Twins' Byron Buxton: Dealing with illness at Triple-A

Buxton is out of the lineup for Triple-A Rochester on Saturday due to flu-like symptoms, Mike Berardino of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.

He pinch ran on Friday, but has been out of the lineup since Tuesday due to the illness. There is really not much Buxton can do at Triple-A to change people's opinions of him, as he has always dominated at that level (.986 OPS in 2015, .943 OPS in 2016) but his success has yet to translate to the big leagues. He should join the Twins when rosters expand in September. It is worth remembering that he won't turn 23 until December, which makes him two years younger than the likes of Aaron Judge and Josh Bell, both of whom Buxton already has more big league experience than.

Twins' Kennys Vargas: Optioned to Triple-A

Vargas was officially optioned to Triple-A Rochester on Saturday, the Star Tribune's LaVelle Neal reports.

Despite hitting three homers in his last 33 plate appearances, Vargas was hitting just .148 over that span and had been left out of the lineup more often than not. He makes way for pitching prospect Adalberto Mejia, but Vargas could be back with the team when rosters expand in September.

Twins' Kennys Vargas: Set to be optioned

Vargas is expected to be optioned to Triple-A Rochester on Saturday, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.

While the team hasn't yet made an official announcement, Vargas' name is not included on Saturday's lineup card and Triple-A left-hander Adalberto Mejia has joined the team in Kansas City. Vargas has appeared in 25 games for the Twins on the season, putting up a .259/.379/.576 slash line across 85 at-bats.

  • Ryan Goins DH | KC

Blue Jays' Ryan Goins: Recalled from Triple-A

Goins was recalled from Triple-A Buffalo on Friday, Blue Jays broadcaster Mike Wilner reports.

Goins has struggled to the tune of a .172/.211/.301 line with the big club this year but can play virtually any position on the diamond, and that versatility will help with Josh Donaldson banged up and Jose Bautista and Kevin Pillar on the DL. The 28-year-old Goins replaces Darrell Ceciliani on the active roster.

  • AJ Reed DH | HOU

Astros' A.J. Reed: Drives in three against Orioles

Reed went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI on Thursday against Baltimore.

It's been a tough go of it for Reed to start his Astros' career. The 23-year-old is batting under .200 in his first 94 plate appearances, and the power he was lauded for in the minors has yet to transfer to the major leagues. Reed will need to start putting more balls in the seats and cut down on his strikeout rate (35.1 percent) in order to be considered in most fantasy formats.

  • Miguel Cabrera DH | DET

Tigers' Miguel Cabrera: Picks up 1,000th RBI as member of Tigers

Cabrera went 2-for-3 with an RBI in Thursday's 4-3 victory over the Red Sox.

Cabrera's 78th RBI of the season was also his 1,000th as a Tiger, making him the 11th player in franchise history to reach that mark. The 33-year-old has been absolutely destroying the ball lately, going 41-for-114 (.360) with nine home runs, 26 RBI and 17 runs scored since the All-Star break. Cabrera is on pace to drive in 100-plus runs for the 12th time in his illustrious 14-year career.

  • Brad Miller DH | SD

Rays' Brad Miller: Slugs another homer in victory over Padres

Miller went 3-for-4 with a two-run blast to lift Tampa Bay to a 2-0 victory over the Padres on Wednesday.

That's now three homers in the last two days and five since Saturday. Prior to this season, Miller never had more than 11 home runs and now with still about a month and a half to go, he has 25 homers. He is hitting .265 with a .850 OPS -- the result of a healthy .530 slugging percentage. Miller also has 57 RBI, 58 runs and six steals in 400 at-bats.

  • Miguel Cabrera DH | DET

Tigers' Miguel Cabrera: Returns to lineup

Cabrera (bicep) is in the lineup Wednesday against the Royals.

Cabrera will start at first and bat third just two days after going down with a strained bicep. Yordano Ventura will take the mound for Kansas City during Wednesday's series finale.

  • Mariners' Dan Vogelbach: Off to slow start at Tacoma

Vogelbach, 23, is hitting just .195/.381/.310 with two home runs in 87 at-bats with Triple-A Tacoma.

He had a .972 OPS at Triple-A prior to getting traded to the Mariners and has a .691 OPS since, although his excellent approach has still been on display. A .231 BABIP since the trade is primarily to blame for the low average, and the power will come eventually. The slow start in his new organization has essentially ruled out a promotion to the big leagues prior to September, however.

  • Ji-Man Choi 1B | NYM

Angels' Ji-Man Choi: Out of lineup Tuesday

Choi is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Mariners.

The 25-year-old Choi has logged all of two at-bats against lefties this season so his absence against Ariel Miranda is hardly surprising. Choi isn't getting it done against right-handed pitching, batting .165/.261/.361, and it would make sense if Nick Buss (also a lefty batter) ate into Choi's at-bats against righties moving forward.
