  • Red Sox's Masataka Yoshida: Begins rehab assignment

Yoshida (shoulder) went 0-for-2 with a walk for Triple-A Worcester on Wednesday.

Yoshida kicked off a rehab assignment with the WooSox, serving as the DH and playing all seven innings in the first game of a doubleheader. Given his lengthy stint on the injured list, Yoshida may be given the maximum time allowed (20 days) before before being activated. It's unclear if there will be a regular role for Yoshida when he returns, particularly as Boston looks to get at-bats for top prospect Roman Anthony.

  • Jorge Soler DH | LAA

Angels' Jorge Soler: Smacks solo homer

Soler went 1-for-4 with a solo homer in Wednesday's 8-3 loss to Atlanta.

Soler was able to eat into the Angels' steep deficit in the ninth inning as he smacked a solo homer off Dylan Dodd to left-center field. It was Soler's ninth home run of the season, and he has gone 2-for-6 in his two games since returning from the 10-day injured list Tuesday.

  • David Fry C | CLE

Guardians' David Fry: Launches second homer in loss

Fry went 2-for-3 with a solo home run in Wednesday's 5-4 loss to the Cubs.

Fry cranked his second homer of the season and logged only his second multi-hit game through his first 21 outings. The righty-hitting 29-year-old has served strictly as a designated hitter after missing the start of the season due to offseason elbow surgery, and he's mostly struggled in a weak-side platoon role. Fry is slashing .163/.226/.306 with the aforementioned two long balls, one double, four RBI and one stolen base over 53 plate appearances.

  • Yandy Diaz 1B | TB

Rays' Yandy Diaz: Hot streak continues Wednesday

Diaz went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run in Wednesday's 6-5 win over the Athletics.

Diaz played a big role in the Rays' five-run sixth inning, when he took Mitch Spence deep to left-center field for a two-run homer. Diaz has been hot at the plate over the last month and has reached base safely in 26 consecutive games dating back to June 3. Over that span, he has slashed a ridiculous .404/.483/.641 with 17 runs scored, four doubles, six home runs and 15 RBI across 118 plate appearances.

  • Kyle Manzardo 1B | CLE

Guardians' Kyle Manzardo: Sitting in third straight vs. LHP

Manzardo is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Cubs.

The Guardians are facing a lefty (Shota Imanaga) for the third game in a row, and the left-handed-hitting Manzardo has been excluded from the lineup for all of those contests. David Fry will get another start at designated hitter Wednesday at Manzardo's expense.

  • Yordan Alvarez DH | HOU

Astros' Yordan Alvarez: Moved to 60-day IL

The Astros transferred Alvarez (hand) from the 10-day injured list to the 60-day IL Wednesday, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports.

Alvarez hasn't played for the Astros since May 3 and doesn't look on track to return until after the All-Star break after suffering a setback with his fractured right hand while swinging the bat earlier this week, so his move to the 60-day is merely procedural. The transaction frees up a spot on the 40-man roster for infielder Zack Short, whose contract was selected from Triple-A Sugar Land. Alvarez is scheduled to visit a hand specialist within the next few days, after which the Astros may have an update regarding when he might be ready to resume his hitting progression.

  • Red Sox's Masataka Yoshida: Getting test run at first base

The Red Sox plan to give Yoshida (shoulder) some "light work" at first base during his rehab assignment, Sean McAdam and Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com report.

Yoshida was seen working out at the position Wednesday prior to the first game of Worcester's doubleheader. While the Red Sox haven't ruled out Yoshida playing the position in games, it's seen as unlikely at this juncture, as he will focus on designated hitter and the outfield. Yoshida is serving as the DH and batting second in the first game of Worcester's twin bill in what will be his first game action since spring training. He could be transferred to Double-A Portland this weekend while Worcester begins a road trip. The Red Sox haven't put a timeline on Yoshida's activation from the 60-day injured list, but his rehab assignment could be a lengthy one given the 31-year-old's long layoff.

  • Jahmai Jones 2B | DET

Tigers' Jahmai Jones: Could see more time as DH

With Kerry Carpenter (hamstring) landing on the 10-day injured list Wednesday, Jones is an option to see more time as Detroit's designated hitter, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports.

Carpenter was seeing the bulk of his playing time in right field and as the team's DH. Wenceel Perez is likely to be the top option in right while Carpenter is out, with Matt Vierling mixing in as well, but the Tigers could use a handful of players at DH. Jones is on that list, at least when a lefty is on the mound. In a small sample this season, the 27-year-old has a 1.256 OPS against southpaws compared to a .533 OPS versus righties.

  • Yordan Alvarez DH | HOU

    Astros' Yordan Alvarez: Suffers setback

Alvarez was shut down from all activities after reporting renewed soreness in his hand while taking swings Monday, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.

Alvarez's fractured right hand has kept him on the injured list since early May. He seemed to be closing in on a return -- potentially as soon as this weekend -- but his setback throws a wrench in the Astros' plans. The 28-year-old slugger is due to visit a specialist within the next couple of days, at which point the team will know more regarding his status and how far away he may be from activation.

  • Jorge Soler DH | LAA

Angels' Jorge Soler: Activated from 10-day IL

The Angels activated Soler (back) from the 10-day injured list Tuesday.

Soler has been cleared to return to action following a minimum 10-day absence with a back injury. With Mike Trout still limited to designated-hitter duty, Soler will resume his role as the Angels' primary right fielder.
