  • James McCann C | ARI

White Sox's James McCann: Takes seat Friday

McCann is out of the lineup for Friday's game at Toronto.

McCann returns to the bench after starting three of the last four games and going 3-for-9 with a home run, two RBI and a walk. Welington Castillo will start behind the plate and bat fifth Friday in his absence.

  • Rays' Anthony Bemboom: Called up for first time

Bemboom was called up by the Rays on Friday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

The 29-year-old has yet to make his big-league debut. He's been a career .235/.309/.349 hitter over eight minor-league seasons. With Mike Zunino (quad) and Michael Perez (oblique) both on the injured list, Bemboom is expected to back up Nick Ciuffo.

  • Dodgers' Austin Barnes: Gets day off

Barnes is not in the lineup Thursday against the Nationals, David Vassegh of AM 570 LA Sports reports.

Barnes will give way to Russell Martin behind the dish Thursday after starting the past three games, going 2-for-10 with a walk and a double in those contests.

  • Yan Gomes C | CHC

Nationals' Yan Gomes: Rough day in return

Gomes (forearm) went 0-for-4 with four strikeouts Wednesday in the Nationals' 7-3 loss to the Brewers.

Gomes rejoined the lineup after a one-day respite due to the left forearm bruise he sustained after being hit by a pitch in Monday's series opener. The backstop struggled to get his timing right at the plate during his four at-bats, swinging and missing on nine of the 20 pitches he saw on the day. He could get a breather Thursday as the Nationals begin a four-game set in Los Angeles against the Dodgers.

  • Omar Narvaez C | HOU

Mariners' Omar Narvaez: Out of lineup Thursday

Narvaez is not in the lineup Thursday against the Yankees, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports.

Narvaez will give way to Tom Murphy behind the dish with left-hander J.A. Happ starting for the Yankees. Over his last 10 games, Narvaez is hitting .269/.406/.308 with a pair of RBI and a 5:6 BB:K.

  • Zack Collins C | CLE

White Sox's Zack Collins: Sidelined with concussion

Collins (concussion) was placed on the minor-league injured list Thursday, James Fegan of The Athletic reports.

Collins is reportedly in concussion protocol after taking a foul tip off his mask earlier in the week. Prior to landing on the shelf, the 24-year-old was slashing .256/.370/.581 with seven homers in 24 games for Triple-A Charlotte.

  • Cubs' Willson Contreras: Resting Thursday

Contreras is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Marlins.

Contreras will receive some routine maintenance for the matinee game before presumably rejoining the lineup for Friday's series opener against the Brewers. Backup Taylor Davis checks in behind the plate for Contreras, who is off to an 8-for-20 start in May.

  • Reds' Tucker Barnhart: Sitting Wednesday

Barnhart is not in the lineup Wednesday against the A's.

Barnhart will sit for Wednesday's night contest with an afternoon game on tap Thursday. In his place, Curt Casali is starting behind the dish and hitting seventh.

  • Danny Jansen C | TEX

Blue Jays' Danny Jansen: Remains out Wednesday

Jansen is not in the lineup Wednesday against the Twins.

Jansen will stick on the bench for a second consecutive game as Luke Maile picks up another start behind the dish in his stead. There has been no word regarding any injury, so it seems like the Blue Jays are simply giving the young backstop an extended breather -- the team is off the schedule Thursday -- in the midst of a 5-for-26 slump (.192) over his last 10 appearances.

  • Red Sox's Christian Vazquez: Gets day off

Vazquez is not in the lineup Wednesday against the Orioles, Roch Kubatko of MASN Sports reports.

Vazquez will retreat to the bench for Wednesday's series finale after starting the previous two games behind the dish, going 4-for-7 with a double and two runs scored during those contests. Sandy Leon is starting and catcher and hitting ninth in this one.
