that was not the cause of the UCL tear. He felt a pop on the first pitch he threw during the bullpen session, and ended up throwing several more pitches before leaving with the trainer. Honeywell should be dropped in all redraft leagues, and removed from big boards in leagues that have not yet drafted. He is still a top 100 prospect for dynasty leagues, as he was essentially big-league ready at the time of the injury. Nathan Eovaldi seems like a good bet to stick in the rotation for the foreseeable future, with Matt Andriese also possibly in line for more starts than he otherwise would have been. Anthony Banda, Jose De Leon and Yonny Chirinos are the Rays' top pitching prospects expected to open the year at Triple-A, and all three are close to major-league ready.

  • Joe Kelly RP | LAD

Red Sox's Joe Kelly: Will pitch Sunday

Kelly is set to pitch Sunday after taking a comebacker off his shin Wednesday, Chad Jennings of the Boston Herald reports.

X-rays after the incident came back negative and Kelly should have a normal spring. He'll be in the late-inning relief mix this season along with Carson Smith, Matt Barnes and Tyler Thornburg.
