Smith (0-2) took the loss on Wednesday night against the Diamondbacks. He allowed three runs (two earned) on two hits while striking out one over two-thirds of an inning.

Smith entered for the 10th inning with the score tied 2-2 and retired two of the four batters he faces before being pulled in favor of righty Bryan Abreu. The left-hander is 0-2 in 11 September appearances, allowing four earned runs with 10 strikeouts and two walks over that stretch.

Winder did not factor into the decision Wednesday, allowing three runs on six hits over 4.2 innings against the White Sox. He struck out six.

Winder fell victim to small ball as he allowed two RBI singles and a sacrifice fly. In four starts since being recalled from Triple-A St. Paul on Sept. 11, the 25-year-old rookie has posted an unspectacular 5.59 ERA and 1.29 WHIP over 19.1 innings, with five home runs allowed during that span.

Sewald picked up a save against the Rangers on Wednesday with a perfect ninth inning.

Sewald enjoyed one of his easiest and quickest saves this season, retiring all three batters he faced on just five combined pitches. The right-hander reached the 20-save mark for the first time in his career with his first save since Sept. 10. Sewald's strikeout rate has dropped a bit in 2022 compared to last season, but he's posting career-best marks with a 2.45 ERA and 0.74 WHIP.

White did not factor into the decision Wednesday, allowing three runs on five hits and three walks with one strikeout over 3.2 innings against the Yankees.

The Yankees got to White early with a three-run outburst in the first inning, and the 27-year-old never really settled in. He needed 69 pitches to get through 3.2 innings before he was pulled from the game. Over his last six starts dating back to Aug. 26, he has surrendered 27 earned runs over 25.2 innings with a 17:11 K:BB. He owns a 5.21 ERA and 1.44 WHIP through 95 innings split between the Dodgers and the Blue Jays on the season.

Soto pitched a clean ninth inning to earn the save in Wednesday's 2-1 win over the Royals. He struck out one.

Soto cruised through the Royals on just 10 pitches to earn his 29th save of the season. After taking a loss back on Sept. 17, the lefty has rattled off four straight scoreless appearances, picking up a save in each of those games. Soto has established himself as a fairly reliable closer this year, and he should head into 2023 with the role locked up in Detroit.

Norris (1-4) tossed two scoreless innings of relief to earn the win Wednesday against the Royals. He allowed one hit and struck out one.

Matt Manning was scratched right before his scheduled start due to arm fatigue and tendinitis, so the Tigers made it a bullpen game. That allowed Norris to swoop in for his first win of the season and just his third since the beginning of last year. The lefty now has a 5.53 ERA, and he's not much of a fantasy factor in his current relief role.

Barnes picked up the save Wednesday in a scoreless ninth inning against the Orioles. He allowed one hit and one walk with one strikeout.

Barnes allowed a leadoff single which was quickly erased by a double play, but he proceeded to walk the next batter before striking out Adley Rutschman to end the game. The save was his sixth of the season and first since Sept. 11. He now has a streak of 10 straight appearances without allowing a run dating back to Aug. 31, dropping his ERA from 6.04 to 4.54 in the process.

Manager Terry Francona said Wednesday that Morris will move into a relief role, Chris Assenheimer of the Elyria Chronicle-Telegram reports.

With Zach Plesac (hand) due to return from the 15-day injured list Friday, Morris will lose his spot in the Cleveland rotation. Over his first five big-league starts, Morris turned in a 2.18 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and 20:11 K:BB across 20.2 innings.

Vest will start Wednesday's game against the Royals, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports.

Matt Manning was scheduled to start and went through his pregame routine Wednesday as usual, but Vest will instead take the mound first for Detroit. Vest hasn't thrown more than two frames in any appearance this year, so he should give way to the bullpen after an inning or two.

The Orioles recalled Akin from Triple-A Norfolk on Wednesday.

Akin and Beau Sulser were summoned from Norfolk to provide the Orioles with a pair of fresh relief arms after the bullpen covered 12.2 innings the past two days in the first two contests of a four-game set in Boston. Before being demoted to Triple-A on Monday, Akin had logged a 3.40 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 71:20 K:BB in 76.2 innings for Baltimore on the season.
