  • Jose Alvarado RP | PHI

Rays' Jose Alvarado: Shifts to 45-day injured list

Alvarado (shoulder) was transferred to the 45-day injured list Friday, Juan Toribio of MLB.com reports.

The move ends Alvarado's regular season, as his 45 days will expire just after the end of the campaign, though he could still pitch in the playoffs. The lefty joins teammates Yonny Chirinos (elbow), Chaz Roe (elbow), Jalen Beeks (elbow), Andrew Kittredge (elbow) and Chaz Roe (elbow) on the 45-day injured list, though the Rays did get Nick Anderson back from his forearm injury Friday.

  • Austin Pruitt RP | TEX

Astros' Austin Pruitt: Out for season after elbow surgery

Pruitt won't return this season, as he underwent surgery to repair a hairline fracture in his elbow Wednesday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.

Pruitt was expected to compete for a rotation spot this season but never got the chance to do so due to what was originally referred to as elbow inflammation. The issue was evidently more serious than that, and he now won't even pick up a baseball for several months. The timing of the procedure means it's far from a guarantee that he'll be back in time for Opening Day next season.

  • Chris Devenski RP | NYM

Astros' Chris Devenski: Returns from injured list

Devenski (arm) was activated from the injured list Friday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.

Devenski returns after missing more than a month with arm soreness. He allowed three runs in just two innings of work prior to landing on the injured list. Joe Biagini was optioned in a corresponding move.

  • Nick Anderson RP | ATH

Rays' Nick Anderson: Returns from injured list

Anderson (forearm) was activated from the 10-day injured list Friday, Juan Toribio of MLB.com reports.

The 30-year-old threw a successful simulated game Wednesday and is now ready to rejoin the Rays after missing the past two-plus weeks with right forearm inflammation. Anderson has allowed only four hits with a 15:1 K:BB through 9.1 innings this year, and he should reclaim a high-leverage role for manager Kevin Cash, including save chances.

  • Yankees' Jonathan Loaisiga: Lands on injured list

Loaisiga was Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com retroactive to Wednesday for undisclosed reasons.

The Yankees' vague language -- their announcement referred to the issue as "a medical condition that prevents him from playing and necessitates placement on the IL" -- makes this sound like a COVID-19 situation, though Lindsey Adler of The Athletic reports that isn't the case. Loaisiga will be eligible to return from the injured list next Saturday, though the lack of clarity surrounding the issue makes it difficult to predict whether or not he'll be able to do so. Miguel Yajure was recalled to take his place in the bullpen.

  • Zac Lowther RP | BAL

Orioles' Zac Lowther: Joins player pool

Lowther was added to the Orioles' player pool Friday.

Lowther will probably be working out at the Orioles' alternate training site for primarily developmental reasons, though it's not out of the question that he makes his big-league debut at some point down the stretch. He's yet to reach Triple-A, but he recorded a strong 2.55 ERA, backed by a 26.0 percent strikeout rate, in 26 starts for Double-A Bowie last season.

  • Michael King SP | SD

Yankees' Michael King: Starting Game 1

King will start Game 1 of Friday's doubleheader against the Orioles, Erik Boland of Newsday reports.

The 25-year-old also started during a twin bill last weekend and gave up two runs on six hits and one walk over 3.2 innings. King has a 6.23 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 15:6 K:BB through 17.1 innings this season.

  • Tigers' Tyler Alexander: Starting Friday's nightcap

Alexander will start Game 2 of Friday's doubleheader against the Twins, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports.

The 26-year-old moved back to the bullpen in mid-August after a brief stint in the rotation, but he'll return to the mound for a spot start in Friday's doubleheader. Alexander has covered three-plus innings during each of his last three outings and averaged about 60 pitches, so he should be able to provide some decent length for the Tigers, though he may have trouble qualifying for a potential victory.

  • Deivi Garcia RP | MIL

Yankees' Deivi Garcia: Called up as 29th man

Garcia was called up as the 29th man for Friday's doubleheader against the Orioles.

According to Erik Boland of Newsday, Garcia will start Friday's nightcap for the Yankees. He'll be looking to build upon his strong big-league debut Sunday against the Mets, in which he allowed just a single unearned run on four hits across six innings, striking out six and walking none.

  • Yankees' Aroldis Chapman: Blows save chance

Chapman allowed one run on two hits and one walk while striking out two across one inning to blow the save Thursday against the Mets.

Chapman entered the game in the ninth inning, tasked with holding a one-run lead. However, he allowed a solo home run to J.D. Davis to knot the game at 7-7. Chapman has now been charged with a run in three of his five appearances this season. He is currently appealing a three-game suspension for throwing above a batter's head earlier this week.
