Red Sox's Sandy Leon: Receiving first 2016 major league start

Leon is getting the start behind the plate against Minnesota on Saturday, batting ninth, Evan Drellich of the Boston Herald reports.

Leon was promoted to the big leagues last week with Ryan Hanigan (neck) and Blake Swihart (ankle) landing on the DL and is now receiving his first major league start of the 2016 season. He'll replace fellow Red Sox catcher, Christian Vazquez, who is receiving a rest day after seven straight games of action.

Indians' Yan Gomes: Remains out of lineup Thursday

Gomes (groin) remains out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Mariners.

Chris Gimenez will get another start behind the plate Thursday as Gomes continues to recover from a painful groin injury. I don't know if we'll put him in tonight or not, we'll see how he feels. He's pretty sore. Hopefully by tomorrow," manager Terry Francona said.

Gomes (groin) is not in the lineup Wednesday, Bob Dutton of the Tacoma News Tribune reports.

Gomes was removed from Tuesday's contest after taking a foul ball to the groin and was later diagnosed with a testicular contusion. It remains unclear how long he'll be sidelined for, but Chris Gimenez -- who's getting the start behind the plate Wednesday -- figures to fill in as the catcher for however long Gomes is out.

  • Gary Sanchez C | MIL

Yankees' Gary Sanchez: Seeing time at first base

Sanchez (thumb) has been taking grounders at first base, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.

Sanchez has been nursing a right thumb injury, but it appears the Yankees are at least willing to explore their options with regular first baseman Mark Teixeira on the disabled list. The catcher is still on the minor league DL, but it sounds like he may be nearing a return, though it remains to be seen whether he'll be called up or stay at Triple-A when healthy.

Gomes left Tuesday's game after getting hit in the groin by a foul ball, the Cleveland Plain Dealer's Paul Hoynes reports.

He was replaced by Chris Gimenez, and it is unclear how serious the injury is. Gomes has hit for a little power this year, but his .176 batting average has negated any positives in most roto formats. His status should be updated prior to Wednesday's game against the Mariners.
