Swanson served as the opener in Wednesday's loss to the Athletics and allowed two earned runs on two hits and a walk across two innings. He also recorded two strikeouts and did not factor into the decision.

Just recalled from Triple-A Tacoma on Tuesday, Swanson was able to consume a couple of frames for manager Scott Servais, but he wasn't particularly effective. The right-hander labored through 48 pitches during that modest span, particularly running into trouble in the second when he allowed a two-run home run to Jurickson Profar. Swanson has struggled at both the Triple-A and big-league levels this season, and it remains to be seen how long his current stint with the Mariners will last.

Beeks isn't expected to start any of the Rays' three games over the weekend against the White Sox, Juan Toribio of MLB.com reports.

Beeks returned from Triple-A Durham on Tuesday and filled his usual role as a bulk reliever in an 8-3 loss, limiting the Yankees to one run on two hits and a walk over 3.1 innings while striking out five. Though Beeks likely would have been available to pitch again as soon as Saturday, the Rays are instead expected to recall Brendan McKay from Triple-A Durham and have him, Ryan Yarbrough and Blake Snell all make starts this weekend. Beeks could resurface as a bulk reliever Monday, when Tampa Bay begins a three-game home set with Boston.

Manager Charlie Montoyo said Borucki (elbow) would be activated from the 60-day injured list to start Sunday against the Tigers or Monday against the Indians, Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet.ca reports.

On the IL all season after succumbing to left elbow issues late in spring training, Borucki is finally ready to make his 2019 debut at the major-league level after a successful four-start rehab stint in the minors. Borucki made his final appearance Tuesday for Triple-A Buffalo, covering six innings and giving up three runs on five hits and a walk while striking out six. He would be available to take the hill on normal rest Sunday, but Montoyo may prefer to use Borucki on Monday just to give the lefty an additional day to recover. In that scenario, Jacob Waguespack would remain in line to start Sunday's series finale.

Barnes walked a batter and struck out two over two-thirds of an inning in Wednesday's 5-4 win over the Blue Jays.

Barnes inherited a couple of baserunners with one out in the seventh inning and immediately walked a batter before escaping the bases-loaded threat. He continues to be used primarily as a fireman, entering high-leverage situations in the seventh or eighth inning. He has not been called upon to save a game since blowing a save June 26. Red Sox manager Alex Cora is getting by with Brandon Workman as a temporary closer until Nathan Eovaldi (elbow) is ready to be activated.

Giles entered Wednesday's game in a non-save situation in the eighth inning, allowing one run on two hits and a walk over an inning of relief while striking out one.

The run ended up being costly -- without it, the Jays would have tied the game in the top of the ninth -- but it was at least encouraging to see Giles back on the mound. Assuming he's over the nerve irritation in his elbow that had kept him on the shelf since July 4, the right-hander should resume his closing duties for Toronto, although trade rumors continue to circle him.

Scott was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk following Wednesday's win over the Nationals.

Scott was claimed off waivers by the Orioles in late June and made his way to the majors over the weekend. The 27-year-old allowed five runs over two innings during his brief stint in the majors.

Chavez (3-5) gave up seven runs on five hits and one walk while striking out none through two-thirds of an inning to take the loss against the Diamondbacks on Wednesday.

Chavez allowed seven baserunners and seven runs before being removed without making it through the first inning. The 35-year-old has a 4.72 ERA and an 8.1 K/9 with a 2.6 BB/9 through 39 appearances this season. Chavez will look to get back on track in his next start Monday against the Mariners at T-Mobile Park.

Jimenez allowed four earned runs on four hits while retiring just a single batter in Wednesday's 7-2 loss to the Indians.

Starter Spencer Turnbull kept the Tigers in the game, but Jimenez quickly let things unravel in the eighth inning. The 24-year-old was greeted by a Francisco Lindor solo home run, then allowed three straight hits after retiring his lone batter of the night. At 29-62, Detroit could very well trade incumbent closer Shane Greene soon, but Jimenez hasn't looked ready to inherit the role with his 5.66 ERA this season.

Wittgren gave up one run on one hit and one walk while striking out three through 1.2 innings to record his second save in a 7-2 win over the Tigers on Wednesday.

Wittgren gave up a solo home run in the eighth inning but settled down to deliver a scoreless ninth inning to nail down his second save. Wittgren has been great in July, posting a 2.95 ERA and only allowing a hit in two of his six appearances. Wittgren has a 4-0 record with a 3.19 ERA and a 9.6 K/9 through 33 appearances this season.

Covey is no longer scheduled to start Thursday against the Royals, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

Covey was originally tabbed to start Thursday's series finale, but his struggles in two appearances since the All-Star break -- he's allowed seven runs across just 1.2 innings -- have opened the door for Ross Detwiler to get the ball instead. Covey's role moving forward remains up in the air.
