  • Marcelo Mayer SS | BOS

Red Sox's Marcelo Mayer: Should be healthy for spring

Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow said Monday that Mayer's recovery from right wrist surgery had progressed to the point that he could have been available had the team made a deep postseason run, Rob Bradford of WEEI.com reports.

That suggests Mayer -- who underwent a right wrist arthroscopy in August -- should be fully recovered well ahead of spring training. As things currently stand, Mayer could open the 2026 season as the starter at either second or third base, though much will depend on what additions the Red Sox make to their roster.

  • Nick Madrigal 3B | NYM

    Nick Madrigal: Elects free agency

Madrigal (shoulder) cleared waivers and opted for free agency Thursday.

Madrigal missed the full 2025 campaign after undergoing surgery in February to repair a fractured left shoulder. The infielder, who'll turn 29 in March, will now hit the open market. He spent the previous three years with the Cubs before signing with the Mets ahead of the 2025 season.

  • Jose Miranda 3B | MIN

    Jose Miranda: Enters free agency

Miranda cleared waivers Thursday and elected free agency, Aaron Gleeman of The Athletic reports.

After posting a .763 OPS in the big leagues in 2024, Miranda's performance declined considerably in 2025, as he slashed just .195/.272/.296 across 371 plate appearances at Triple-A St. Paul. His previous success could net him a fair amount of attention in free agency, though his options will likely be limited to minor-league contracts.

  • Trey Lipscomb 3B | WAS

Nationals' Trey Lipscomb: Sent outright to Triple-A

The Nationals outrighted Lipscomb to Triple-A Rochester on Thursday.

Lipscomb has lost his spot on the 40-man roster but will remain in the organization. The 25-year-old infielder has slashed just .206/.272/.237 during his time with the Nationals over the last two seasons.

  • Max Muncy 3B | LAD

Dodgers' Max Muncy: Club option exercised

The Dodgers picked up Muncy's $10 million club option for 2026 on Thursday, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports.

Keeping Muncy in town was likely an easy decision, as the 35-year-old slashed .243/.376/.470 with 19 homers, 67 RBI and 48 runs scored over 388 regular-season plate appearances. He added three more long balls and scored eight runs during the Dodgers' postseason run, which ended in the team winning its second World Series title in as many years. Muncy is likely to remain Los Angeles' primary third baseman while the club goes for the three-peat in 2026.

  • Alex Bregman 3B | BOS

Alex Bregman: Becomes free agent after opting out

Bregman became a free agent after opting out of his contract Monday, Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe reports.

Bregman's decision to pass on his $40 million player options for the 2026 and 2027 seasons had been considered a foregone conclusion. He is not going to net that amount on an annual basis on the free-agent market, but the 31-year-old has eyes on a lucrative long-term contract. Bregman slashed .273/.360/.462 with 18 homers over 114 regular-season games in 2025 with Boston. The Red Sox are likely to be aggressive in their efforts to re-sign the third baseman, but Bregman will have many suitors.

  • Santiago Espinal: Becomes free agent

Espinal elected free agency Saturday, Charlie Goldsmith of Fox 19 Now Cincinnati reports.

After clearing waivers Friday, Espinal will now officially begin the offseason in search of his next opportunity. The 30-year-old infielder is coming off the worst offensive season of his career, having finished the regular season with just a .574 OPS across 328 plate appearances.

  • Reds' Santiago Espinal: Outrighted off 40-man roster

The Reds outrighted Espinal to Triple-A Louisville on Friday, Charlie Goldsmith of Fox 19 Now Cincinnati reports.

Espinal has the ability to decline the outright assignment and elect free agency, but it's uncertain whether he plans to exercise that right. The veteran infielder slashed only .243/.292/.282 with zero home runs over 114 regular-season games for the Reds this season.

  • Jordan Lawlar SS | ARI

Diamondbacks' Jordan Lawlar: Plays center field in winter ball

Lawlar played center field Tuesday in his first game with Tigres del Licey in the Dominican Winter League.

Lawlar has never played the outfield as a pro, but he's being introduced to center field in winter ball as the Diamondbacks evaluate how the 23-year-old fits into their roster picture for 2026. The former top prospect is a shortstop by trade, but that position is being held down by Geraldo Perdomo with the big club. Lawlar played some third base last season for the Diamondbacks, but manager Torey Lovullo shied away from him down the stretch during their playoff push due to defense, instead preferring Blaze Alexander there. The hot corner is still an option for Lawlar, but a successful transition to outfield would solve a problem for the Diamondbacks, who will be without Lourdes Gurriel (knee) for most of the season. Lawlar's offensive potential is considered better than that of either Alek Thomas or Jake McCarthy.

  • Max Muncy 3B | LAD

Dodgers' Max Muncy: Goes deep in Game 2 victory

Muncy went 1-for-3 with a solo home run and a walk Saturday in a 5-1 win over the Blue Jays in Game 2 of the World Series.

Muncy delivered a big insurance run in the seventh frame with a solo blast to left field two batters after teammate Will Smith broke a 1-1 tie with a solo shot of his own. The homer was Muncy's second hit of the World Series after he went 1-for-4 with a single in Game 1. The third baseman figures to be an every-game presence in the lineup during the series since Toronto is unlikely to deploy any left-handed starters.
